… And Liking What They See

” Early in American Sniper, the title character, Chris Kyle, stares through his crosshairs at a woman and child who may be preparing an attack on American troops. Even when the woman hands the boy an RPG, Kyle waits to pull the trigger. In one particular theater, with “the entire audience on the edge of their seats,” patrons start screaming, encouraging Kyle to “Just shoot him!

Where was this theater? Somewhere near a U.S. military base, maybe? Or perhaps in the heart of a red state? Actually, this packed theater, “full and rowdy,” is in the Mansour Mall, in Baghdad.

As everybody knows, Clint Eastwood’s film has been a box-office smash, praised for its directing and its performances, and attacked as a work of bloodthirsty, racist, militarist propaganda. One of the few things about the film that has received little attention is that it has been playing well in the Middle East, including in Iraq.

A piece at Global Post addresses audience reaction at one upscale Baghdad theater, though the article is dependent on a small handful of interviews. The story is credited to “Susannah George in Beirut and a journalist in Baghdad.”

The film has also been drawing big crowds in Lebanon. Edited versions have opened in several Gulf states, with cuts to a scene involving the Quran. Jordanian censors originally rejected the film outright, though distributors plan to submit a re-edited version. “

‘Guardians’ Leads In Slowest Movie Weekend Since 2001

Box office

” Ticket sales for all movies were $65 million, the weakest total since the weekend that started Sept. 21, 2001, Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, said by telephone yesterday. Sales followed the typical slowdown that occurs after the U.S. Labor Day holiday, he said. Also, there were no new breakout releases.

“ The sky is not falling,” Dergarabedian said. “Summer was down almost 15 percent, so it’s not so surprising that the transition to fall is a little slow.”

“ Guardians of the Galaxy” is the top-grossing film of the year, with $294.6 million in domestic ticket sales. With two other films in 2014’s top five — “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Maleficent,” — Disney ranks second among studios to 21st Century Fox Inc., and is up 6.2 percent for the year, according to Box Office Mojo.”

” Universal reports this morning that Lone Survivor earned an estimated $14.4 million on Friday, putting it on course for one of the best January openings ever.Cloverfield owns the month’s record with $40.1 million back in 2008. Lone Survivor is projected by BoxOffice to bank a strong $38 million. As expected, the flick is playing strong throughout America’s heartland and among military families. Mark Wahlberg continues to expand his box office drawing power as the film is poised to exceed the debuts of Act of Valor ($24.5 million) and Zero Dark Thirty‘s expansion one year ago this weekend ($24.4 million). Early word of mouth appears very healthy with 85 percent of more than 32,000 Flixster users anticipating or approving of the film.”
