Terror Raids: AFP, ASIO Move On Suspected Terrorists In Biggest Counterterrorism Raid In Australia’s History

Where the raids happened.

” Police backed up by armoured cars arrested at least 15 people of people in 12 separate pre-dawn operations in NSW, plus three more in Brisbane.

The combined effort amounted to the largest anti-terrorism operation in Australian history — and senior officers revealed the attack by a suspected terrorist cell was imminent.

It is believed police intercepted a phone call outlining a plan to kidnap a random member of the public and murder them by beheading, while filming the act to post on social media.

It is also understood the group had planned to target a tourist, possibly in Martin Place in the CBD.”

Rare White Whale Returns to Australia, Delighting His Local Fans

” This week, an extremely rare albino whale was spotted off the coast of Australia. The whale’s name is Migaloo, the Aboriginal word for “white fellow.” This is the third year in a row Migaloo has been spotted on his annual migration, lovingly referred to as a whale parade. Now Australian Migaloo watchers are tracking his every movement — on Thursday he was spotted making his way past the Sydney coast.

Migaloo is one of only a few documented all-white humpback whales in the world. Another all-white whale was spotted in Norway, and a mostly white whale has been seen off the coast of Argentina.

He was first seen in 1991 as a juvenile. It is unclear how old Migaloo is, but scientists estimate he is in his twenties, so he might be a millennial whale. Like any good millennial, he has an active Twitter account, @Migaloo1. “

‘Baby With Two Faces’ Survives Against Odds

” The girls, named Hope and Faith, were born last week and while they share the same body and internal organs, they have separate brains in the one skull.

Simon Howie and partner Renee Young learned the babies would be born conjoined early in the pregnancy but decided they wanted to go through with the birth despite advice from some doctors.

They were born six weeks prematurely by emergency caesarean at Blacktown hospital.

Speaking on the Australian TV programme “A Current Affair” Ms Young said: “If I only get two days with the baby I only get two days. I’ll at least have some time with her.”

The babies have a condition called craniofacial duplication or diprosopus, just dozens of cases of which have been recorded.”

2 Cruise Passengers Fall Overboard Off Australia

” Authorities were conducting an air and marine search Thursday off Australia’s east coast for two cruise passengers who were believed to have fallen overboard the night before.

The couple, Australian citizens from New South Wales state, were discovered missing Thursday morning after the Carnival Spirit docked at Sydney’s Circular Quay, at the end of a 10-day journey, said New South Wales Police Superintendent Mark Hutchings.

He said surveillance camera footage showed that the couple — a 30-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman whose names have not been released — fell from the ship’s mid-deck Wednesday night, when the ship was about 65 nautical miles off the coast of Forster, a city 185 miles north of Sydney.”

The World’s 10 Longest Auto Races

” Racing 500 miles around a smooth paved oval? Kid stuff. The world’s longest rally races have stretched for thousands of miles across continents, through deserts, and over mountains.”

” 1977: Singapore Airlines London to Sydney Rally

Total Distance: 17,500 miles

In 1968, the London Daily Express and Daily Telegraph newspapers sponsored a marathon rally of 7000 miles from London to Sydney. The insane race stirred up some heroic stories of resourcefulness for the papers, and it spawned a series of intercontinental rallies. One of these was a rally from London to Mexico called the World Cup Rally, which coincided with the soccer championship in Mexico City that year. Another was the 1974 London-Sahara-Munich rally. But the ultimate race in this series was the second running of London to Sydney, which covered 17,500 miles. Rally driver Andrew Cowan won the marathon race in a Mercedes 280E. Vintage re-creations of the 1977 rally have been held on several occasions since. “
