” A pair of married veteran police officers were facing a slew of drug-related charges Friday in yet another scandal to hit the San Diego Police Department this year. “
” Bryce Charpentier, 32, and his 41-year-old wife, Jennifer, were taken into custody late Thursday morning in the East County and 4S Ranch, respectively, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, which said the arrests stemmed from a long-running task force investigation.
Each was arrested without incident on suspicion of conspiracy and sales, possession and transportation of a controlled substance. Bryce Charpentier also was expected to face a charge of being under the influence while in possession of a loaded firearm, sheriff’s officials said.”
” There’s yet another mystery now haunting San Diego’s embattled police department: The whereabouts of a million dollars in federal funds that haven’t shown up “on paper.”
It’s a case that’ll have to be solved by city financial experts and auditors because the cop shop’s numbers don’t square up.
It may be that somebody didn’t hit a certain number on a keyboard – at least that’s the best City Hall might hope for.
” To me, I’m not worried that it’s a crime; it doesn’t look like that,” said Sean Karafin, CEO of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association. “But it’s more of an issue of why was this not caught? Why has it taken four years for the media to be the ones to find it?”
The million-dollar discrepancy was turned up by the “U-T Watchdog”, which has been reviewing documents involving U.S. Treasury and Justice Department programs that share “forfeited assets” from drug dealers and other crooks with state and local law enforcement.”
” Former Secretary of State and potential Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, recently canceled her plans to appear as the keynote speaker for the 17th Annual Western Healthcare Leadership Academy, taking place April 11th in San Diego, amid planned fervent protests from local San Diego residents.
Protesters have organized under the banner of “The Difference Matters” coalition, a group that primarily consist of local San Diego women who refuse to allow Clinton into their community because of her alleged role in the Benghazi cover up scandal.
Clinton originally planned to deliver the speech in person, but it is now understood that she will speak to the audience via a satellite feed displayed onto a large projection screen during the conference, PR Newswire reports.”
” Dancers at a gentlemen’s club felt harassed and uncomfortable when the establishment was raided by nearly a dozen police officers who demanded to take pictures of the women and examine their bodies and permits.
The raid took place at Cheetahs Gentlemen’s Club on Thursday, March 6th. The evening was disrupted when 10 armed officers swarmed the business to “conduct a random inspection” of the ladies inside.
The 30 dancers were forced into the dressing room, where the police lined them up and photographed their nearly-naked bodies from every angle.
“ They made me feel like I was a gang member pretty much and they wanted to document every single one of my tattoos,” a dancer named Katelynn Delorie told ABC 10 News.”
” A 60-year-old woman who escaped from a Michigan prison 37 years ago has been captured in San Diego.
Judy Lynn Hayman made her flight from justice in 1977 after serving eight months for attempting to steal clothes from a Detroit-area store.”
” She was tracked down after severe winter weather forced a Michigan corrections officer to stay indoors, prompting him to dust off old files.
Lieutenant Charles Levens sent fingerprint requests to the FBI on all of the old cases and Hayman’s matched those of a woman arrested in San Diego.
Russ Marlan, a spokesman for the Michigan Corrections Department, said: “We can’t just write it off. We don’t have the ability to say, ‘It’s been a long time. You’re free to go.’”

” A new study from The Equality of Opportunity Project has mapped the 10 best and the 10 worst cities for economic mobility in the United States. Researchers from Harvard University and the University of California at Berkeley used millions of anonymous earnings records to measure the chance that someone born into the bottom fifth of income earners reaches the top fifth. A full summary of their findings can be viewed here.

” A drug-smuggling tunnel equipped with electricity, ventilation and a rail system has been found connecting San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Mexico.
Authorities seized more than eight tons of marijuana and 325lb (147kg) of cocaine in the discovery.
Officials have not revealed the exact length or location of the recently finished tunnel, but Mexican media report it is near Tijuana’s airport.
More than 75 such secret tunnels have been discovered since 2008.”
” For decades, recreational and commercial fishermen have exploited the unique relationship between yellowfin tuna and certain species of porpoise (aka dolphin) in the Eastern Pacific. Schools of yellowfin swim with pods of spotted dolphin and spinner dolphin in the tropics, as well as Pacific common dolphin and white-sided dolphin as far north as Southern California in warmer months. Commercial fishermen look for the dolphin and then wrap up the pod with purse seines to capture the schooling tuna below, sometimes killing dolphin in the process. Recreational fishermen troll lures or put baits in front of the pod to catch yellowfin.
Most anglers, including me, have always believed that the relationship was born out of the search for food, though no one knew if the porpoise were leading the tuna to food or vice versa. However, recently published research indicates that the tuna follow the dolphin, but food is not the primary reason. “
” With the returns from deployment of the carrier DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER on Dec. 19, and the amphibious ships IWO JIMA and NEW YORK on Dec. 20, the piers at Norfolk’s naval base are about as full up as they’ll ever be.
Five aircraft carriers, four big-deck amphibious assault ships, a full cast of “small boy” surface warships, along with nuclear submarines and support ships, are crowding the base, giving a comfortably snug feeling to the waterfront. Similar scenes — although not with the gathering of flattops seen here — are taking place at other fleet concentration areas like San Diego and Pearl Harbor. “

” To cleanse the palate. I was going to do a post on the Higgs boson, but what would you rather spend time on? Reading a dummy like me try to find insight about afantastically complex matter of particle physics or watching the single most awesome 15 seconds of fireworks that you’ll ever see? The bad news: The crowd apparently was bummed that hours of waiting outside paid off with less than half a minute of sparkly fun goodness. The good news: I’m reasonably sure that this is going to be the first Instagram pic to win a Pulitzer. Looks like a sexy space amoeba descending to Earth to spread love and music and hallucinogens and maybe a radioactive pathogen that’ll kill us all. Can’t wait to see which band buys the rights to it as cover art for their next album. “
Here’s hoping so , anyway .
“Election results from Wisconsin and the California cities of San Jose and San Diego communicate a simple message that is likely to be misunderstood by Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives.
The short version: Voters everywhere are finally starting to realize that municipalities, states, and (here’s hoping) the federal government are out of money. That’s the real message of the major contests last night.”
