” Sunday night brings the 87th Academy Awards, but the social media conversation about the nominated films, actors and actresses has been going on for weeks. The maps below show which movies and people are winning the Facebook Oscar “conversation” from Jan. 1 to Feb. 16.

  If Facebook chatter determined which film wins the Oscar for Best Picture on Sunday, “American Sniper” would grab the statue – and it wouldn’t be close. The film about the life and war experiences of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle has dominated conversation about the Oscar nominees on the social media platform across the country.

“ American Sniper” talk made up 80% or more of the Facebook discussion about the Best Picture nominees in 9 of every 10 counties. And, of course, the film scored big at the box office.

  But click through the maps above and you’ll notice some differences in the patterns for other films that reveal how audiences can vary, depending factors such as racial composition and education level.”

” Early in American Sniper, the title character, Chris Kyle, stares through his crosshairs at a woman and child who may be preparing an attack on American troops. Even when the woman hands the boy an RPG, Kyle waits to pull the trigger. In one particular theater, with “the entire audience on the edge of their seats,” patrons start screaming, encouraging Kyle to “Just shoot him!

  Where was this theater? Somewhere near a U.S. military base, maybe? Or perhaps in the heart of a red state? Actually, this packed theater, “full and rowdy,” is in the Mansour Mall, in Baghdad.

  As everybody knows, Clint Eastwood’s film has been a box-office smash, praised for its directing and its performances, and attacked as a work of bloodthirsty, racist, militarist propaganda. One of the few things about the film that has received little attention is that it has been playing well in the Middle East, including in Iraq.

  A piece at Global Post addresses audience reaction at one upscale Baghdad theater, though the article is dependent on a small handful of interviews. The story is credited to “Susannah George in Beirut and a journalist in Baghdad.” 

The film has also been drawing big crowds in Lebanon. Edited versions have opened in several Gulf states, with cuts to a scene involving the Quran. Jordanian censors originally rejected the film outright, though distributors plan to submit a re-edited version. “

Box Office: ‘American Sniper’ Quickly Becoming No. 1 War Film Of All Time

 

 

 

” American Sniper has set its sights on another record: Within a matter of days, it will overtakeSteven Spielberg’s WWII classic Saving Private Ryan to become the top-grossing war-themed film of all time in North America, not accounting for inflation.

  Clint Eastwood’s history-making movie jumped the $200 million mark on Sunday, putting it ahead of Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor, another WWII title, which topped out at $198.5 million domestically in 2001. American Sniper is distinct from those two film in being set during a modern-day conflict.

  Saving Private Ryan, released in 1998, earned $216.7 million domestically. Taking inflation into account, that would equal roughly $312 million in today’s terms. But a record is a record, and the history-making Sniper will cross $216 million sometime this week for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

  Films addressing recent conflicts have had a decidedly mixed track record, but American Sniper is benefiting from a massive turnout in America’s heartland, as well as from its six Oscar nominations, including best picture and best actor for Bradley Cooper’s performance as the late Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL who fought in the second Iraq war.

  In celebrating Sniper’s $200 million milestone, Warners domestic distribution chief Dan Fellmansaid that Eastwood “created a gripping drama with a rare insight into the toll of war that has resonated with audiences in almost every demographic.” “

‘American Sniper’ Shatters Records With $90.2 Million Weekend

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

” “American Sniper” hit the bullseye, earning an astonishing $90.2 million in its debut weekend in wide release.

  It is now on pace to upend records for the Martin Luther King holiday and for the month of January, pulling in roughly $105 million over the four-day period. It’s also a new high-water mark for director Clint Eastwood, whose previous weekend record was the $29.5 million wide release opening for 2008’s “Gran Torino.” At 84, he’s still got it.

  For context’s sake, the previous top-grossing Martin Luther King weekend release was last year’s “Ride Along” with $48.6 million.

“ The movie has become a cultural phenomenon,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of domestic distribution. “It tore apart the record book and not by a little. By an enormous amount.”

“ American Sniper” recently picked up Oscar nods for best picture and best actor for star Bradley Cooper, and the awards buzz only intensified interest in the film. The war drama was co-produced and co-financed by Village Roadshow for less than $60 million. Early projections had pegged a wide release debut in the $40 million range.”

‘American Sniper’ Makes Eastwood’s Friday With $30.5M, Can It Hit $80M By Monday?

” Warner Bros. is reporting Friday at $30.5M for American Sniper - not only a January opening day record, but more than any Clint Eastwood film has ever made in a weekend. With a new batch of projections released this AM, studio B.O. analysts are seeing Warner Bros.’ American Sniper clearing $80M by Monday. Warner Bros. preferred not to comment on the lofty figures, which makes sense because it’s better to get another day under your belt as the weekend progresses and projections become more exact. All over town, executives are gobsmacked by the opening traction for this movie, the highest ever in Eastwood’s career, easily beating the wide 2009 expansion of his fierce drama Gran Torino which posted a FSS of $29.5M and a final domestic B.O. of $148.1M. 

  A combination of standard factors can be attributed to American Sniper‘s success: its A+ Cinemascore, six Oscar noms (including best picture, actor for Bradley Cooper), Eastwood’s pedigree, Cooper’s star power and sublime performance, not to mention Warner Bros.’ generating advance word of mouth with military screenings and veteran outreach.  The studio took great care in crafting TV spots that were emotionally relate-able and could break through at this time of year when there’s an onslaught of critically acclaimed titles vying for attention. Above all, many feel that the key reason why American Sniper is clicking with crowds of all ages and pulling infrequent moviegoers out the house, is because the true story a family-man war veteran truly connects with our culture at this point in time; especially with the everyday global horrors of war so close to home. “It felt like we opened against a Marvel movie,” remarked one studio executive about American Sniper‘s presence in the market, “the people portrayed in American Sniper — these are real life heroes to people in the same way that Marvel characters are heroes to fanboys.  But it’s the Marvel concept for adults.” “

Bradley Cooper On Portraying Famed Navy SEAL Chris Kyle

 

 

 

” In 2012, actor Bradley Cooper called up former Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Chris Kyle to discuss the movie he was developing based on Kyle’s memoir, “American Sniper.”

” I just thought I should get on the phone with him and let him know what I was willing to do for him, and to trust me,” said Cooper, who produced and starred in the new biopic, which has a scheduled national release on Jan. 16.

  Months later, the film’s screenwriter called Cooper with tragic news.

” Never did I think on Feb. 2, 2013, I would get a call from Jason Hall that Chris was murdered,” Cooper said in a Dec. 19 phone interview. “So that sure changed everything.”

  Kyle and a friend, Chad Littlefield, were shot to death on a Texas shooting range by Eddie Ray Routh, a Marine veteran whom they’d taken out to help work through his post-traumatic stress.

  The film pressed on, though. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the story follows Kyle through his early days as a Texas rodeo cowboy, to his time at SEAL training in 1999 and on to his four deployments to Iraq, where he racked up what’s believed to be the most confirmed kills in U.S. military history as a sniper with SEAL Team Three.

  Though some, such as Washington Post reporter Terrence McCoy, have questioned the accuracy of Kyle’s stories, Cooper said he focused on making a Global War on Terror film different from what’s already been done.

  Kyle’s relationship with his wife, Taya, and his difficulties reintegrating after deployment feature heavily.

” There hasn’t been a character study of a soldier that’s gone through this war that I’ve seen on film,” he said. “I liked that idea, and I thought framing it as a Western would be very interesting.”

‘American Sniper': Movie Review

 

 

 

 

 

 

” The best movies are ever-shifting, intelligent and open-hearted enough to expand alongside an audience. “American Sniper,” Clint Eastwood’s harrowing meditation on war, is built on this foundation of uncommon compassion.

  Helping Eastwood carry out his tricky mission is an outstanding performance by Bradley Cooper, who plays Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

  An easygoing Texas rodeo rider, Kyle impulsively signs up for military duty after a career-busting injury. On his first tour, he finds himself stationed on a rooftop in Fallujah, forced to decide whether the Iraqis in his crosshairs are terrorists or innocent civilians. This will become his surreal reality for the next several years, as he discovers a formidable gift for marksmanship.

  His ability to pick off enemies earns the attention of his local counterpart, a rebel appropriately called “the Butcher.” Kyle isn’t remotely intimidated by the bounty on his head; in fact, whenever he’s not situated above the city, he hits the ground, fearlessly leading door-to-door searches that only increase his reputation among other troops.”

” At this point in George W. Bush’s presidency, Hollywood uncorked a barrel of anti-Iraq-war movies, all of them in their varying styles trashing the American military or intelligence agencies as vicious murderers, rapists, and all-around freedom-tramplers. Most were duds because the public wanted nothing to do with those messages. But oh, did the critics love ‘em.

  In Obama’s “fourth quarter,” as he calls it, Clint Eastwood has released his movie “American Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, a NAVY Seal who survived four tours of duty in Iraq and was credited with an astonishing 160 confirmed kills. The story ended horribly in 2013, four years after he left the Navy, when he and a friend were shot down at a Texas shooting range. Oh, how the critics hate it.

  New York Times film critic A.O. Scott has indicted the film as political propaganda: “The politics of the Iraq war are entirely absent, which is a political statement in its own right,” he declared. “And though George W. Bush’s name is never invoked, `American Sniper’ can be seen as an expression of nostalgia for his Manichaean approach to foreign policy.” 

  Liberal film critics today don’t like the pairing of “military” and “hero” in the same breath. In their forever-Vietnam mentality, “duty, honor, country” are just fancy words for being tools of a ravenous military-industrial complex that lies its way into war for power and profit.

  Scott is a blatantly dishonest critic for a blatantly dishonest newspaper. Time and again, he demonstrates that films he sees as conservative must be denounced as ridiculously propagandistic, but films he sees as liberal aren’t propaganda, but important lessons for the country. Conservative films are often pulp; liberal films are often works of art.”

American Sniper’ Breaks Christmas Record In Limited Release

 

 

 

 

 

” “American Sniper” and “Selma” — the last awards contenders to open this year — have launched impressively in their Christmas Day debuts.

  Warner Bros.’ “Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, was particularly stellar with $240,212 at four venues — breaking the all-time record for a limited release under 10 screens on Christmas Day.

  It played in Dallas, Los Angeles and New York.

  Clint Eastwood directed the R-rated “American Sniper” from a script by Jason Hall, based on Chris Kyle’s autobiography about his tour of duty in Iraq and his struggles as a father and husband.

  Warner Bros. will expand “American Sniper” into a nationwide release on Jan. 16 — the day after Oscar nominations are announced.”

” A taut, vivid and sad account of the brief life of the most accomplished marksman in American military annals, American Sniper feels very much like a companion piece — in subject, theme and quality — toThe Hurt Locker. Starring a beefed-up and thoroughly Texanized Bradley Cooper as we’ve never seen him before, Clint Eastwood’s second film of 2014 is his best in a number of years, as it infuses an ostensibly gung-ho and patriotic story with an underlying pain and melancholy of a sort that echoes the director’s other works about the wages of violence. Unlike The Hurt Locker, however, this Warner Bros. Christmas release should enjoy a muscular box-office career based on the extraordinary popularity of its source book by the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, Cooper’s star status and its “God, country, family” aspects that will draw that part of the public that doesn’t often go to the movies. 

  The gun — along with its significance to the United States, past and present — has been Eastwood’s most frequent co-star since the beginning of his career and has played a major role in most of his best films, from the Westerns and the Dirty Harrys to the war dramas. As the title suggests, a gun — or, more precisely, an extremely high-powered rifle — shares the screen with Cooper here, although it is not at all fetishized in the manner that weapons are in the book. “

Eastwood Disappointed By Lack Of Bipartisanship

 

 

 

” Halftime in America is over and talking to the chair didn’t work, so Clint Eastwood’s taking his political disappointment directly to the people.

The actor, director and Man With No Name went on CNBC on Friday to lament the lack of bipartisan cooperation in Congress and to give some credit to former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson and former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles for at least trying back in 2010. He worried aloud that the intractable disputes between both sides of the aisle will lead to political complacency that will only further complicate national politics.

“It’s almost like they don’t give a damn,” Eastwood said. “If they don’t give a damn, why do they expect anybody else to?”

It’s been an unusually active political cycle for Eastwood, whose appearance in Chrysler’s “Halftime in America” Super Bowl ad last year in the middle of primary season made onlookers speculate which side he would take in the 2012 presidential election. He supported John McCain in 2008, but his dissatisfaction with President Barack Obama’s economic policies led him to the Republican National Convention and his conversation with a piece of furniture standing in for the president.”
