Why Elites Think ‘Pro-America’ Is So Last Century

” Ibn Warraq, renowned scholar of Islam, recently spoke at Yale about U.S. foreign policy:

“ We are engaged in a war of ideas, with our principal enemy: an ideology….  Islamic terrorism is not caused by poverty, lack of education, sexual deprivation…or lack of economic opportunity…. There are two kinds of Jihad: terrorism, and slow penetration of Western institutions subverting Western laws and customs from within. Ignorance, naivety, arrogance, political correctness, sheer laziness, sentimentality…have led to Islamic successes in penetrating the universities, from the Voice of America, the Pentagon…PBS, to the universities and colleges where Islamic propaganda is shamelessly and openly disseminated.”

He likens the battle against Islamic radicals to the Cold War. But, he is mistaken in one sense. It was a proud and patriotic America that confronted the USSR. In the decades following World War II, most people in the United States were happy to celebrate our contributions to the defeat of Nazism and the liberation and restoration of Europe. Americans believed in themselves and their country.

Today, we have a president, and a younger generation, that views the U.S. through a different prism – one clouded by Vietnam, racial discord, and now the war with Iraq. It is “cool” to distrust and disdain the U.S., and the media feeds the skepticism. In covering the U.S. engagement in Afghanistan, for instance, news organizations have seldom reported on the military’s successes in building schools and providing basic services in that country; they prefer to zero in on instances of civilian casualties and misdeeds by our soldiers. The coverage leads us to doubt our military, and our morals.”

New York, Northeast Lead Nation In ‘Outmigration

” New York State and the Northeast region led the nation in domestic net “outmigration” in the period from July 1, 2013 to July 1, 2014 , according to newly released data from the Census Bureau. During the same period, Texas and the South led the nation in domestic net “immigration.”

Domestic net outmigration is the number of residents who move out of a state or region to another part of the country minus the number of residents who move in from another part of the country. It does not include international migration—n.b. people who move into a state or region from outside the United States, or from a state or region to outside the United States.”

This video dates from 2011 and demonstrates that the flight from NY has been ongoing for decades , which gives you an idea of how long the state has been so poorly managed …

” A state or region has domestic net immigration when the number of people moving in from another part of the country exceeds the number moving out.

From July 1, 2013 to July 1, 2014, 30 states had a domestic net outmigration and 20 states plus the District of Columbia had a domestic net immigration.”

Here are the top ten states that people are fleeing:

” 1-New York (-153,921)

2-Illinois (-94,956)

3-New Jersey (-55,469)

4-California (-32,090)

5-Pennsylvania (-31,448)

6-Michigan (-28,679)

7-Connecticut (-26,216)

8-Virginia (-20,400)

9-Ohio (-18,243)

10-Massachusetts (-16,354) “

Students Forced To Expose Underwear For Inspection

” In Gustine, population 457, what happens at the schoolhouse affects nearly everyone. And something happened Monday that is causing a big controversy in this small town.

“I felt uncomfortable, and I didn’t want to do it,” said 11-year-old Eliza Medina. “I felt like they violated my privacy.”

She was one of about two dozen elementary students who were rounded up in the small town 90 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Eliza’s mother, Maria Medina, said boys were taken to one room, girls to another, and they were ordered “to pull down their pants to check them to see if they could find anything.” “

” In 2014, 3,291 pages of new laws were passed by Congress – the branch of government with the constitutional authority to make law – and signed by the president. During this same period, unelected bureaucrats at dozens of federal departments and agencies issued 79,066 pages of new and updated regulations.

These rules – many that are are inefficient, ineffective, and excessive – continue to limit the ability of small businesses and workers to succeed, rig the system to benefit connected insiders, and hurt hardworking American families through higher costs and limited options in the marketplace. Yet, despite the very real negative effects on our economy, the American people are unable to hold the unelected bureaucrats who make these rules accountable.

Congress cedes far too much lawmaking authority to the executive branch. I look forward to turning this trend around in the 114th Congress to ensure that the ones making the laws are the ones who can be held accountable by the American people.

Muslim Brotherhood-Aligned Leaders Hosted At State Department

” The State Department hosted a delegation of Muslim Brotherhood-aligned leaders this week for a meeting about their ongoing efforts to oppose the current government of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt, who rose to power following the overthrow of Mohamed Morsi, an ally of the Brotherhood, in 2013.

One member of the delegation, a Brotherhood-aligned judge in Egypt, posed for a picture while at Foggy Bottom in which he held up the Islamic group’s notorious four-finger Rabia symbol, according to his Facebook page.”

U.S. Spies On Millions Of Cars

” The Justice Department has been building a national database to track in real time the movement of vehicles around the U.S., a secret domestic intelligence-gathering program that scans and stores hundreds of millions of records about motorists, according to current and former officials and government documents.

The primary goal of the license-plate tracking program, run by the Drug Enforcement Administration, is to seize cars, cash and other assets to combat drug trafficking, according to one government document. But the database’s use has expanded to hunt for vehicles associated with numerous other potential crimes, from kidnappings to killings to rape suspects, say people familiar with the matter.

Officials have publicly said that they track vehicles near the border with Mexico to help fight drug cartels. What hasn’t been previously disclosed is that the DEA has spent years working to expand the database “throughout the United States,’’ according to one email reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Many state and local law-enforcement agencies are accessing the database for a variety of investigations, according to people familiar with the program, putting a wealth of information in the hands of local officials who can track vehicles in real time on major roadways.

The database raises new questions about privacy and the scope of government surveillance. The existence of the program and its expansion were described in interviews with current and former government officials, and in documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union through a Freedom of Information Act request and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. It is unclear if any court oversees or approves the intelligence-gathering.”

Google Surrendered Private Data Of WikiLeaks Journalists To US Government

Google handed over confidential data of WikiLeaks’ staff to the U.S. government, prompting the whistleblower organization to send a letter to both the search engine giant and the U.S. Department of Justice seeking an explanation.

WikiLeaks announced on its website on Monday that its investigations editor Sarah Harrison, section editor Joseph Farrell, and senior journalist and spokesperson Kristinn Hrafnsson have received a notice that Google had handed over all their emails and metadata to the U.S. government, which has issued warrants alleging “conspiracy” and “espionage” against the journalists. The charges carry a prison sentence of up to 45 years.

“ The US government is claiming universal jurisdiction to apply the Espionage Act, general Conspiracy statute and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act to journalists and publishers – a horrifying precedent for press freedoms around the world,” WikiLeaks said on its website.”

49 Philippine Police Killed After Clash With Rebels

” Forty-nine Philippine police commandos were killed when they clashed with Muslim rebels in the south, police said Monday, a bloodbath which tested a peace accord signed last March.

An 11-hour gunbattle broke out after police entered the remote town of Mamasapano, held by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), around 3:00 am Sunday (1900 GMT Saturday) without coordinating with the rebels as required under their ceasefire agreement.

The bodies of 49 police have been recovered from the town on Mindanao island and moved to an army camp, regional police spokeswoman Judith Ambong told AFP. “

Illinois Says Rule-Breaking Students Must Give Teachers Their Facebook Passwords

” School districts in Illinois are telling parents that a new law may require school officials to demand the social media passwords of students if they are suspected in cyberbullying cases or are otherwise suspected of breaking school rules.

The law, which went into effect on January 1, defines cyberbullying and makes harassment on Facebook, Twitter, or via other digital means a violation of the state’s school code, even if the bullying happens outside of school hours.

A letter sent out to parents in the Triad Community Unit School District #2, a district located just over the Missouri-Illinois line near St. Louis, that was obtained by Motherboard says that school officials can demand students give them their passwords. The full letter is embedded below.

” If your child has an account on a social networking website, e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, ask.fm, etc., please be aware that State law requires school authorities to notify you that your child may be asked to provide his or her password for these accounts to school officials in certain circumstances,” the letter says.”

UK Decision To Lower Flags After Death Of Saudi King Stirs Debate

” The government’s decision on Friday to lower British flags following the death of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has stirred controversy, with critics pointing to the kingdom’s poor human rights record.

Tributes from world leaders have poured in for the late monarch, seen by some as a cautious moderniser in a turbulent region, but criticised by others as not having done enough to reform an absolute monarchy adhering to a severe form of Islam.

Saudi law, which forbids women from driving and punishes apostasy with death, is derived from Wahhabi Islam, an ultraconservative sect whose clergy have provided Saudi rulers with religious legitimacy.

” Your flag flying insults every woman in the United Kingdom, HOW DARE YOU,” tweeted former Conservative lawmaker Louise Mensch.

Lawyer and journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeted: “UK orders flags flown at half-mast for King Abdullah. Will return to lecturing the world about democracy tomorrow.” “

Cop Records Himself Shooting Man For Running Away

” The Muskogee, Oklahoma Police Department just released the video from a fatal on-duty police shooting Friday. The whole thing was captured by an officer’s body camera, and what it shows is horrifying.

Officer Chansey McMillin can be seen shooting and killing 21-year-old Terence D. Walker back on January 17th. The only observable reason why he as shot was for running from police who confronted him.

The video documents what otherwise might have been in dispute, that Officer McMillin fired five shots at Walker when the suspect stopped to pick up an item he dropped while running away.”

While the object that Walker dropped may or may not have been a gun , what we saw in the video was a fleeing suspect stop , bend down to retrieve something , and then continue running away . We did not see the suspect turn towards the officer or make any threatening moves .

Journalism School Dean: The First Amendment Ends At Insulting Mohammed

” Unusual, not because it’s rare to see an American journalist bowing to Islamic sensibilities on depictions of Mohammed but because typically they don’t go so far as to demand legal limits on their own profession. When the New York Times refuses to run a cartoon goofing on Islam, they don’t want the reason to be government censorship. They prefer to be censored by more sympathetic agents, like violent Muslim radicals.

To be precise here, though, DeWayne Hickham, the dean of Morgan State’s J-school, isn’t demanding a “Mohammed exception” to the First Amendment. He’s demanding an exception for all speech that would make the audience so angry that they might react violently — exactly the sort of slippery slope on censorship that people like you and me worry about when images of Mohammed are suppressed. Actual line from this op-ed, regarding the new cover of Charlie Hebdo: “The once little-known French satirical news weekly crossed the line that separates free speech from toxic talk.”

The most current issue of Charlie Hebdo again has Mohammed on its cover. This time, he appears crying under a headline that reads: “All is forgiven.” Well, apparently not. Ten people have been killed during protests in Niger, a former French colony. Other anti-French riots have erupted from North Africa to Asia. In reaction to all of this, Pope Francis has said of the magazine, “You cannot make fun of the faith of others.”… “

Man Tackles, Chokes Armed Walmart Shopper

” Investigators released video Wednesday of one Walmart shopper tackling another after he saw the man carrying a gun. But it turned out the man who was tackled had a concealed-weapons permit.

Video released by the sheriff’s office shows Clarence Daniels walking into the entryway, with other shoppers and small children nearby. Then you see Michael Foster come up behind him, grab his neck and take him to the ground.

As the two fall, there are three small children right around them, and they fall into one of them.

Investigators believe it all started when Foster said he saw Daniels in the parking lot, holstering his gun.  He followed Daniels in and tackled him — without calling 911 or alerting store security, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office said.

Store security eventually showed up and detained both men until law enforcement arrived.

When deputies confirmed that Daniels had a permit for the gun, they arrested Foster.

One witness saw it all, and was outraged.”

” “ He doesn’t even know who the victim is,” said Manton Sameuls. “But he just goes and attacks the man and throws him to the ground, necklock him, for what? Why? What did the man do?”

Foster is now charged with battery. “

Man Bulldozes Home: Wife’s Errands End With Home, Everything Inside In Rubble

” A man bulldozed his wife’s home down to the ground with everything inside it, and when he was asked why he didn’t let her know about it, he said that he tried to call her, but she didn’t answer her phone. The bizarre story coming out of New York certainly confirms one of the neighbor’s observations that while the husband is a “nice guy,” he is also a “loose cannon.” As reported by 4 New York on Jan. 21, when 48-year-old James Rhein’s wife came home to her house after running errands on Monday, she was extremely upset. “She was in the middle of the road screaming, ‘her house, what happened to her house?'”

Apparently, James Rhein is not a man of words but of action. The house on Woodland Avenue in Middletown in New York, which legally belonged to his wife, had problems with the foundation and was crumbling from years of disrepair. On Monday, while his wife was running some errands, James had some time on his hand to take care of the problematic house.

Since Monday was a federal holiday and all official offices to get a demolition permit were closed, Rhein took the matter into his own hands. He rented a bulldozer from a local construction company, got to work, and by the time his wife was done with her errands, the house was taken care of – as in bulldozed to the ground.”

Gallup: Obama Plummets To Lowest Annual Approval Rating Ever

140120ObamaYr_1_final

” With six years down and just two left in which to build a legacy, President Barack Obama has posted his lowest-ever average annual approval rating.

A Gallup poll finds that Obama, in the one-year period between Jan. 20, 2014, and Monday, posted an approval average of just 42.6 percent.

During their sixth year in office, Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon showed their lowest approval rating as well, with the sixth-year approval rating of every president since 1945 averaging just 45.5 percent, Politico notes.

President George W. Bush tapped out the lowest at 37.3 percent, while President Bill Clinton scored an average approval of 63.8 percent, just before the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, Politico reports. Ronald Reagan, in his sixth year, averaged a 59.9 percent approval rating, Gallup reports.”

For comparison Gallup provides us with the annual average approval ratings of all presidents since 1945 . As you can see below , Obama’s averages leave much to be desired .

Average Approval Ratings for U.S. Presidents by Year in Office, 1945-2015

It’s interesting to note that with the exception of his first year in office Obama’s approval rating has been consistently well below 50% , while every year he has fallen well below the average of all of our post WWII leaders .

‘Sociopathic’ Robots Could Overrun The Human Race Within A Generation

” We are all doomed to a dystopian future run and controlled by smart machines of our own making – or perhaps not.

At a session at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Stuart Russell, a leading expert on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, made the bold prediction that AI would overtake that of humans “within my children’s lifetime”.

The chief challenge was to control these advances by making sure that computers continue to serve human needs, rather than become a threat to them, the Berkeley professor argued.

To do so, it was imperative that robots were endowed with the same values as humans.

Professor Russell defined the ideal relationship as similar to that of Bertie Wooster and Jeeves where the long-suffering butler understands perfectly what his master wants without needing to be told.

However, it was possible to envisage a much more dangerous future where “sociopathic” robots become a threat to humans. “

Pew: Americans Say Obama Is A “Good Man” Who Is “Incompetent”

” As President Obama finishes the touches on his seventh State of the Union Address, to be delivered tonight at 9 P.M. Eastern Time (come to Reason.com for live blogging and tweeting), here’s something he can chew on: Pew Research asked Americans to sum him up in one word.

The most popular choices? “Good/Good man” and “Incompetent.” Intelligent is well represented as is “idiot/dumb/stupid,” honest, dictator, liar, awesome, and arrogant.

In the interest of #realkeeping, George W. Bush was viewed similarly at this point in his presidency:

At a comparable point in his presidency, incompetent, arrogant and honest were frequently used descriptions of George W. Bush. Bush’s approval rating was lower than Obama’s (33% for Bush then, 47% for Obama today) and negative terms were used more frequently to describe him.”

Of More Than 3,000 U.S. Counties, Just 65 Have Recovered From Recession, NACo Says

NACo 4 indicators

” Seven years after the recession began, only one in 50 U.S. counties has fully bounced back, according to a study the National Association of Counties released Monday.

The 2014 County Economic Tracker shows that 65 of the nation’s 3,069 counties have met or surpassed prerecession levels in four measured categories: jobs, unemployment rate, economic output and home prices.

Those places range from Anderson County, S.C., to McKenzie County, N.D., to Kodiak Island, Alaska.

National employment surpassed 2007 levels during 2014 and the U.S. gross domestic product had fully recovered from the recession by 2011. But the national unemployment rate was 5.6% in December compared with 5% when the recession began seven years earlier. And housing values in much of the country have yet to fully return.

The recovered counties are largely located in energy-rich areas and have small populations. Of the 65 recovered counties, 24 are in Texas and 16 are in North Dakota. The others are generally in the middle of the country, including nine in Minnesota and eight in Kansas.

None of the recovered counties has more than 500,000 residents.”

This article , more than any other demonstrates that the nearly $3 Trillion in government stimulus spending was nothing more than wasteful cronyism handed out to favored unions , interest groups and corporations . States With The Most People On Food Stamps

” With grocery bills priced as high as $1,300 per month as of late, some American workers simply cannot afford all of their groceries on top of everything else they already have to buy. This is why the government offers food stamps.

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service reports that as of September 2014, there were around 46.5 million individual food stamp recipients (22.7 million households) receiving an average benefit of $123.74 each (around $257 per household).

To be eligible, a household has to earn a gross income amount that’s less than 130% of the poverty level, or a net income amount (gross income minus deductions) that’s less than 100% of the poverty level for their family size.

This means, a single person can be eligible for food stamps if his or her gross monthly income is under $1,265 ($15,180 per year), and a family of four can be eligible if they gross less than $2,584 per month ($31,008 per year). The applicant also can’t be a wealthy person who simply doesn’t have a steady income source. So, if the applicant has thousands of dollars sitting in the bank, for instance, they won’t apply as cash assets are considered as well.”

And the “winner” is … our nation’s capital …

” 1. District of Columbia

• Number of food stamp recipients: 144,768

• Percentage of the state’s population on food stamps: 21.97%

• Total cost of just these benefits alone (That is, how much do just the money on those EBT cards cost the state?): Around $18 million

• Estimated cost of benefits alone per capita in this state: $27.19 per person “
