‘American Sniper’: Movie Review

” The best movies are ever-shifting, intelligent and open-hearted enough to expand alongside an audience. “American Sniper,” Clint Eastwood’s harrowing meditation on war, is built on this foundation of uncommon compassion.

Helping Eastwood carry out his tricky mission is an outstanding performance by Bradley Cooper, who plays Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

An easygoing Texas rodeo rider, Kyle impulsively signs up for military duty after a career-busting injury. On his first tour, he finds himself stationed on a rooftop in Fallujah, forced to decide whether the Iraqis in his crosshairs are terrorists or innocent civilians. This will become his surreal reality for the next several years, as he discovers a formidable gift for marksmanship.

His ability to pick off enemies earns the attention of his local counterpart, a rebel appropriately called “the Butcher.” Kyle isn’t remotely intimidated by the bounty on his head; in fact, whenever he’s not situated above the city, he hits the ground, fearlessly leading door-to-door searches that only increase his reputation among other troops.”

” The New York Daily News has pointed to this sad but fascinating video of a dog meticulously burying the body of a dead puppy. Using its snout, the dog pushes sand over the lifeless body of the puppy in an apparent act of mourning.”

” The New York Post was derided Tuesday for apparent inaccuracies in its reporting on the bombing at the Boston Marathon. And now, its rival tabloid, the Daily News, is facing criticism over an apparent photo touch-up.

On yesterday’s cover wrap, the News ran a photo taken by John Tlumacki of The Boston Globe showing an injured woman lying in a pool of blood while being tended to by a civilian.

But the version published by the News seemed to erase a gory wound to the woman’s leg that was visible in other publications that used the photo. On Tuesday evening, a link to a blog post exposing the manipulation began circulating among News journalists, some of whom were none-too-pleased about the situation, multiple newsroom sources told Capital.”

Do We Get Rid of Both?

” Not surprisingly, mass murderer Adam Lanza was a deeply disturbed kid:

Lanza’s strange behavior was well-known among his well-heeled neighbors in leafy Newtown, Conn. His antics irked several residents.

Mass murderer Adam Lanza, 20, was a ticking time bomb, people who knew him told the Daily News.

Apparently, his mother was often home to check on her son, despite him being 20 years old. Ann Althouse had this to say:

But why isn’t there more talk about institutionalizing the mentally ill? Adam Lanza’s mother needed to be home with him? What 20-year-old needs pervasive supervision from his mother? I suspect the mother, who is now dead, had very serious problems of her own. I can’t understand her keeping those 3 weapons — pictured at the link — in the home along with a 20-year-old man who — in her view — required her stay-at-home motherhood. ”

Mother Threatens Flasher with Pistol, Sicks Dogs on Him

” Public flashers are an odd bunch. They seem to get their kicks by running around and showing off their concealed, um, goods to complete strangers, so to speak. Flashers may want to be careful about who they flash, though…

A 35-year-old woman was visiting Lake Sacajawea in Washington state with her 6-year-old son when she had a close encounter with a flasher on Thursday around 8 p.m. She later told police that a man in his early 20s allegedly sat down near her and began performing a sex act, according to reports. He told the mother, “Miss, miss. Could you watch this? You need to watch this.”

Well, she wasn’t particularly interested in watching, but if the flasher wanted to do some show-and-tell then she wasn’t about to disappoint. “I put the magazine in my [Ruger .380]. I cocked it,” the woman said. “I said, ‘You need to leave or I’ll shoot you. I’m going to blow your brains out.’”

The man shouted, “Oh, [expletive]!” and fled. “
