What We Saw At NYC’s Fast Food Strike

Published on Dec 6, 2013

” Yesterday, Naomi Brockwell and I attended a demonstration demanding that fast-food restaurants boost their minimum wage to $15 per hour, or a little more than double the current federal minimum wage. The strike, which was led by a group called Fast Food Forward that’s affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), was one of more than a 100 similar demonstrations held in cities across the country.

The New York demonstration had about 150 people, but the number of actual fast food employees participating in the strike was small. It was business as usual at every restaurant we dropped by yesterday morning and, at a McDonald’s restaurant on 23rd Street and Madison Avenue in Manhattan, employees behind the counter said they had heard nothing about a strike.

We caught up with the protesters in front of a Wendy’s in downtown Brooklyn, where the crowd consisted of union organizers, fast-food workers, and their sympathizers. An estimated one-third of the demonstrators were fast-food employees, meaning that less than one-tenth of 1 percent of New York City’s 57,000 fast-food workforce participated in the strike.

The group was traveling from one fast-food restaurant to another, before winding up at Foley Square in Manhattan around 1pm.

Multiple strikers told us they had received compensation through a union strike fund to appear, but declined to say the amount they were paid.

Artificially doubling wages to $15 an hour would change many things in the fast food industry, including the easy path it provides for low-skilled employees to break into the labor market. Substantially higher wages would mean that existing employees would be less apt to look for other positions, and senior staffers would be more inclined to hog shift hours. Franchisees would likely move more aggressively to replace human service workers with automated cash registers, which is already happening in European McDonald’s. Evidence of how artificially boosting wages destroys opportunities for entry level workers was best documented in a 2006 study by economists David Neumark and William Wascher, which was updated in 2013.

In interviews, several striking workers described how it had been relatively easy for them to get a job in fast-food service. Shenita Simon, who works as a shift supervisor at KFC, told us that she doesn’t know where else she would have been able to find a position, because fast food is the only industry that “will allow you to have minimum education.” Isaac Wallace, a Burger King employee, described how he was able to get his job immediately after moving to New York from Jamaica by simply walking into a Burger King in Brooklyn and approaching the manager.

Once the strike moved to Foley Square, organizers from Fast Food Forward began obstructing our efforts to talk with protesters.

Labor Relations Board OKs Unions Paying People To Protest Walmart

” National Labor Relations Board lawyers okayed a major union’s practice of paying people to protest against Walmart in a legal memorandum earlier this month. The federal labor law enforcement agency said the practice of paying workers $50 apiece to join protests “did not constitute unlawful … coercion of employees.”

In a Nov. 15 memorandum from the NLRB’s general counsel office regarding the so-called “Black Friday” protests staged by United Food and Commercial Workers against the nonunion retailer last year, the NLRB lawyers determined that the UFCW’s offer of $50 gift cards to anyone who showed up to protest “was a non-excessive strike benefit.”

The lawyers said there was “no evidence to indicate that the gift card was meant to buy support for OUR Walmart” since the card was available not just to the retailer’s employees but to anyone who showed up at the unions’ protests.”

As usual the astroturf party has to bribe their minions to get them to show up .

” What the protests seem to be largely lacking, though, are actual Walmart employees. At events across the country last year, local media struggled to find anyone on the picket lines who also worked at the store. Some events had none at all.”

As we said … The Astroturf Party

” Texas Congressman Steve Stockman has blown the whistle on President Obama’s anti-gun Twitter campaign. Stockman says that hardly any of Obama’s anti-gun tweets come from actual human beings, while most are computer-generated spam:

“Obama’s anti-gun campaign is a fraud,” Stockman said. …

Stockman said that in response to Obama’s call for people to tweet their congressman in support of gun control legislation, he received just 16 tweets. But he said all of these messages were identical, and that a closer look at them revealed that only six were from real people.”

Stacy McCain is also on top of this …

” “The other 10 are fake, computer-generated spambots,” his office said in a press release. As evidence, he said these 10 tweets use default graphics and names, and have not engaged in any interaction with other people. Two of the tweets were sent at nearly the same time, and both follow just one person: Brad Schenck, Obama’s former digital strategist.

A huge hat-tip to @DefendWallSt, who spotted the fake Twitter accounts on the #DemandAVote hashtag Saturday. Friends pointed it out to me, soI blogged about it, and apparently someone in Congressman Stockman’s office was actually paying attention.

National Review reports that Republican Reps. Michael Grimm and Adam Kinzinger have also been “flooded” with messages from the Obama anti-gun spambot campaign.”

As is The Heritage Foundation

Spambot Twit

” In a statement, Stockman called Obama’s anti-gun campaign a “fraud” and demanded the White House explain itself.

“To what extent is the White House involved in this attempt to defraud Congress?” he said.

Stockman was one of 16 Members of Congress who received the tweets, according to Fox News.

Creating a false narrative to boost support for a policy position doesn’t contribute to a fair and balanced debate – it only harms the conversation about a serious issue like gun control.

The hashtag campaign was started by Obama’s new grassroots organizing platform, Organizing for Action – a product of Obama for America, his electoral campaign. The organization only launched in January 2013, but if this kind of dishonest “action” is how they plan to organize support for the President’s policies, they won’t get far with conservative watchdogs eyeballing their every move.”

“Documents and a whistle-blower affidavit obtained by The Daily Caller charge that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Illinois Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., and Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., participated in an unethical — and possibly illegal — effort to force 76 employees of an Illinois state agency to engage in political activity
on the taxpayers’ dime.”

#StopRush Astroturf Proof

So some democrat with a shred of decency remaining decided to expose what was already surmised by thoise of us paying attention to the progressive’s methods . All roads lead to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue .

Considering the idolization and accolades afforded Woodward and Bernstein for their coverage of Watergate , which is  insignificant scandal-wise as compared to “Fast & Furious” , if the mainstream media was not so biased toward the Obama administration this period in American political history would seem to offer a wealth of opportunities for Pulitzer prizes and journalistic achievement .

The examples of lying , deceit , cronyism , and outright criminal behavior are boundless these days . Virtually every scheme , protest , boycott or cry of victimization can have it’s roots traced back to Obama and his minions at MediaMatters .

“I noted the other day the odd attack by various StopRush activists on one of their own, #StopRush turns on itself, devolves into name calling, accusations.

Now the details are coming out, and it turns out that StopRush was infiltrated by a Blue Dog type Democrat who didn’t like their online tactics.  That person, who was the subject of the attacks in the post above, has released various audio recordings and other evidence showing how one of the organizers of StopRush (who uses the Twitter name @Shoq) claimed to have close ties to Organizing for America and Van Jones.”

Not really a surprise to anyone , is it ?

” When desperation sets in, true colors come out. As Democrats try not to completely lose hold of their once astounding leads across politics from just four years ago, their efforts are as see-through as the Hawaiian waters the Obama family gets to see during their taxpayer funded vacations.

At multiple Mitt Romney rallies Tuesday in Michigan, several protestors were allegedly paid to protest. One Obama campaign official and two of the protesters (all anonymous) confirmed the allegations to Buzzfeed reporters.”

The intimidation spreads like a cancer . Will Obama import hecklers into the coming debates ? Or will some Black Panthers be at the entrance to screen the audience ?

“Outside, meanwhile, some brick row houses across from the school were boarded up. Police had cordoned off a full city block to protect Romney and his entourage. Residents, some of them organized by Obama’s campaign, stood on their porches and gathered at a sidewalk corner to shout angrily at Romney. Some held signs saying, “We are the 99%.” One man’s placard trumpeted an often-referenced Romney gaffe: “I am not concerned about the very poor.” “

About as genuine as Sandra Fluke’s need for taxpayer-subsidized birth control , the orchestrated rage machine that serves Obama couldn’t survive without the water-carrying media flacks .

“I’m not sure which is more offensive: the President of the United States community organizing private citizens to artificially undermine an opponent’s visit to an inner-city school with Occupy Wall Street sloganeering, or the Washington Post’ s Philip Rucker not only burying this news but also allowing themselves to be willingly duped into covering the story in the way the Obama campaign desired . “

I am deeply disappointed in Amazon and will be taking down their link on my site along with sending them a note regarding my feelings about their spineless cave to the thugs on the Left . Intimidation is all they have remaining .

“At their shareholder meeting today in Seattle, Amazon announced that they are dropping their affiliation with the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).”
