Twenty-Six Percent Believe Democratic And Republican Parties Do Adequate Job

Trend: Perceived Need for a Third Major U.S. Political Party

” Amid the government shutdown, 60% of Americans say the Democratic and Republicans parties do such a poor job of representing the American people that a third major party is needed. That is the highest Gallup has measured in the 10-year history of this question. A new low of 26% believe the two major parties adequately represent Americans.

The results are consistent with Gallup’s finding of more negative opinions of both parties since the shutdown began, including a new low favorable rating for the Republican Party, and Americans’ widespread dissatisfaction with the way the nation is being governed.”

Poll: 14 Percent Approve Of Congress

” Among GOP respondents, Congress has a 6 percent approval rating, down from 14 percent in December; among Dems, Congress has a 15 percent approval rating, down from 21 percent in December.

And Gallup noted that Congress’ approval rating for 2013 is looking to be a continuation of last year, when Congress had a yearly average approval rating of 15 percent — the lowest in Gallup’s 38-year history of asking the question.

Earlier this week, a Public Policy Polling poll found that Congress was less popular than NFL replacement refs, root canals and Canadian rock band Nickelback. “
