Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic On Punk, Politics, & Why He Dumped The Dems

Published on Jun 19, 2014

” Krist Novoselic is best known as the co-founder and bassist of Nirvana, one of the most influential music groups of the past quarter century. The release of the band’s albums Bleach, Nevermind, and In Utero in the late 1980s and early ’90s not only mainstreamed what became known as grunge but helped to forever end what was once known as the mainstream. After Nirvana, it seems there is only alternative music and alternative culture, a transformation that is both liberating and anxiety-producing.

Born in 1965 in Compton, California, but raised in Aberdeen, Washington, Novoselic (pronounced know-voe-selitch) embodies the forces Nirvana helped to unleash. Since the 1994 suicide of band leader Kurt Cobain, Novoselic has continued to play with various groups, including a stint with the legendary post-punk band Flipper and sporadic collaborations with former Nirvana bandmate Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. But the bass player is also pushing to create an alternative approach to electoral politics.

In 2004, Novoselic published Of Grunge and Government: Let’s Fix This Broken Democracy, and these days he’s chairman of FairVote, a nonprofit that lobbies for electoral reform such as instant runoffs and proportional voting. After serving as chairman of his county Democratic committee for several years and supporting Barack Obama early on, he has broken with the Democratic Party, in part because “it’s a top-down structure” impervious to change from the grassroots.

Like Nirvana’s music, Novoselic’s politics cannot be easily categorized: He has donated money to Ron Paul’s campaign and he speaks in favor of the liberal-loathed Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which ended limits on non-coordinated political spending by corporations in federal elections. He’s active in his local chapter of the fraternal farmer’s organization, the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, proving you can go from grunge to Grange.

Novoselic recently sat down with Reason TV’s Nick Gillespie to discuss FairVote (4:18), gerrymandering (8:34), how he self-describes politically (11:30), the Grange (12:23), decentralization in the punk rock world (14:43), his issues with Democrats (20:00), why Republicans should embrace anarchy (22:08), why he fled the anti-World Trade Organization demonstration in Seattle (27:51), living in Croatia in 1980 (30:33), the early days of Nirvana (34:32), playing Germany just days after the Berlin Wall fell (37:46), Kurt Cobain as an individual vs. as an icon (43:20), drug legalization (45:57), going to college online (47:50), why he owns guns (51:31), his musical guilty pleasure (55:34), and more.

Interview by Gillespie; produced by Meredith Bragg. About one hour.

FEC Chair Warns That Conservative Media Like Drudge Report And Sean Hannity Face Regulation — Like PACs

” Government officials, reacting to the growing voice of conservative news outlets, especially on the internet, are angling to curtail the media’s exemption from federal election laws governing political organizations, a potentially chilling intervention that the chairman of the Federal Election Commission is vowing to fight.

“ I think that there are impulses in the government every day to second guess and look into the editorial decisions of conservative publishers,” warned Federal Election Commission Chairman Lee E. Goodman in an interview.

“ The right has begun to break the left’s media monopoly, particularly through new media outlets like the internet, and I sense that some on the left are starting to rethink the breadth of the media exemption and internet communications,” he added.

Noting the success of sites like the Drudge Report, Goodman said that protecting conservative media, especially those on the internet, “matters to me because I see the future going to the democratization of media largely through the internet. They can compete with the big boys now, and I have seen storm clouds that the second you start to regulate them, there is at least the possibility or indeed proclivity for selective enforcement, so we need to keep the media free and the internet free.” “

The Obama administration plans to arbitrarily designate “conservative” alternate media sources as “political organizations” and thus subject them to increased regulation not forced upon those “unbiased , apolitical news sources” such as MSNBC , NY Times , et al .

Oh , the power of the State … They are quaking in their boots and must do something , anything , to maintain their stranglehold on the dissemination of the “truth” . Sounds like the USSR to us .

Pelosi’s Call to Change the Constitution

” Arguing it would restore democracy, two top House Democrats pushed for sweeping legislation to reverse the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Citizens United speech case, including a constitutional amendment limiting campaign contributions and instituting a taxpayer-financing system.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) published an op-ed in The Washington Post Wednesday advocating for the Government by the People Act on the day it was being introduced in the House.

“ We must disclose the sources of the money in our campaigns, amend the Constitution to reverse the grievous error of the Citizens United decision, reform our broken campaign finance system and empower citizens everywhere to exercise their right to vote,” Pelosi and Sarbanes wrote.”

Having searched Thomas , and numerous government websites we could not presently locate a copy of the text of the bill but we did find a list of co-sponsors that reads as a typical list of enemies of the Tea Party and liberty :

” As of 02/06/2014 text has not been received for H.R.20 – To reform the financing of Congressional elections by broadening participation by small dollar donors, and for other purposes.

Bills are generally sent to the Library of Congress from GPO, the Government Printing Office, a day or two after they are introduced on the floor of the House or Senate. Delays can occur when there are a large number of bills to prepare or when a very large bill has to be printed.”

Despite the lack of available text of the bill the usual suspects have all jumped on the bandwagon in support of this legislative attempt to shut down the Tea Party and any attendant grass roots citizens organizations . Below are what a few of the “progressive” liberal organizations have to say in support of Pelosi/Sarbanes HR 20 :

Dēmos Praises Introduction of The Government By the People Act

US PIRG Applauds the Introduction of the Government by the People Act

The PCCC is proud to endorse the Government #ByThePeople

PFAW Applauds Introduction of Government By the PeopleAct …

The Examiner offers a very telling piece on the motives behind this latest attempt by the “progressives” to shut down free speech for the proponents of limited government :

” Although the “Government by the People Act” innocently claims to want to get big money out of politics, the real goal is to smash the Tea Party (as well as pro-Israel, pro-life, and other similar groups collectively referred to as the “Tea Party.”)

This legislation is the direct result of a secretive, well-financed progressive plot hatched shortly after President Obama’s re-election in 2012.

Sound like a conspiracy? It is.

The meeting was described by Andy Kroll of Mother Jones, who wrote that “three dozen of the most powerful groups in liberal politics met [for an ‘invite-only and off-the-record’ meeting] at the headquarters of the National Education Association (NEA).” During the meeting, they pledged “millions of dollars” to actively work on three specific goals, one of which was “getting big money out of politics.” “

Imagine the chutzpah of the NEA and other unions demanding to get the “big money” out of politics.

” The fear that conservative groups would have access to funds typically granted to progressive groups and unions was too much to bear. In fact, the Citizens United ruling came at right around the time that the Internal Revenue Service started targeting conservative groups.

As revealed by Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post,

“The targeting of [conservative] groups began in early 2010, after the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC was announced on Jan. 21.”

Many of the same politicians and activist groups involved in the Democracy Initiative pressured the IRS to scrutinize the Tea Party before Lois Lerner “spontaneously” apologized for the targeting in May, 2013.

A detailed history of the IRS targeting can be found at Tavern Keepers.”

These legislative and lobbying efforts on the part of the elite of the “progressive” left to shut down the Tea Party and like minded citizens groups speaks volumes as to the effectiveness of such organizations and gives evidence of just how important to the cause of liberty , freedom and limited government they are .

Inside The Kochs’ Reid Brush Back

” Charles and David Koch raised eyebrows in D.C. last week with an aggressive push back of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid after the Nevada Democrat delivered the kind of bare-knuckle attack on the billionaire brothers that has become commonplace by top Democrats in the Citizens United era.

” All Americans should be deeply concerned when officials use their elected office, particularly the office of the Senate Majority Leader, to stifle First Amendment rights of free speech and association,” Philip Ellender, a top official at Koch Industries, told Breitbart News. Ellender also released a sharply-worded letter taking Reid to task.

Sources close to the issue say the brush back was mostly motivated by sincere outrage. “Harry Reid, on the Senate floor – the majority leader – going after private citizens?” asks a top Koch ally incredulously, comparing it to the Internal Revenue Services’ targeting of conservative activists.”

Citizens United Joins Vitter Push Against Health Benefits

For Congress, Staff

” Sen. David Vitter took his campaign against federal employer-provided health benefits to a new level on Monday night.

The Louisiana Republican appeared on the Fox News program “Hannity” along with David Bossie of the conservative group Citizens United to launch a new advertising effort in favor of the Vitter amendment that includes a fundraising effort for Citizens United.

“We’re really excited about this, being able to take it to the American people so that they can rise up and say look, enough is enough. Congress, you can’t pass a law that by the way is so bad it can’t be rolled out in a competent way for anyone but themselves,” Bossie said. “That’s just plain wrong.” “

Here is a radical idea … how about we designate all politicians as self-employed , since it isn’t supposed to be a career choice anyway , and cease providing anything to our elected officials other than a salary and a 1099 form at the end of the year ?

Let them shop around for their own health insurance and invest in their own retirement funds . Why should the taxpayers foot the bill for such largesse ? With perqs like they have now it’s no wonder they treat the jobs like sinecures. We’ve only ourselves to blame is we allow this madness to continue .

Why Do The Koch Brothers Get All The Sunshine?

” Here’s a couple of data points that bear serious thought this week by transparency advocates celebrating Sunshine Week and by everybody else who cares about protecting and preserving a free and independent press:

1,130 – Number of results for search term “Koch Brothers” on The New York Times web site.

64 – Number of results for search term “The Tides Foundation” on The New York Times web site.

It’s equally certain that few reading this post know anything at all about the San Francisco-based Tides Foundation, even though its roots go deep into the radical student movement of the 1960s and it has helped fund or startup virtually every significant liberal, progressive and radical cause in the years since.

Similar results appear from the same searches on The Washington Post web site, which turns up 277 links to the Koch Brothers and 11 for Tides. And on the New Yorker web site, Koch Brothers generated 35 links and none for Tides.

The contrast was even more dramatic on the Common Cause site, where the Koch Brothers were linked 4,560 times versus one for Tides.

NY Times Is The Enemy Of Your Free Speech

” James Taranto has a great column about how all the left-wing vitriol over the Citizens United case really is just an attempt to maintain the once monopoly power of left-wing corporations over political speech.

News flash — The New York Times is a corporation which protects its electioneering for liberal causes under the banner of press freedom, while seeking to deny other corporations similar rights.

The Privilege to Speak (via Instapundit):

A corporate division has once again exercised its First Amendment rights to argue that corporations don’t have First Amendment rights. This time, however, the New York Times Co. claims to have discovered a loophole that protects its First Amendment rights. “

“If Democrats were to take control of the House of Representatives after the November elections, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her party would “amend the [U.S.] Constitution” on the “very first day” to overturn the Supreme Court’s “Citizens United” decision.

President Obama said he supports a constitutional amendment to reverse the ruling and keep undisclosed corporate contributions out of elections.

“On the very first day we would have a jobs bill. We would have a jobs bill, much of it would contain what President Obama has in the American Jobs Act. It would be as simple as A-B-C. Make it in America. Build America’s infrastructure. See developed growth from the community. And that means education of our children, the police and fire safety of our neighborhoods, that sense of community and fairness,” Pelosi said during her weekly press briefing Thursday on Capitol Hill.”

“The Hope and the Change”

“Citizens United Obama film to air on TV”

“Citizens United has struck a deal with a dozen television stations to run its hour-long film featuring voters disaffected with President Barack Obama, sending the Republican critique of the incumbent into tens of millions of homes in the lead-up to Election Day, the group’s officials told POLITICO.

The Hope and the Change” directed by Stephen Bannon, who made the Sarah Palin movie “The Undefeated,” was first unveiled last month and it aired during the Republican National Convention in Tampa.”

News Busters :

“Over the previous four episodes, Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom has become the liberal media’s Sunday night darling. So, after the July 15th offering, which featured fictional news anchor Will MacAvoy comparing Tea Party members to sex offenders, a little conservative-bashing was expected. The July 22 episode did not disappoint, with the team at “Atlantic Cable News” delving into the Citizen’s United Supreme Court case and effectively accusing Clarence Thomas of bribery. “

This sort of programming , which is predominant in the prime time schedule should be counted as in kind contributions to the democratic party .
