Incredible New 3D Printing Technique Looks Like Sci-Fi

” A new innovation by Carbon3D, unveiled Monday at the TED2015 conference, could finally move 3D printing out of the hobby shop and onto every factory floor.

Imagine you’re in an emergency room with a blood vessel blockage. To save your life, a surgeon will first insert a tube, and carefully guide it through the clog. Then she might insert a stent, a piece metal or fabric mesh, to keep the vessel open. But that piece of hardware isn’t made to fit your body. Carbon3D can make one that does.

” The idea that you could produce a biodegradable stent that takes in your own anatomy and the tributaries of your blood vessels while you’re on the catheter table in an emergency room — that’s an amazing new future that is now in reach,” said Joseph DeSimone, CEO and co-founder of Carbon3D and a chemistry professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.

It all started in Japan with a tiny house that took 4.5 hours to build. It was made of plastic and measured 2.5 inches across and 2 inches high and had “partitions, furniture, and stairs.” It was one of the first 3D printed items to ever exist. That was 1981.”

Popular Mechanics brings the news of revolution in the micro-printing area of additive manufacturing while from the more macro side of the technology comes news of cheap 3D printed homes for the third world

” Back in July, the WASPProject unveiled to us their plans to 3D print homes in 3rd world countries using nothing but a 3D printer and clay made from native soil. The idea is a tremendous one, one which could be extraordinarily groundbreaking when it comes to creating shelter for poverty stricken nations.”

waspextruder2

” Clay is abundant, and these 3D printers are quite affordable compared to other machines on the market. Providing a single 3D printer to small communities where there is little to no structurally sound housing, could provide for a solution to one of the world’s biggest problems.  The fabrication of multiple homes in a short amount of time, is exactly what WASP is hoping to accomplish.”

It’s The World’s Biggest House For Sale – And It’s Top Secret

Castle for sale near Siena

” It says something about London’s affluenza that for the price of a five-bedroom penthouse in Connaught Place, Hyde Park, you could buy a whopping Italian estate with a 12th-century medieval castle and a sprinkling of Tuscan farmhouses in the grounds, where the number of bedrooms adds up to 115, with 100 bathrooms on the side. The first costs £20m and the second €28m (£19.8m).

This castle just east of Siena, wrapped in 630 hectares planted with 1,500 olive trees producing award-winning olive oil, is thought to be the largest property in the world currently on the market. But the Italian market is as keen on discretion as the Mafia is on anonymity, so even the name of this prize piece of history is being kept firmly under the estate agent’s pillow.

The setting in Tuscany, the medieval courtyard with tower and chapel, the Italianate gardens with palms and box hedges, the interiors with marble floors and elaborate painted ceilings, make it so romantic that it is sometimes hired for weddings. It goes without saying that there is plenty of room for guests to sleep, as well as pools for them to swim in.

“ It is exceptionally beautiful. There are many castles in Tuscany but very few are medieval,” says the agent John Jonk of Sotheby’s International (0039 05507 51888; sothebysrealtycom). “The approach to it is wonderful and you go into another world. There are thousands of wild boar and roe deer, magical woods, vineyards, olive groves and grain fields. On the estate it is always silent. The castle was built at a time just before Giotto, when the Renaissance lay around the corner and Siena was at war with Florence.”

Dubai Torch Tower: Fire Sweeps Through One Of The World’s Tallest Apartment Towers

” Security guards inside one of the world’s tallest residential towers ran from apartment to apartment as fire alarms blared, calling for those inside to evacuate the building as part of it burned.

Kathryn Dickie, who lives on the 13th floor of The Torch in Dubai, told ABC News that the fire alarms began going off about 2 a.m. local time Saturday.

Dickie said residents believed the fire began near the 51st floor of the 1,100-foot-tall tower. She ran to a friend’s apartment nearby, where they watched firefighters battle the blaze.”

” Dickie posted a video about 4:20 a.m. local time showing the fire going out. The blaze appeared to be extinguished a few hours after it began, reports The Associated Press.”

Unfinished – The Story Behind One Of America’s Most Striking Homes – Steel House

Robert Bruno's Steel House

” You first see it, this unlikely vision, shortly after turning onto Canyon View Drive, a gently rolling street lined by the kind of anonymous homes that define American suburbia.

What is peeking up over the horizon is something decidedly different, however, and soon enough you will come upon it in all its remarkable glory: a four-legged organism of blackened steel perched on a scruffy ridge, its curving forms resolving themselves in a postcard view over the blue waters of a recreational lake. It could easily be something landed from outer space, the kind of house a James Bond villain might occupy, if he were to put down roots in a nondescript residential development 15 minutes from the drowsy heart of downtown Lubbock.

Inside, there are no aliens and no cinema bad guys. The house itself is unoccupied and has been since 2008, when Robert Bruno, the charismatic if somewhat mysterious sculptor who had made the house his life’s work, died at age 64 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer.

As meticulous as he was capricious, Bruno had built the house with virtually no assistance over the course of some 30 years, designing and modifying it as he went, frequently tearing out portions that no longer pleased him. On an apparent whim, he was known to jettison months of work. It was a process that seemed to take as many steps backward as forward and left friends and neighbors to wonder if he would ever finish. Indeed, after so many decades, they had come to understand that finishing was something that didn’t matter to him.”

Inside The Steel House

I wasn’t able to embed the above photo in it’s PTgui format , but if the reader clicks the picture they will be taken to the original article where the above interactive picture may be manipulated in any direction thus providing a breathtaking view of the entire inside of Mr Bruno’s creation … Highly recommended

” By the end of his life, the house had grown into a four-legged beast, with three principal levels sprawling over some 2,200 square feet. To enter it from the street, one crossed a short gangplank, as if boarding a ship, which led to an arched doorway fronted by a gate of looping steel. Passing through it, one fully entered Bruno’s world, a multidimensional universe of swooping ribbons of rust-colored steel, with floors shifting up and down, and walls twisting and turning and fusing into themselves. Beckoning one forward into the space was a sunken living room with a lozenge-shaped picture window, its panes divided by curving steel tracery, that looked out dramatically on Lake Ransom Canyon.

Bruno’s makeshift bedroom, minimally furnished with a bed, a streamlined wooden desk he designed for himself and an antique Chinese cabinet, was set in an adjacent alcove, with a small bathroom to its side. A kitchen and second bedroom, stuffed with junk, could also be found on that main level. A torquing stairwell, with treads of dark olivewood, led to the top floor, an aerie with a long curving window and a patio off to the side, a space that seemed like nothing so much as the bridge of a ship.

“ If you look at it in the aspects of a house, I don’t know why anyone would want to live in it, but of course it’s art,” says Charles Hobbs, 79, a retiree with the bearing of John Wayne. Hobbs watched Bruno from the porch of his ranch house across the street. “I made the mistake one day of asking him if he was going to paint it, and he straightened me out real quick. If you painted it, it would be just like any other house.” “

Salisbury Cathedral Spire Climb December 2014

Watch as Philip Scorer ascends the Salisbury Cathedral spire to perform needed repairs on the weather station …

Here is another video of the men at the very top doing the repairs to the anemometer and enjoying the view from 400 feet up … not for the faint of heart …

Here is yet one more view of the spectacular climb up the Cathedral’s spire , complete with some conversation with the men before they begin their ascent .

Published on Dec 18, 2014

” Man takes the ultimate selfie from the top of Wiltshire’s Salisbury cathedral while filming scheduled repair work.

Is this Britain’s most terrifying selfie? Daredevil conservationist snaps a pic of himself at the top of Salisbury Cathedral’s 404ft spire

A daredevil conservationist and his team have taken Britain’s most stomach-churning seflie – from the top of a 404ft medieval spire.

Gary Price, 46, clerk of works at Salisbury Cathedral in Wiltshire, and a team of helpers took a number of pictures from the capstone at the very top of the spire while carrying out repairs.

Kitted out in ropes, a harness and a hard hat Mr Price, who is in charge of the cathedral’s conservation, made the hair-raising climb to replace a faulty wind meter accompanied by rope access specialists.

He climbed the 332 steps inside the cathedral to the base of the tower before scaling ten narrow ladders inside the spire to a small weather door.

He then climbed through the door and pulled himself up the last 30 feet to the capstone using rungs set into the outside of the spire’s masonry.

It is only the fourth time Mr Price, from Salisbury, has made the climb and something that will not be repeated for another three or four years.
He replaced the anemometer, a device for measuring wind speed, which had stopped working properly in wind and rain.

Mr Price and his team also abseiled down the east side to check out and plug a leak that was discovered as a result of the September storms.

While most cathedrals in medieval times took centuries to build, Salisbury’s was erected in just 38 years by 300 men from 1220 to 1258.

The spire was added later between 1300 and 1330 and the cathedral is the tallest medieval structure in the world.

Salisbury Cathedral also has Britain’s largest cloister and largest cathedral close, the world’s oldest working clock and the best surviving of the four original copies of the Magna Carta.

Mr Price said: ‘It’s a very exciting day for me because I don’t get to go up the spire very often at all and it’s probably going to be the last time for another three or four years.

‘ The cathedral is the tallest medieval structure in the world, 404ft to get to the capstone.

‘ When you climb out the weather door the spire is quite wide, but the higher you go the more narrow it gets and you do feel a bit like “is this going to take my weight?” but it will, it’s been there for 800 years.

‘ It is quite exposed and you can see all the way around you.

‘ When you get up there your heart is definitely in your mouth and all of your senses are heightened.

‘ You’re super safe but it’s certainly an adrenaline rush.

‘ The hardest bit is making yourself climb out of the door when you’re perfectly safe inside and when you abseil back down to go in the door, with the harness and all the equipment you need and it’s a narrow door it can be quite tight to get back in.

‘ If there’s two or three of you up there and one of you moves you can feel the spire slightly swaying.’ “

” You will want to remember this date March 26, 2015.

According to one of the top minds in the U.S. Intelligence Community, that is when the United States will enter the darkest economic period in our nation’s history.

An alarming pattern has caused many in the Intelligence Community to secretly prepare for a “worst-case scenario.”

And alarmingly, he and his colleagues believe the evidence they’ve uncovered proves this outcome is impossible to avoid.

In an exclusive interview with Money Morning, Jim Rickards, the CIA’s Financial Threat and Asymmetric Warfare Advisor, has stepped forward to warn the American people that time is running out to prepare for this $100 trillion meltdown.

” Everybody knows we have a dangerous level of debt. Everybody knows the Fed has recklessly printed trillions of dollars. These are secrets to no one,” he said.

” But all signs are now flashing bright red that our chickens are about to come home to roost.”

10,000 Year-Old House Uncovered Outside Jerusalem

” A remarkable archaeological find in the Judean lowlands southwest of Jerusalem includes a six-millennia-old cultic temple and a 10,000-year-old house.

The ancient sites were located in routine archaeological digs conducted ahead of a planned expansion of Route 38, the main access road to Beit Shemesh. The building is the oldest ever found in the area, and constitutes remarkable “evidence of man’s transition to permanent dwellings,” researchers said Monday.

Labeling it “a fascinating glimpse into thousands of years of human development,” the Israel Antiquities Authority, together with the Netivei Israel Company that is carrying out the highway expansion, invited the public to visit the excavation site in Eshtaol on Wednesday, November 27.”

As more and more archaeological finds are unearthed in and around Jerusalem in particular and Israel in general imagine the loss to human knowledge and understanding that will occur if the careless actions of our government allow the Iranians to turn Israel into a sheet of glass .

Viking ‘Thing’ Excavated Beneath Parking Lot In Scotland

” A Viking parliamentary site that dates to the 11th century has been found beneath a parking lot in Scotland.

The site, located in the town of Dingwall, Scotland, was dubbed a “Thing” site, referring to its name in antiquity. Like other Thing sites, this one was likely a place where ancient Norsemen gathered to settle legal disputes, uphold laws and make key political decisions.

“It’s a fantastic find, really,” said Oliver J. T. O’Grady, the director of the site’s excavations and an archaeologist who runs an consulting firm called OJT Heritage. “No one’s had dating [information] from a Thing site in Scotland.”

Historians had long wondered whether Dingwall was a site of a Viking parliamentary gathering known as the Thing because the word Dingwall probably originated from the word thingvellir, which means “the field of the assembly.”  “

Glass-Walled Skyscraper Melts Car

20_Fenchurch_Street,_City_of_London

” An under-construction skyscraper in London has unintentionally become a solar death ray that melted a car.

The 37-storey building, officially named 20 Fenchurch Street, is nicknamed the Walkie Talkie or the Pint because of its planned shape, as shown above in an artist impression. As well as bulging at the sides, it has a concave face, shown front in the image.

Unfortunately that creates a problem, as discovered by Jaguar owner Martin Lindsay who parked opposite the building and returned to discover that not only had the Jaguar badge melted, but both the wing mirror and panels on the car had warped.

It soon became clear that the concave glass face of the building had reflected the rays of the sun, creating a true hotspot at ground level that’s reportedly been measured at 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). The local authority has now blocked off three parking spots in the street while the issue is investigated.”

Thomas Dishaw:

” If you haven’t noticed there has been a lot of talk regarding the power grid lately.  Highly ranked Government officials continue to go on record warning us that we are in imminent danger of a looming strike on the grid.

Since the Government likes to “keep us safe “, they are coincidentally preparing a massive drill emulating an attack on the power grid.

Off The Grid News reports the drill will take place November 13-14:

An electrical grid joint drill simulation is being planned in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Thousands of utility workers, FBI agents, anti-terrorism experts, governmental agencies, and more than 150 private businesses are involved in the November power grid drill.

The downed power grid simulation will reportedly focus on both physical and cyber attacks. The antiquated electrical system in the United States has been one of the most neglected pieces of integral infrastructure.”

Albany At It’s Finest

” Top officials with the state Office of General Services showed us one of the doors we were asking about.

It turns out it’s a ten thousand dollar door.

The state paid for seven of them during the recent multi-year renovation and restoration at the State Capitol.

We move forward to February of this year. Heather and two top officials gave us a rather extensive tour of the 74 million dollar, 13 year project.

We still wanted to hear about the doors. Groll told us the projects weren’t bid in that detail and that expenses weren’t broken out by individual door.

After the story aired an engineer who requested we not reveal his name for fear of retribution wrote that “OGS lied to you”.

He explained that the state requires a BDC-187 Detailed Estimate for every single item and that the contractor will not get paid until the estimate is approved.

” Proposed in 2007, the Tour de Verre would have been, said some critics, the most exciting building in New York in a generation. Designed for the lot adjacent to MoMA, the 82-story tower—faceted and shimmering with a mirage-like effect—would have housed additional exhibition space as well as a hotel. The proposal died a slow death amid a fanfare of urban bureaucracy.”
