Snowden: ‘Lies’ From Gang Of 8 ‘Compelled Me To Act’

” Edward Snowden says “lies” from the Gang of 8 are part of the reason he felt “compelled … to act.” He made the statement in response to a question about his motivations in releasing classified information on the Guardian‘s website.

“I imagine everyone’s experience is different, but for me, there was no single moment. It was seeing a continuing litany of lies from senior officials to Congress – and therefore the American people – and the realization that that Congress, specifically the Gang of Eight, wholly supported the lies that compelled me to act.”

THE 2013 FARM BILL

” The Farm Bill is currently moving through Congress, and it’s bigger and more bloated than ever. This year’s version will spend nearly a trillion dollars on broken food and farm welfare over the next decade. Unfortunately, Congress is poised to rubber-stamp this bloated welfare bill known as the Farm Bill.

Americans For Prosperity strongly encourages Capitol Hill to consider real reforms and meaningful savings to the 2013 Farm Bill.”

New Poll Finds 62 Percent Of Americans Want Senate To ‘Move On To Other Issues’

” President Obama’s gun control express is quickly losing steam, at least according to a new poll conducted by Reason-Rupe which found that approximately two-thirds of Americans want the Senate to drop the gun control debate and “move on to other issues.”

The Reason-Rupe national poll surveyed 1,003 adults nationwide on mobile (503) and landline (500) phones and found that only 33 percent of respondents believed that the “Senate should debate and vote on gun control legislation again,” while the majority, 62 percent, would like the Senate to “move on to other issues.”

As for how the numbers breakdown across party lines, unsurprisingly a greater percentage of Republicans, 83 percent, favored “moving on” than compared with Democrats, 30 percent, wanting to “move on to other issues” and 51 percent wanting “to debate and vote again.”  A majority of independents, 66 percent, also wanted the Senate to take up other issues.

A recent Gallup poll found that only 4 percent of Americans mentioned guns as the nation’s top problem compared to 56 percent of Americans who viewed the current economic malaise as the nation’s number one problem.”

Share Your Stories With Us So We Can Help Get To The Bottom Of The IRS Scandal

IRSAbuse

” Senior IRS Officials did know about the targeting of tea party groups who were applying for a tax-exempt status.  In our statement on Bretibart.com, you can read our comments to the press.

Right now we need your help to move the Congressional hearings along and to insure the IRS is held accountable for their actions, lies, and abuse of power.

We are asking all Patriots around the country to help us with two things:

  1. We must insure that the hearings in Congress are substantive and get to the bottom of this scandal to reveal how deep it runs, how many other lies the IRS has told related to the these tactics, and what will be done to insure no other group of citizens is so unfairly discriminated against solely because they are speaking out against rampant government.  On Monday, call your Member of Congress and both of your Senators to let them know that we must get to the bottom of this scandal.
  2. We need to hear from you if you or your local group has felt intimidated by the IRS actions over the last 4 years. Are you part of a local group who applied for tax-exempt status? What is the status of that application?  Did you set out to form a group but were so intimidated by the IRS tactics that you abandoned that goal and wound up participating only as individuals rather than incorporating and coordinating activity with other groups?  Click through to share your story with us so we have the details needed as we proceed with our next steps. Together we can personalize the problem to show the public the actions by the IRS were against real citizens and remind them that no citizen should fear the IRS will be used as a political weapon.

Over the last four years, Tea Party Patriots have repeatedly stood up against the consolidation of power by the ruling elite in this country. We will not stand idly by while unelected bureaucrats and elected representatives disregard the fact they are supposed to be public servants and instead act as rulers to increase their own personal power and political position.  We will fight this problem with the IRS and we will win because our freedom depends on our ability to exercise our Constitutional rights.”

Recharged Tea Party Demands Justice In IRS Targeting Scandal

IRS_CBS

” “The Tea Party Patriots rejects the apology from the Internal Revenue Service,” Martin said in a statement. “The IRS lied. They lied before Congress in 2011, and they lied again [in the agency's apology]. We must know how many more lies they have been telling, and how high up the chain the cover-up goes.”

Attracting fury from Republicans and Democrats alike, the scandal gives recharged legs to the hands-off government network, which has seen a dip in influence since ushering into the Capitol a wave of freshman purists in 2010. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Mn , who’s largely faded from public view since her splashy but ultimately failed presidential bid, berated the “stunning abuse of power” arising from “political beliefs.” “

Bouncing Ball Politics

” For years, home ownership was a big “good thing” among both liberal Democrats like Congressman Barney Frank and Senator Christopher Dodd, on the one hand, and moderate Republicans like President George W. Bush on the other hand.

Raising the rate of home ownership was the big red bouncing ball that they pursued out into the street, in utter disregard of the dangers.

A political myth has been created that no one warned of those dangers. But among the many who did warn were yours truly in 2005, Fortune and Barron’s magazines in 2004 and Britain’s The Economist magazine in 2003. Warnings specifically about the dangerous roles of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were made by Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan in 2005 and by Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snow in 2003.

In pursuit of those higher home ownership rates, especially among low-income people and minorities, the many vast powers of the federal government — from the Federal Reserve to bank regulatory agencies and even the Department of Justice, which issued threats of anti-discrimination lawsuits — were used to force banks and other lenders to lower their standards for making mortgage loans.

What makes all this painfully ironic is that the latest data show that the rate of home ownership today is lower than it has been in 18 years. There was a rise of a few percentage points during the housing boom, but that was completely erased during the housing bust. Housing has been just one area where the bouncing ball approach to political decision-making has led the country into one disaster after another.”

Senators Quietly Seeking New Path on Gun Control

” Talks to revive gun control legislation are quietly under way on Capitol Hill as a bipartisan group of senators seeks a way to bridge the differences that led to last week’s collapse of the most serious effort to overhaul the country’s gun laws in 20 years.

Drawing on the lessons from battles in the 1980s and ’90s over the Brady Bill, which failed in Congress several times before ultimately passing, gun control supporters believe they can prevail by working on a two-pronged strategy. First, they are identifying senators who might be willing to change their votes and support a background check system with fewer loopholes.

Second, they are looking to build a national campaign that would better harness overwhelming public support for universal background checks — which many national polls put at near 90 percent approval — to pressure lawmakers.”

Help Us Remember Aaron Swartz By Participating in Our Week-of-Action, Demanding Congress Reform the CFAA

” Today, EFF and a host of organizations across the political spectrum are launching a week-of-action imploring Congress to reform the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA)—the expansive law used to prosecute the late activist and Internet pioneer Aaron Swartz.

We’re asking Congress for three specific, common-sense fixes to the CFAA, which will bring the outdated law into the 21st Century:

  • No more criminal penalties for violating a website’s fine print or an employee manual

  • No criminal penalties for circumvention techniques that protect privacy and promote security

  • Make penalties proportionate to offenses and stop punishing virtual crimes more harshly than physical world crimes”

Hundreds of Retired Special Ops Demand Congress Investigate Benghazi

” Seven hundred plus retired Special Forces veterans have signed an open letter addressed to the U.S. House of Representatives. “Special Operatipons Speaks” is demanding that there be a select committee be formed by Congress to investigate the attack that took place on September 11, 2012 in Benghazi, Libya. The following is the text of the letter that was sent. You can also sign the petition to demand Congress act on forming this select committee by clicking here.

To:  Members of The U.S. House of Representatives

Subject: The Benghazi attacks on 9/11/ 2012

The undersigned are a representative group of some 700 retired Military Special Operations professionals who spent the majority of their careers preparing for and executing myriad operations to rescue or recover detained or threatened fellow Americans. In fact, many of us participated in both the Vietnam era POW rescue effort, The Son Tay Raid, as well as Operation Eagle Claw, the failed rescue attempt in April of 1980 in Iran, so we have been at this for many years and have a deep passion for seeking the truth about what happened during the national tragedy in Benghazi.

The purpose of this letter is to encourage all members of the US House of Representatives to support H.Res. 36, which will create a House Select Committee on the Terrorist Attack in Benghazi. It is essential that a full accounting of the events of September 11, 2012, be provided and that the American public be fully informed regarding this egregious terrorist attack on US diplomatic personnel and facilities. We owe that truth to the American people and the families of the fallen.

It appears that many of the facts and details surrounding the terrorist attack which resulted in four American deaths and an undetermined number of American casualties have not yet been ascertained by previous hearings and inquiries. Additional information is now slowly surfacing in the media, which makes a comprehensive bipartisan inquiry an imperative. Many questions have not been answered thus far. The House Select Committee should address, at a minimum, the following questions:

1. Why was there no military response to the events in Benghazi?

a. Were military assets in the region available? If not, why not?

b. If so, were they alerted?

c. Were assets deployed to any location in preparation for a rescue or recovery attempt?

d. Was military assistance requested by the Department of State? If so, what type?

e. Were any US Army/Naval/USMC assets available to support the US diplomats in Benghazi during the attack?

f. What, if any, recommendations for military action were made by DOD and the US Africa Command?

2. What, if any, non-military assistance was provided during the attack?

3. How many US personnel were injured in Benghazi?

4. Why have the survivors of the attack not been questioned?

5. Where are the survivors?

6. Who was in the White House Situation Room (WHSR) during the entire 8-hour period of the attacks, and was a senior US military officer present?

7. Where were Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey during the crisis, and what inputs and recommendations did they make?

8. Where were Tom Donilon, the National Security Advisor, Denis McDonough, his deputy, Valerie Jarrett and John Brennan during the attacks, and what (if any) recommendations or decisions did any of them make?

9. Why were F-16 fighter aircraft based in Aviano, Italy (less than two hours away) never considered a viable option for disruption (if not dispersal) of the attackers until “boots on the ground” (troop support–General Dempsey’s words) arrived?

10. Were any strike aircraft (such as an AC-130 gunship) in the area or possibly overhead that would cause former SEAL Tyrone Woods to laser-designate his attacker’s position and call for gunship fire support, thereby revealing his own location that led to his death?

11. Who gave the order to “STAND DOWN” that was heard repeatedly during the attacks?

12. What threat warnings existed before the attack, and what were the DOD and DOS responses to those warnings? What data (which will reveal exact timelines and command decisions) is contained within the various SITREPS, records, logs, videos and recordings maintained by the myriad of DOD, Intelligence Community and State Department Command Centers that were monitoring the events in Benghazi as they unfolded?

13. Why did the Commander-in Chief and Secretary of State never once check in during the night to find out the status of the crisis situation in Benghazi?

14. What was the nature of Ambassador Stevens’ business in Benghazi at the time of the attack?

15. What guidance has been provided to survivors and family members since the time of the attack, and who issued that guidance?

16. Why are so many agencies now requiring their personnel that were involved in or have access to information regarding the events that took place in Benghazi sign Non-Disclosure Agreements?

This was the most severe attack on American diplomatic facilities and personnel since the attacks on the US Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998.  Thus far, it appears that there has been no serious effort to determine critical details of this attack. This is inexcusable and demands immediate attention by the Congress. Congress must show some leadership and provide answers to the public as to what actually occurred in Benghazi. Americans have a right to demand a full accounting on this issue.

A longstanding American ethos was breached during the terrorist attack in Benghazi. America failed to provide adequate security to personnel deployed into harm’s way and then failed to respond when they were viciously attacked. Clearly, this is unacceptable and requires accountability. America has always held to the notion that no American will be left behind and that every effort will be made to respond when US personnel are threatened. Given our backgrounds, we are concerned that this sends a very negative message to future military and diplomatic personnel who may be deployed into dangerous environments.  That message is that they will be left to their own devices when attacked.  That is an unacceptable message.

The House Select Committee should focus on getting a detailed account of the events in Benghazi as soon as possible. H. Res. 36 will provide a structure for the conduct of a thorough inquiry of Benghazi and should be convened immediately.

We ask that you fulfill your responsibilities to the American people and take appropriate action regarding Benghazi. With over sixty members of the US House of Representatives calling for this Select Committee already, it seems that the time is right to take appropriate action on Benghazi.

These brave men are calling up their representatives to do what they have done time and again and that is fulfill their oath. May God grant those in Congress the intestinal fortitude to stand up and do this very thing.”

Obamacare To Hit Home On Hill

” Capitol Hill is about to get up close and personal with Obamacare.

As in being covered by Obamacare next year.

During debate over the law in 2009, Republicans insisted that if members of Congress were going to put their fellow Americans into health care exchanges, they and their staffs should be in there, too.

“It’s necessary and only fair for Congress to live under the rules we pass for everyone else,” said Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, one of several Republicans who pushed for that requirement.

But vague language in this part of the law — which was passed three years ago this Saturday — has led to a slew of quirks and questions.

Staffers who work in lawmakers’ personal offices go into exchanges — but those who work for committees don’t. And the lawmakers themselves get Obamacare — unless they are among the roughly 40 senators and 115 House members on Medicare.

And there’s a big thorny unresolved question about money: whether members and staffers in exchanges will still get a significant part of their health insurance premiums subsidized by their employer, just like other government workers. If they lose that subsidy, it’s like getting a pay cut of several thousand dollars.

“The sad thing is, too many Americans will be dealing with this in 2014 — not just Hill staffers,” said Courtney Austin Lawrence, legislative director for Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.). “My general concern with the exchange and Obamacare goes far beyond my own individual coverage. I think it’s a bad policy for taxpayers, patients and physicians.” “

HARVARD STUDIES THE TEA PARTY

” A recent Harvard study entitled, “Do Protests Matter? Evidence from the Tea Party Movement,” examined the effect that protest has on political change. The study found that, “[P]rotests can build political movements that ultimately affect policymaking, and that these effects arise from influencing political views rather than solely through the revelation of existing political preferences.” The study was conducted by a team of researchers from around the world.

For all the talk on the left about how the Tea Party has splintered conservatives and been a drag on the Republican brand, the Harvard researchers discovered the opposite.

Amongst the conclusions derived from the exhaustive study, the report found that the Tea Party protests in 2009, “[I]ncreased turnout in favor of the Republican Party in the subsequent congressional elections and increased the likelihood that incumbent Democratic representatives decided to retire prior to the elections.”

The study continued, “Incumbent policymaking was also affected, as representatives responded to large protests in their district by voting more conservatively in Congress. In addition, we provide evidence that these effects were driven by a persistent increase in the movement’s strength.”

Most stunning, Harvard found that the Tea Party protests had a significant multiplier effects: for every protester, Republican votes increased by seven to fourteen votes.

The release of this study comes at around the same time as the release of a poll recently conducted by NSON that found that out of 500 American respondents, 47.8% identified with Tea Party principles while only 20.6% identified with progressive principles and 22.8% identified “neither.” “

Censorship In America: 34 Civil Liberties Groups Speak Out Against CISPA In Lead Up To Hearings

” On Monday, EFF and over 30 other Internet rights organizations sent a letter to members of Congress demanding they vote no on the “cybersecurity” bill known as CISPA. The letter starts off a week in which Congress will hold three different hearings about CISPA and computer and network security. In addition to the letter, each hearing will provide opportunity to voice many of the bill’s problems. We encourage you to join the fight and tell your Representative to say no to CISPA.

The first hearing this week will focus on the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) role in cybersecurity. In the past couple of years there has been a turf battle over whether the National Security Agency (NSA) or DHS should run the nation’s Internet and network security. Even after NSA head General Keith Alexander declared that civilian agencies should be in charge, the House didn’t get the message. The letter we sent highlights a loophole in CISPA allowing companies to bypass privacy laws and share potentially personal information directly with the NSA. We agree with General Alexander. Civilian control of our domestic cybersecurity is a necessity. “

Congress Blocked Kerry From Offering More Aid To Egypt

” Secretary of State John Kerry had hoped to offer considerably more aid to Egypt than the $250 million he announced during his trip to Cairo but was blocked by Congress, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) said.

“This is not the aid package that the administration wanted to announce,” Royce told The Hill. The administration wanted to release a “larger sum,” but bowed to the wishes of Royce’s committee as well as congressional appropriators, he said.

Royce wouldn’t say how much Kerry had hoped to announce, but the State Department has been pressing Congress to greenlight $450 million in direct aid since last fall.

“Our approach is not the full-throttle administration approach of delivering all the aid that they wanted to deliver, but rather a measured approach of tying tranches to results as it pertains to the peace treaty with Israel, to cooperation with respect to smuggling [into Gaza] and with respect to economic reforms to guarantee civil rights and the rule of law within Egypt,” he said. “That’s the pressure that we’re applying.” “

Obama: ‘I Am Not A Dictator’

“I am not a dictator,” President Obama said Friday while defending his efforts to stop the sequester. “I’m the president.”

Obama said there are limits to what he can do to get a deal on the sequester during a press conference in which he blamed Republicans for standing in the way of a deal.

But Obama on Friday characterized himself as the reasonable party in the talks and someone who couldn’t force Republicans to make a deal.

“I know that this has been some of the conventional wisdom that’s been floating around Washington that even though most people agree that I’m being reasonable, that most people agree that I’m presenting a fair deal, the fact that they don’t take it means that I should somehow do a Jedi mind-meld and convince them” to agree on a deal, Obama said.”

Bloomberg:Don't Panic,USA Has'Infinite Amount of Money'...

” We are spending money we don’t have,” Mr. Bloomberg explained. “It’s not like your household. In your household, people are saying, ‘Oh, you can’t spend money you don’t have.’ That is true for your household because nobody is going to lend you an infinite amount of money. When it comes to the United States federal government, people do seem willing to lend us an infinite amount of money. … Our debt is so big and so many people own it that it’s preposterous to think that they would stop selling us more. It’s the old story: If you owe the bank $50,000, you got a problem. If you owe the bank $50 million, they got a problem. And that’s a problem for the lenders. They can’t stop lending us more money.”

Nevertheless, Mr. Bloomberg said it wouldn’t be easy to find the spending cuts that do emerge. Accordingly, when Mr. Gambling suggested cutting “waste” could solve a significant portion of the deficit, Mr. Bloomberg flat-out disagreed.

“Listen, I’ve worked now in government for 11 years,” he said. “One of the problems is the definition of ‘waste.’ You think the programs that I want are waste. And I think the problems that you want are waste. It’s not like somebody is taking wheelbarrows full of dollar bills and throwing them out the window. It’s a question of definition, what is ‘waste’ and what is not. Everything we have was put in by Congress, signed by the president. There was a reason for it, or a constituency for it. Most of the tax breaks are designed to encourage or discourage economic activity.  There’s a reason for it.” “

Boehner : ‘How Much More Money Do We Want To Steal From The American People?’

” House Speaker  said he favors pushing for more spending cuts instead of new revenues to get the federal budget under control.

“You’re talking about how much — you’re asking a question, how much more money do we want to steal from the American people to fund more government? I’m for no more,” he said.

Boehner told reporters that President Obama wants to close tax loopholes as part of an agreement to avoid the looming sequester, but only so he can justify raising revenue for new government spending.”

Sequester This! President Obama’s Colossal Media Blunder

” President Obama has gone all-in trying to get Republicans to blink and serve up another round of tax increases in lieu of the looming spending sequester. Eschewing talks with Congress or any pretense of leadership, he is instead flying around the country burning $180,000 an hour on Air Force One laying out a parade of horribles that will descend upon us if the growth of federal spending were reduced by one iota.

Why is he doing this? Because the mainstream media are lapping it up. Poisoned meat coming to grocery shelves near you! Air traffic grinds to a screeching halt! Fires, murder, and mayhem in the streets as first responders are laid off! No visits to the Washington Monument! OK, it all makes for good copy.

Well, Jay, explain this to me: The most imperial president in American history, a man who boasts that he will rule by Executive Action if Congress refuses to pass legislation he favors, can’t figure out how to direct spending cuts in a way that does the least harm to the American people?”

See companion story :  After The Sequester, Bring On The Blame Game

” Just as every newsworthy weather event these days is blamed on global warming, every negative economic report between now and the 2014 midterm elections will be blamed on obstructionist Republicans, their ill-advised sequester, and their determination to ruin an otherwise recovering economy just to make Obama look bad. The only way to fix it? Hand total control of all three branches of government to the party that really knows how to party.”

“ The Defense Department said in early February that it would not deploy the U.S.S. Harry Truman to the Persian Gulf, citing budget concerns relating to the looming cuts known as the sequester.

“Under the Constitution, the President is commander-in-chief and employs the force. And so we now have the President going out because of this piece of paper and this agreement. ‘I can’t do what I need to do to protect the country,’” Woodward said.

“That’s a kind of madness that I haven’t seen in a long time,” he said.

Woodward’s harsh criticism came after he stirred controversy last weekend by calling out Obama for what he said was “moving the goal posts” on the sequester by requesting that revenue be part of a deal to avert it.”

Army Lays Out State-By-State Cuts In Report

Military Closings By State

” The Army estimates automatic budget cuts scheduled to take effect March 1 will have a $15 billion economic impact and affect more than 300,000 jobs nationwide, according to documents obtained by USA Today.

Hardest hit states include Texas, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Among the least affected: Delaware, Wyoming, Montana and Rhode Island.

The military faces $500 billion in budget cuts over 10 years from sequestration — automatic budget cuts. The Army anticipates that it will need to slash $18 billion in spending by the end of this fiscal year on Sept. 30.”

One Casualty Of The Sequester? Obama’s Entire Legislative Agenda

“ President Obama has been highlighting, with increasing urgency, all the ways in which the sequester – the across-the-board cuts to defense and nondefense discretionary spending scheduled to hit at the end of next week – would be bad for average Americans and could do serious damage to the economy.

What he hasn’t said, but what’s abundantly clear from looking at where the cuts would hit, is that the sequester also would make virtually all of Mr. Obama’s second-term legislative agenda, including a few items that have Republican support, essentially dead on arrival.

At an event Tuesday with first responders whose jobs could be eliminated by the sequester, Obama spelled out the consequences of allowing the cuts to take effect: ”This is not an abstraction,” he said. “People will lose their jobs.

Consider immigration reform, one of Obama’s top legislative priorities. With a bipartisan group of senators currently working on a bill – and with the Republican Party looking for new ways to reach out to Hispanic voters – it appears to have a decent chance of passing. But many conservatives have made clear that they will only support a comprehensive reform bill if it makes securing the border a precondition of giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

And beefing up border security could become all but impossible if the sequester takes effect – since it will force big cuts in the number of border patrol agents.”

As far as we can tell , with the exception of defense and border security cuts , everything else involves cuts to programs that the federal government has no business doing anyway . It would all be better left to the states . Why do we need to send tax dollars to DC so that they can take a cut and then redistribute them back to the states ? In the private sector that is called extortion .

Remember too that we are not really talking about LESS SPENDING , No , just a slower rate of growth in the spending . And another thing … When Obama says ” sequestration will devastate the economy” and kill jobs , think about how many jobs have been created with his trillion dollar “stimulus” scam . THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT CREATE JOBS ! Except taxpayer funded jobs and that does not ” GROW THE ECONOMY ” !

Explaining To The Left (as if they’ll listen) Why Raising The Minimum Wage Does Not Pay For Itself

” On the one hand, this is so elementary, it’s hard to believe anyone argues with it. But when you’re dealing with ideological true believers, you know they will argue withanything you say if it doesn’t line up with the faith. So don’t assume you’ve won the argument just because you point this out: Raising the minimum wage will worsen unemployment because, plain and simple, it raises the cost of labor.

Not only that, but it raises by statute the cost of the least productive laborers out there. There’s a reason minimum wage earners get the minimum. Their contribution represents minimal value. An employer who decides to hire such a person is accepting lack of experience, lack of training and lack of maturity, and is deciding to invest some time developing the worker and getting whatever minimal contribution they can make until they see if the investment pays off in the person’s improvement. Usually you’re not talking about people trying to support a family. Usually you’re talking about a 16-year-old kid. If you make it even more expensive than it already is to hire such people, businesses simply will not do it.”
