The Dakotas Top The List Of Happiest U.S. States, With West Virginia At The Bottom

The art of happiness: The northern green states are in the top quintile for well-being, while the states in red are at the bottom

” An annual survey that measures Americans’ sense of well-being has revealed that North Dakota and not longtime frontrunner Hawaii is the state with the most contented people.

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index showed that in 2013, North Dakota scored highest, followed closely by its southern neighbor South Dakota.

Hawaii trailed the Upper Midwestern states in eighth place, while for the fifth year in a row West Virginia and Kentucky had the two lowest scores.”

This annual poll seems to show a great deal of mobility in terms of change from one year to the next as the chart below demonstrates … witness Wyoming’s drop from 13th in 2012 all the way down to 34th last year while North Dakota was the champ in terms of upward mobility , gaining 18 spots from 19th in 2012 to 1st last year .

The categories used to make Gallup’s happiness determinations include emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors and basic access to services .

What a difference a year makes: Some states made remarkable progress from 2012 to 2013, but the bottom three remained the same

Perhaps the most startling revelation lies with the fact that three states showed no movement at all … those being the bottom three , Mississippi , Kentucky and West Virginia at numbers 48 , 49 and 50 respectively , with Kentucky and West Virginia holding the bottom two spots for the past five years . The Daily Mail has the details .
