Air Force Veteran Looking For Girl He Rescued After Hurricane Katrina

” A veteran is asking for help finding a young girl he rescued nearly 10 years ago after Hurricane Katrina.

An embrace between the two was preserved in a photo. The picture of Staff Sgt. Michael Maroney hugging the girl became a prominent symbol after Katrina devastated New Orleans.

Maroney was with an elite Air Force pararescue unit, The Air Force Times reports. He had arrived in New Orleans seven days before the picture was taken. He moved from rooftop to rooftop looking for people to help, the Air Force Times reports. Maroney often felt helpless in the flood-ravaged city.

The veteran told the Air Force Times he remembers descending between treetops and power lines to save the pictured girl’s family. Maroney found a mom, dad and five children, including the little girl in a pink shirt and pigtails.”
