Ranking Known State Subsidies To Private Businesses

” While corporate welfare, whether in the form of subsidies or bailouts, is more often associated with the federal government, state governments also regularly use generous, targeted subsidy packages to entice corporations to locate within their borders. As these charts show, corporate welfare is a significant problem at the state level, with New York State leading the rest.

This week’s charts use data from the Subsidy Tracker 2.0 dataset compiled by Good Jobs First, a government accountability and smart-growth advocacy group, to display the states (plus the District of Columbia) that disperse the highest amounts and numbers of subsidies, along with the top parent corporations that cumulatively benefit from these subsidies.

Comprehensive data on total state assistance to private businesses have long been hard to access, since the relevant information has been inconsistently scattered among various government reports and websites. The Subsidy Tracker project is an ambitious effort to compile state data on subsidized projects, amounts, beneficiaries, and outcomes in one location. The dataset distinguishes between 11 types of subsidies, including tax credits and rebates, property tax abatements, low-cost loans, infrastructure assistance, and enterprise zones. The dataset is a constantly updated work-in-progress; while it does not yet contain every single state subsidy, it is one of the most comprehensive sources of state subsidies assembled so far. Additionally, the database compilers decided to count sales tax exemptions on business purchases of inputs as a “subsidy.” However, some economists argue that applying sales taxes to input purchases would inefficiently favor vertically integrated firms over firms that purchase inputs from other businesses. Therefore, this kind of sales tax exemption is not a “subsidy,” but an efficient tax policy. Despite these important limitations, the dataset can give us an early glimpse of the rough value of the  subsidies that each state issues. The User Guide provides further details on the methodology.

The first chart displays the states known to have extended cumulative subsidies exceeding $1 billion, according to the dataset. In the top portion, the states are ranked, left to right, from the highest amount of subsidies to the lowest amount of subsidies. In the bottom portion, the equivalent number of deals are displayed for each state.

New York state clearly leads the pack, extending a known 71,759 subsidy deals worth $21.71 billion. The second highest corporate beneficiary in the dataset, Alcoa, received a plum deal from the Empire State in 2007, raking in an astounding $5.6 billion to build an aluminum plant. “

Since Cuomo Won’t Fight Corruption, U.S. Attorney Must

preet-bharara

” In a move that should send chills down the spine of every crooked pol in Albany, hard-charging Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara has resolved to finish the work of the anti-corruption commission that Gov. Cuomo shuttered in an unsavory backroom deal with the Legislature.

Happy hunting to Bharara, who must now do his darndest to salvage a sweeping Capitol fumigation that never should have been abandoned.

Few people put elected thieves behind bars with the prowess of Bharara. It was, in fact, a flurry of indictments from his office early last year that helped prompt Cuomo to demand reform from the Legislature in the first place — and then to create the Moreland Commission on Public Corruption, a supposedly independent investigative panel, when lawmakers refused.

The panel, crucially, was charged not only with probing outright fraud, but with exposing the routine, corrosive abuses of public trust that are standard practice in Albany while not clearly outside blurry legal lines.

But last week, before the panel could finish the job or issue a final report, Cuomo abruptly pulled the plug in exchange for a handful of ethics reforms. Significant as some of those measures were, it was far too high a price to pay.”

It’s good to someone in NY willing to dig into the pervasive corruption that is Albany , even if Cuomo won’t . Godspeed Sir we are sure that you will achieve much success as the NY political class is a target rich environment , and if there is any NY pol that is deserving of intense scrutiny from an outside party it is Sheldon Silver … as the article says , “Happy Hunting”

” The commission had also subpoenaed records of lawmakers’ murky outside income, including upwards of $500,000 that Assembly boss Sheldon Silver collects from a personal injury firm, and at least $250,000 that Senate chief Dean Skelos is paid by a Long Island firm that also happens to lobby the Legislature. “

Kane Defends Decision Not To Prosecute Politicians In Sting Case

AG Kane Ignores Corruption

” Pennsylvania’s Attorney General is defending her decision to drop the case against five Philadelphia Democrats entangled in a sting operation.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane held a press conference Monday. She says despite taped evidence of four representatives and a traffic court judge allegedly pocketing money or gifts from an informant, she won’t prosecute because the investigation was “botched.”

State Reps. Michelle Brownlee, Louise Bishop, Vanessa Brown, Ronald Waters and former Judge Tomasine Tynes allegedly took money and, in one instance a Tiffany bracelet, from an informant seeking favors, but they have not been charged.

The story broke in bold headlines in Sunday’s Philadelphia Inquirer. It revealed an informant, facing criminal charges beginning in 2010 visited the politicians offering cash and the one gift in return for votes or favors.

All of the alleged transactions were recorded.”

Why A Majority Of Americans Remain Opposed To ObamaCare

This timely piece is a much needed reminder of all the underhanded , backroom political shenanigans the democrats had to resort to in order to make Obamacare the “law of the land” . Four years on the criminal behavior of the ruling party is probably not at the forefront of most citizen’s minds but , as the effects of this horrendous usurpation of individual choice begin to be felt everyone should be reminded … endlessly … how we got here in the first place . Republicans Move To Halt ObamaCare ‘Bailout’ For Angry Unions

” Capitol Hill Republicans are trying to stop the Obama administration from offering labor unions a sweetheart deal on ObamaCare, as the White House tries to quell a simmering rebellion from Big Labor over the health care law.

President Obama and White House officials reportedly have called union leaders to try and persuade them to tone down their complaints, pledging an accommodation. The AFL-CIO, though, on Wednesday approved a resolution anyway calling the law “highly disruptive” to union plans.

But reports have surfaced on a plan that would give union workers — and only union workers — subsidies to help pay for health insurance even if they’re covered through their job. The purported “carve-out” could soothe the simmering discontent within Big Labor. The loyal Democratic supporters and early champions of ObamaCare say they have been slighted by the act’s final regulations, which they say is pushing some employees into part-time work and threatens their health insurance plans.

At least three congressional Republicans are trying to stop any effort to give the unions special treatment, which could cost $200 billion over 10 years.”

Sen. Menendez Says He Looks Forward to Vindication

” Sen. Robert Menendez, who has maintained all along that he never paid prostitutes for sex, said he is looking forward to whatever evidence emerges from courts in the Dominican Republic to vindicate him.

A Dominican lawyer on Monday released an affidavit from a 23-year-old woman saying she fabricated a story about Menendez paying her for sex.

“I’ve always said that these are false, they’re smears,” Menendez, D-N.J., told reporters at the Capitol, referring to published reports that he paid prostitutes for sex in the Dominican Republic. “And, so, I look forward to seeing whatever the Dominican courts have that prove what I’ve said all along.” ”

Remember that the prostitution allegations are the ” look , squirrel ” of the Menendez scandal . It’s all about the port deal , access and corruption … not hookers .

Sheriff Lee Baca and the Gun-Gift Connection

” The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department is known in gun-rights circles for being stingy with concealed-weapons permits. Sheriff Lee Baca has total discretion over who is allowed to get a permit, and he hasn’t given out many.

As of May 2012, only 341 people had been granted them, according to sheriff’s records. Compare that with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, which had 1,754 permit holders in 2011, despite a population of just 2 million people to L.A.’s 10 million. The Kern County Sheriff granted even more, with 3,564 permit holders in a population of 800,000 people.

In L.A. County, records show, most of the permits go to judges and reserve deputies. But there is another group that seems to have better luck than most in obtaining permits: friends of Lee Baca. Those who’ve given the sheriff gifts or donated to his campaign are disproportionately represented on the roster of permit holders.

Michel had not looked in depth at L.A. County’s practices, but the Weekly did. Last year, the Weekly filed a public records request for all 341 active concealed-weapons permits granted by the Sheriff’s Department — as well as a list of the 123 people who applied for concealed weapons over an 18-month period but were denied. (You can see the complete list of permit holders we obtained from the Sheriff’s Department here.)

Those lists contain many of the same names that appear on Baca’s gift reports and contribution records.

In fact, more than two dozen people who have given gifts or campaign contributions to the sheriff also have gun permits. More than one out of every 10 permits issued to civilians went to people on Baca’s gift list. The permit holders include Michael R. Yamaki, an attorney and reserve deputy who is among Baca’s best friends, as well as several people who attended Baca’s 1999 wedding.”

Reid Linked To $600,000 Bribery Scandal

Harry Reid The Bird

” Embattled St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson says new Utah Attorney General John Swallow helped broker a deal in 2010 in which Johnson believed he was to pay Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid $600,000 to make a federal investigation into Johnson’s company go away . ”

As TownHall Says :

” Certainly the allegations could be false, but it’s worth noting this isn’t the first time Reid’s name has come up in connection with some pretty shady propositions.  Remember the lucrative, underpriced land deal?  Or the green energy conflict? There’s so much there, pithily summed up by Investors Business Daily as follows:

. . .shadowy years he ran the Nevada Gaming Commission, through his public embarrassment over the Los Angeles Times investigation into his son and son-in-law’s Washington lobbying activities, the ethics investigation into the free tickets Reid happily accepted to boxing matches and the successful land development deal that ended up netting Reid $1 million when he sold it, in an amazing coincidence, to a friend and it became a shopping center. “

But These Are Not The First Allegations Of Wrongdoing Leveled Against “Dirty Harry”

” A new report released today by the group 1001 Reasons to Vote Against Harry Reid shows that Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) has either steered or is attempting to steer a total of $3,360,000 in earmarked Defense Department contracts to a campaign contributor, despite President Obama’s direct opposition to the project.

The company on the receiving end of the funds, Arcata Associates, is a small privately-held defense contractor headquartered in Las Vegas, NV. The first earmark, already signed into law, occurred in FY2010 and was worth $1,360,000. The second, still under consideration, is slated to come during FY2011 and would cost $2,000,000. Both allocations use the Senate Defense Appropriations Bill. “

And How Does Someone Who Has Collected A Taxpayer Funded Salary For Over 40 Years Amass A Net Worth Of Between 4 and 6 Million Dollars

” Right now, as Senate Majority Leader, Reid earns $193,400.00 per year – a back-bencher earns $174,000.00.

Reid has been earning that 193 grand for a few years, but when he first entered the Senate in 1987, I think the Senate salary was about $125,000.00 per year. In order to build up $4.6 million dollars over the past 43 years, Reid would have had to sock aside – out of various government salaries – nearly $107,000.00 per year.

Does anyone want to believe that Reid has done this? That he has saved his government-salary pennies (including for all those years when he made far less than even $107,000.00 per year) and built up his fortune just out of the money we know he’s been earning since he entered public office? And what if Reid’s fortune is actually closer to the higher estimate of $6.3 million?

It’s just not credible that Reid has done this just out of his government salary. The man has raised 5 kids, through college. His various government salaries were enough to live on but how, with all the expenses, did Reid build up so much money? What did he do? How did he do it?

How does a man who’s “product” is legislation make so much money that he can build up more than four and a half million dollars of net worth? ”

Can You Save Over Half Of Your Annual Salary Every Year ? For 43 Consecutive Years ?

” Its small wonder that Reid believes in the power of government to make things good. They’ve certainly made things good for him. He’s risen from the son of a hard-rock miner to a fabulously wealthy Senate Majority Leader. Being in government, for Reid, has been like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. He hasn’t had to work for money, but he’s managed to acquire quite a lot of it.

But is this what we want? Do we want people who enter politics poor and leave it very rich? Nothing wrong with a poor man being in government. Nothing wrong with being a rich man in government. But to start poor and end rich while never doing anything in the private sector is a clear indicator of trading on one’s position.

And this is why Reid wants so desperately to remain in power – because it’s all he’s got.

The whole of Reid’s position in life has been built on his government office. Wealth, power and prestige, for Reid, are dependent upon his remaining in office. To lose office is to lose the ability to, say, build up another four million dollars. It’s not like Reid has any marketable skills for the private sector – even his skill as a lawyer is probably rusty as he hasn’t done any real legal practice since the 1960′s. ”

In Addition To Illegal Financial Gain There Have Also Been Numerous Allegations Of Election Fraud

” Votes without voters – the notion seems like something from “The Twilight Zone.” Yet this outcome, the result of a mysterious computer glitch, may have helped re-elect Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid over his Republican challenger, Sharron Angle, last week by a 50.2%-44.6% margin. Actually, the “mystery” is very likely the doing of a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which nationwide provides votes, money and muscle for the Democratic Party. Critics are charging thatvoting machines throughout Clark County (Las Vegas), where about three-fourths of Nevada’s population resides, were rigged to place check marks next to Reid’s name before a person even had voted. County officials insist that no tampering occurred. But the possibility can’t be dismissed, especially given that one of Reid’s sons is county commission chairman. “

Update : How Could We Have Forgotten Those Unaddressed Rumors Of Pederasty

“Obama’s proposal is the opposite of fair, making taxpayers pony up for a $6 billion election gimmick that they don’t benefit from. Only 68% of high school graduates are enrolled in colleges or universities. How is it fair to make the 32% who are not in college pay for the student loans of those who are? How is it fair to have the rest of the approximately 140 million taxpayers and those students
who never had to have college loans but who paid for their own tuition, pay for today’s college students? Is it fair to add more debt to the every taxpayer’s share of the $30,000 in new debt that President Obama has already added just so that he can
buy a few more votes? None of this
is fair, it’s the opposite of fair.”

Gee , you say the money went to who ? It was and is ALWAYS about cronyism and payback . Buying support with OPM is what progressivism is all about .
