Sydney Hostage Situation Ends After 16 Hours At Australia Lindt Chocolat Cafe

” The standoff ended when a loud bang was heard from the Lindt Chocolat Cafe and five people ran out. Then police swooped into the building, and there was a flurry of loud bangs.

The gunman was identified by local media as Man Haron Monis, who is facing charges including sexual assault and accessory to murder in separate cases. A police official said “you wouldn’t be wrong” in identifying the 50-year-old Monis as the gunman. Under department rules, officials do not identify themselves unless speaking at a formal news conference.

Monis has long been on officials’ radar. Last year, he was sentenced to 300 hours of community service for writing offensive letters to families of soldiers killed in Afghanistan. He was later charged with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife. Earlier this year, he was charged with the sexual assault of a woman in 2002. He has been out on bail on the charges.

” This is a one-off random individual. It’s not a concerted terrorism event or act. It’s a damaged goods individual who’s done something outrageous,” his former lawyer, Manny Conditsis, told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

” His ideology is just so strong and so powerful that it clouds his vision for common sense and objectiveness,” Conditsis said. “

Brutal Police Beating Of Model Shocks Australia (VIDEO)

” A video showing three Sydney police officers brutally beating a young woman has gone viral, with over 750,000 views on Facebook. During the clip, the victim is repeatedly hit with a police baton and appears to be kicked in the head by a male officer.

Police brutality has been hitting the headlines in the US, but now it seems the unfortunate trend has made its way to Australia. The woman in question, Claire Helen, who works as a model and actress and was on the receiving end of recurring blows from a police officer, said: “It was the most frightening and humiliating experience of my life.”

Law enforcement officers allege that Helen punched a policewoman in the mouth, as well as resisting arrest – an action that the model stringently denies. “They pushed me down. They hit me and kicked me. They pulled my dress over my head,” she said, speaking to Channel Nine. Onlookers could be heard shouting, “Let her go,” and, “She’s not resisting arrest.”

Helen, who is 1 meter, 60 centimeters tall and weighs 55 kilograms, insists she was just enjoying a quiet night out when she was accosted by law enforcement officers, who were much bigger than her.

” We weren’t drunk. We’d been with people playing soccer and went out to have a few drinks. I’m not the sort of person who goes out getting pissed on a Wednesday night. I’m trying to make it as a model and actress. I can’t go out every night getting wasted. I definitely don’t ever get in circumstances like this,” she told Channel Nine news.

The incident happened in the Kings Cross area of Sydney, which is home to a number of bars and nightclubs, after Helen and a group of friends haggled over a taxi fare, according to police. The law enforcement agency also added that a male member of the group punched the taxi driver in the stomach.

However, Helen alleges that the taxi driver had charged the group the wrong amount, which led to the trouble starting. “

Baby Boy Found Alive At Bottom Of Drain

” A newborn baby has been found 2.5 metres down a drain in Sydney after cyclists passing by heard crying.

After pulling away the concrete drain cover they found the baby, thought to be two or three days old, lying at the bottom wrapped in a hospital blanket.

The child’s mother, aged 30, has now been identified following hospital record checks and house-to-house enquiries in the Sydney suburb of Quakers Hill.

Police say she is assisting them with their investigation.

The alarm was raised by a group of cyclists riding along the bike track beside the M7 highway. They heard cries from the drain at around 7.30am on Sunday.

”  It was disturbing (to see) how the child was placed in the drain,” Quakers Hill duty officer Inspector David Lagats said.

”  We all thought the worst but the baby was still alive.” “

The baby’s mother has been charged with attempted murder . Read more at Sky News

Terror Raids: AFP, ASIO Move On Suspected Terrorists In Biggest Counterterrorism Raid In Australia’s History

Where the raids happened.

” Police backed up by armoured cars arrested at least 15 people of people in 12 separate pre-dawn operations in NSW, plus three more in Brisbane.

The combined effort amounted to the largest anti-terrorism operation in Australian history — and senior officers revealed the attack by a suspected terrorist cell was imminent.

It is believed police intercepted a phone call outlining a plan to kidnap a random member of the public and murder them by beheading, while filming the act to post on social media.

It is also understood the group had planned to target a tourist, possibly in Martin Place in the CBD.”

Rare White Whale Returns to Australia, Delighting His Local Fans

” This week, an extremely rare albino whale was spotted off the coast of Australia. The whale’s name is Migaloo, the Aboriginal word for “white fellow.” This is the third year in a row Migaloo has been spotted on his annual migration, lovingly referred to as a whale parade. Now Australian Migaloo watchers are tracking his every movement — on Thursday he was spotted making his way past the Sydney coast.

Migaloo is one of only a few documented all-white humpback whales in the world. Another all-white whale was spotted in Norway, and a mostly white whale has been seen off the coast of Argentina.

He was first seen in 1991 as a juvenile. It is unclear how old Migaloo is, but scientists estimate he is in his twenties, so he might be a millennial whale. Like any good millennial, he has an active Twitter account, @Migaloo1. “

‘Baby With Two Faces’ Survives Against Odds

” The girls, named Hope and Faith, were born last week and while they share the same body and internal organs, they have separate brains in the one skull.

Simon Howie and partner Renee Young learned the babies would be born conjoined early in the pregnancy but decided they wanted to go through with the birth despite advice from some doctors.

They were born six weeks prematurely by emergency caesarean at Blacktown hospital.

Speaking on the Australian TV programme “A Current Affair” Ms Young said: “If I only get two days with the baby I only get two days. I’ll at least have some time with her.”

The babies have a condition called craniofacial duplication or diprosopus, just dozens of cases of which have been recorded.”

2 Cruise Passengers Fall Overboard Off Australia

” Authorities were conducting an air and marine search Thursday off Australia’s east coast for two cruise passengers who were believed to have fallen overboard the night before.

The couple, Australian citizens from New South Wales state, were discovered missing Thursday morning after the Carnival Spirit docked at Sydney’s Circular Quay, at the end of a 10-day journey, said New South Wales Police Superintendent Mark Hutchings.

He said surveillance camera footage showed that the couple — a 30-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman whose names have not been released — fell from the ship’s mid-deck Wednesday night, when the ship was about 65 nautical miles off the coast of Forster, a city 185 miles north of Sydney.”

The World’s 10 Longest Auto Races

” Racing 500 miles around a smooth paved oval? Kid stuff. The world’s longest rally races have stretched for thousands of miles across continents, through deserts, and over mountains.”

” 1977: Singapore Airlines London to Sydney Rally

Total Distance: 17,500 miles

In 1968, the London Daily Express and Daily Telegraph newspapers sponsored a marathon rally of 7000 miles from London to Sydney. The insane race stirred up some heroic stories of resourcefulness for the papers, and it spawned a series of intercontinental rallies. One of these was a rally from London to Mexico called the World Cup Rally, which coincided with the soccer championship in Mexico City that year. Another was the 1974 London-Sahara-Munich rally. But the ultimate race in this series was the second running of London to Sydney, which covered 17,500 miles. Rally driver Andrew Cowan won the marathon race in a Mercedes 280E. Vintage re-creations of the 1977 rally have been held on several occasions since. “
