Damage Control For Dummies

“ Writing a column on the recent IRS abuses is a hazardous undertaking. The scandal is expanding so quickly that it’s hard to get a paragraph on paper without having to revise it with new, shocking details. As I write this, an unctuous-looking former IRS commissioner by the name of Douglas Shulman is telling the Senate Finance Committee that he knows nothing, to the consternation of Senator Max Baucus. A Democratic senator angry at a Bush-appointed bureaucrat over the targeting of Tea Party groups—strange times on Capitol Hill.

But even in post-scandal Washington, some things always stay the same. One of them is the inclination of many progressives to defend the president at all costs, no matter what the accusation. Some of these arguments—with their logical contortions and obstinate immunity to new facts—have been downright impressive. Media Matters, head to the job fair. America has a hack surplus.

Let’s take a look at six of these rationalizations that have been circulating on the left.”

Tea Party Flash Mob!

Published on May 21, 2013

” “The beauty of our country is that we can disagree,” says Jenny Beth Martin, who is the co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots. “And you can’t use the IRS to silent citizens.”

Martin was one of about 40 protestors who gathered today outside the Internal Revenue Service’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. to protest the agency for discriminating against tea party groups seeking tax-exempt status. Protestors came with signs bearing slogans such as “Don’t Target Me Bro” and “Suspend IRS Audits.” Similar rallies were held outside IRS offices across the country.

“We need a thorough investigation of who was involved,” says Martin. “And those that were involved need to be held accountable.”

Reason TV correspondent Kennedy was on the scene to see what today’s protest was all about.

IRS AND AP SCANDALS CAST A BIG CHILL ON FREE SPEECH

” Chilling effect. That’s the term lawyers and judges use to describe the result of government actions that deter people from exercising their right of free speech.

There have been plenty of examples in the past 10 days.

Anti-abortion groups were asked to pledge that they would never picket Planned Parenthood clinics. Organizers were asked numerous personal questions, including what they said in their prayers. If that’s not chilling, I don’t know what is.”

Peggy Noonan: This Is No Ordinary Scandal

” “Something big has shifted,” Noonan added. “The standing of the administration has changed. As always, it comes down to trust.”

Noonan, who served President Ronald Reagan, said that Obama, “as usual, acts as if all of this is totally unconnected to him. He’s shocked, it’s unacceptable, he’ll get to the bottom of it. He read about it in the papers.

“But he is not unconnected, he is not a bystander,” she said. “This is his administration. Those are his executive agencies. He runs the IRS and the Justice Department.

“A president sets a mood, a tone. He establishes an atmosphere. If he is arrogant, arrogance spreads. If he is to too partisan, too disrespecting of political adversaries, that spreads, too.”

She called the Internal Revenue Service scandal the more serious of those engulfing Obama.

“This was more systemic. It was an operation. The word was out: Get the Democratic Party’s foes,” she said.”

” PROTEST THE CORRUPTION – PROTEST THE CRIMINAL OBAMA IRS

Thanks to Barack Obama the Tea Party is once again outraged and motivated.

Did The IRS Give Mitt Romney’s Tax Returns To Harry Reid?

” During the 2012 presidential campaign, Harry Reid claimed to have intimate knowledge of what was secretly inside Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s tax returns.

As President Obama’s campaign slammed Romney nearly every day for not releasing more tax returns, the Senate majority leader repeatedly made the unsubstantiated claim that, at one point in his life, Romney hadn’t paid taxes for almost a decade.

He even did so from the floor of the U.S. Senate.

Since the new IRS scandal broke, Republicans have found the question of who Reid got his information from — and from where — intriguing.

“We all wondered how Harry Reid had Mitt Romney’s taxes,” Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski told The Daily Caller. “The question is, will he call for a full investigation into the IRS?” “

Recharged Tea Party Demands Justice In IRS Targeting Scandal

IRS_CBS

” “The Tea Party Patriots rejects the apology from the Internal Revenue Service,” Martin said in a statement. “The IRS lied. They lied before Congress in 2011, and they lied again [in the agency's apology]. We must know how many more lies they have been telling, and how high up the chain the cover-up goes.”

Attracting fury from Republicans and Democrats alike, the scandal gives recharged legs to the hands-off government network, which has seen a dip in influence since ushering into the Capitol a wave of freshman purists in 2010. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Mn , who’s largely faded from public view since her splashy but ultimately failed presidential bid, berated the “stunning abuse of power” arising from “political beliefs.” “

AP Exclusive: IRS Knew Tea Party Targeted In 2011

” Senior Internal Revenue Service officials knew agents were targeting tea party groups as early as 2011, according to a draft of an inspector general’s report obtained by The Associated Press that seemingly contradicts public statements by the IRS commissioner.

But on June 29, 2011, Lois G. Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt organizations, learned at a meeting that groups were being targeted, according to the watchdog’s report. At the meeting, she was told that groups with “Tea Party,” ”Patriot” or “9/12 Project” in their names were being flagged for additional and often burdensome scrutiny, the report says.

Among the other revelations, on Aug. 4, 2011, staffers in the IRS’ Rulings and Agreements office “held a meeting with chief counsel so that everyone would have the latest information on the issue.”

On Jan, 25, 2012, the criteria for flagging suspect groups was changed to, “political action type organizations involved in limiting/expanding Government, educating on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, social economic reform/movement,” the report says.”

Changing the criteria from “tea party” and “patriot” to “limiting government” and “educating on the Constitution/Bill of Rights” is an improvement ?

We are in the hands of a amateurish tyrant and the Chicago way has now become the Washington way .

IRS Grabs Man’s Tax Refund to Recoup Social Security’s Alleged $895 Overpayment to Mother 42 Years Ago

” Imagine if your parent received an over-payment from the government but decades later, the government took the money out of your tax return.

Gilbert Stokes, 60, of Jacksonville, said it happened to him.

“I’m angry,” Stokes said Wednesday morning.

Stokes felt the same way when he received a letter from the Social Security Administration in January.

“[The letter] said [SSA] was going to withhold my taxes unless I contacted about this social security over-payment,” Stokes explained.

Forty-two years ago in 1971, Stokes’ mother Ruby Lee received an over-payment of $895 while he was in the Navy.”

Your Tax Dollars At Work: Subsidizing The Security Of Wealthy Allies

” It’s Tax Day, and for millions of Americans that means ponying up to the IRS. The federal government does many things these days—most of which would be more efficiently carried out at the local level, or in the private sector. But Uncle Sam also engages in a particular form of charity that many Americans overlook: spending many tens of billions of dollars to defend wealthy, developed nations.

A new Cato infographic puts it all in perspective. It shows how much American taxpayers spend to subsidize the security, and to defend the interests, of other nations that are more than capable of defending themselves.”

” Looked at another way, U.S. alliances constitute a massive wealth transfer from U.S. taxpayers (and their Chinese creditors) to bloated European welfare states and technologically-advanced Asian nations.”

IRS: We Can Read Emails Without Warrant

” The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has claimed that agents do not need warrants to read people’s emails, text messages and other private electronic communications, according to internal agency documents.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which obtained the documents through a Freedom of Information Act request, released the information on Wednesday.

In a 2009 handbook, the IRS said the Fourth Amendment does not protect emails because Internet users “do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in such communications.” A 2010 presentation by the IRS Office of General Counsel reiterated the policy.

Under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of 1986, government officials only need a subpoena, issued without a judge’s approval, to read emails that have been opened or that are more than 180 days old.”

IRS Collecting Tax Payer Information From Facebook And Twitter

IRS_Spying_Social_Media

“WASHINGTON -

You have until April 15th to file a return – and the IRS will be collecting a lot more than just taxes this year.

According to several reports, the agency will also be collecting personal information from sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The government has said it would only check a Facebook page or twitter account if there is already red flag in a tax form.”

5 Govt Videos Every Bit as Terrible as the IRS Star Trek Parody

” Just how rotten and outrageous is the IRS’ notorious Star Trek training video that cost $60,000 to produce? It’s so bad the William Shatner – the man, the myth, the legend who played the interplanetary poon hound Capt. James T. Kirk on the original series – is appalled.

“So I watched that IRS video. I am appalled at the utter waste of US tax dollars,” tweeted Shatner yesterday.

While Shatner is absolutely right to be appalled, the real tragedy is that awful government-created videos are a dime a dozen.

Here are five more government videos that are every bit as insulting to the average taxpayer – and moviegoer – as the IRS Star Trek vid.

We don’t know what they cost to make, but we want our money back.”

ObamaCare Will Cost Your Family at Least $20,000

” Ok. First. Think about how much you pay for health insurance currently. Now, think about how much you are going to have to pay under the new ObamaCare laws. Well according to a new IRS regulation released, they assume the average family will pay a minimum of $20,000 for their health care plans.

The examples point to families of four and families of five, both of which the IRS expects in its assumptions to pay a minimum of $20,000 per year for a bronze plan.

“The annual national average bronze plan premium for a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children) is $20,000,” the regulation says.

Bronze will be the lowest tier health-insurance plan available under Obamacare–after Silver, Gold, and Platinum.”

It’s Bush’s Fault … Part ?

RICH PAID MORE REVENUE UNDER BUSH TAX CUTS

” According to IRS data, the “richest 1% paid $84 billion more in taxes in 2007 than they had in 2000,” a 23% increase. In addition, their “share of the overall income tax burden grew, climbing from 37% in 2000 to 40% in 2007.” All this occurred even though their rates went down. “
