” I heard the “leader of the free world” on the radio this morning speaking from the White House on Russia’s annexation of the Crimea. President Obama’s big thought was about the “choices that the Russian government has made”. It was delivered in the condescending tone of a grade-school guidance counselor lecturing Little Vladdy on the “bad choices” he kept making, and what’s more “choices that have been rejected by…” Stand well back! “…the international community”.

Other than that, the President announced he was imposing “sanctions” for more individuals in the Russian government thinking of visiting Disneyland or opening a savings account with the First National Bank of Dead Cactus Junction. If you’re one of those so named and your wife’s hassling you for a weekend of shopping on Madison Avenue or Rodeo Drive, tough: Obama’s put you on the No-Shop list. For anybody in the Kremlin who still bothers watching US government press conferences, the only real danger from American “pressure” is that you may die laughing.

Daniel Henninger begins his Wall Street Journal column this week as follows:

By the time the second World Trade Center tower collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001, the whole world was watching it. We may assume that Vladimir Putin was watching. Mr. Putin, a quick calculator of political realities, would see that someone was going to get hit for this, and hit hard.

He was right of course. The Bush presidency became a war presidency that day, and it pounded and pursued the Islamic fundamentalists of al Qaeda without let-up or apology.

During that time, it was reported that Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer in East Germany, deeply regretted the fall of the Soviet Union’s empire and despised the Americans who caused it to fall. But no one cared what Mr. Putin thought then.

That’s true. “

Russian Deputy PM Laughs At Obama’s Sanctions

Russians Laugh At Obama

” Russia’s deputy prime minister laughed off President Obama’s sanction against him today  asking “Comrade @BarackObama” if “some prankster” came up with the list.

The Obama administration hit 11 Russian and Ukrainian officials with sanctions today as punishment for Russia’s support of Crimea’s referendum. Among them: aides to President Vladimir Putin, a top government official, senior lawmakers, Crimean officials, the ousted president of Ukraine, and a Ukrainian politician and businessman allegedly tied to violence against protesters in Kiev.

It remains to be seen whether the sanctions will dissuade Russia from annexing Crimea, but one an early clue that they will not be effective came just hours later when President Putin signed a decree recognizing Crimea as an independent state, perhaps an early step towards annexation.

U.S. official have warned of additional sanctions for Russian action, hoping it will deter Russia from any further aggression towards Ukraine, but it didn’t appear to upset the often outspoke Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.”

Russia Says Intercepted US Drone Over Crimea: Arms Group

” A United States surveillance drone has been intercepted above the Ukranian region of Crimea, a Russian state arms and technology group said Friday.

” The drone was flying at about 4,000 metres (12,000 feet) and was virtually invisible from the ground. It was possible to break the link with US operators with complex radio-electronic” technology, said Rostec in a statement.

The drone fell “almost intact into the hands of self-defence forces” added Rostec, which said it had manufactured the equipment used to down the aircraft, but did not specify who was operating it.

” Judging by its identification number, UAV MQ-5B belonged to the 66th American Reconnaissance Brigade, based in Bavaria,” Rostec said on its website, which also carried a picture of what it said was the captured drone.”

Russia tightens grip on Crimea as markets tumble

” Russia cemented its control of the flashpoint Crimean peninsula without firing a shot as markets plunged on Monday and world leaders held a series of crisis talks over the worst standoff between Moscow and the West since the Cold War.

The price of oil surged on fears of an all-out conflict as Russia looked set to send troops into eastern parts of Ukraine, an area with close ties to Russia that the Kremlin has vowed to protect from “ultranationalist forces”.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague opened talks with Ukraine’s Western-backed but untested interim leaders a day after the world’s top industrialised powers threatened to strip Russia of its coveted seat at the Group of Eight for menacing its ex-Soviet neighbour.

Germany offered a rare glimmer of hope by announcing that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed in telephone talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel late Sunday to set up a contact group on Ukraine.

Western allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation also said they wanted to send international observers to Ukraine while engaging Moscow in direct talks.”

Hundreds Of Gunmen Surround Ukraine Military Base

” Hundreds of armed men in trucks and armored vehicles surrounded a Ukrainian military base Sunday in Crimea, blocking its soldiers from leaving. The outnumbered Ukrainians placed a tank at the base’s gate, leaving the two sides in a tense standoff.

In Kiev, Ukraine’s new prime minister urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to pull back his military, warning that “we are on the brink of disaster.”

Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk spoke a day after Russian forces took over the strategic Black Sea peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine without firing a shot.

” There was no reason for the Russian Federation to invade Ukraine,” Yatsenyuk said after a closed session of his new parliament in Kiev.”

Arrest Warrants Issued For Yanukovych, Other Former Ukraine Officials On Suspicion Of Mass Murder

” Former President Viktor Yanukovych is wanted for “mass killings of civilians,” reported acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov on his Facebook page on the morning of Feb. 24.

Avakov, who is now the nation’s top cop, said that arrest warrants have been issued for Yanukovych and “other (former) government officials.” He did not name the other former officials wanted by police.

Avakov also didn’t specify which killings, but it is presumed that the investigation centers on whether Yanukovych hired snipers or ordered riot police to shoot EuroMaidan demonstrators in January and February.

Nearly 100 civilians have been killed in the demonstrations, including at least 75 people from Feb. 18-20, triggering Yanukovych’s flight from Kyiv and subsequent impeachment from office by parliament on Feb. 22.”

Lot’s more reporting at the Kyiv Post and in other news the people have opened up Yanukovych’s dacha in the Crimea and posted a video hinting at the ex-president’s extravagant life style …

Dolphins Armed With Guns Escape Ukrainian Military Compound

” Dolphins armed with guns allegedly escaped from a Ukrainian Navy staging area and are now roaming the Black Sea off the coast of Crimea.

The marine mammals were said to be part of a revived Cold War-era program where dolphins are trained for military use such as fighting and killing frogmen-saboteurs, searching for mines, and scouting and even destroying enemy battleships, according to a Russian news agency.

Dolphins Armed with Pistols

” Sounds like something out of a bad James Bond movie. The Ukrainian navy is training captive dolphins to attack enemy swimmers. According to RIA Novosti:

The killer-dolphins will be trained to attack enemy combat swimmers using special knives or pistols fixed to their heads, the source said. “We are now planning training exercises for counter-combat swimmer tasks in order to defend ships in port and on raids,” he said.”

There are all manner of rumors about how dolphins are or have been employed by the Navy. They include:

  • Training dolphins to pull face masks off of divers and force them to the surface.
  • Arming them with .45 caliber bang sticks.
  • Arming them with large hypodermic syringes loaded with CO2 gas that would cause an enemy diver to explode.

… as well as having them attach mines to enemy ships.

There are also reports, like this one from the BBC, that some dolphins from the Soviet era have been sold to Iran.”

And Here :

Heavily Armed Sex Crazed Dolphins On Rampage In Black Sea

” Worrying news today for any Register readers who may be in the neighbourhood of the Black Sea, as news has emerged that three elite Ukrainian navy killer dolphins, possibly armed with deadly weapons attached to their heads, have gone absent without leave in the region, apparently intent on nookie.

As all habitués of these pages will know, the Ukrainian navy possesses one of just two military dolphin formations worldwide (the other belongs to the US navy), having inherited it during the division of the former Soviet Black Sea fleet. Since the end of the Cold War, the combat cetaceans had mostly been employed on peaceful duties: but last year news emerged that the battle-bottlenoses would be trained up once more in warlike missions such as the laying or hunting of mines – or even attacking enemy frogmen using “knives or pistols” attached to their heads.”
