” A home invasion ended in violence Thursday morning when a 74-year-old homeowner shot and killed an armed suspect who had broken into his home.

The incident occurred at 4:47 a.m. in the 15000 block of Flanders, according to Chief Jeff Smith.

“ The defendant entered the home through a window and had a firearm with him,” Smith said. “The house was occupied by a man and his wife. He had a legal firearm and confronted the intruder. He ended up shooting him and the defendant died at the scene.”

Police are working to identify the invader and have declined to release the names of the homeowners.

“ As he walked through the house, the home invader confronted him with his (handgun),” Coombs said. “(The homeowner) shot the home invader, and the home invader died here on the scene.” “

Detroit Database Held For Ransom

Bitcoin.png

” Mayor Mike Duggan detailed Monday how Detroit has been victimized by cyber crimes, including how a city database was frozen in April and held for ransom.

Duggan said the city database was held hostage for a ransom of 2,000 bitcoins, an encrypted digital currency. A bitcoin is currently worth $401.75, making that ransom worth $803,500. Duggan said the ransom was not paid and the database wasn’t used or needed by the city.

“ It was a good warning sign for us,” he said at Michigan’s third summit focusing on cyber security issues in government, business and other sectors at the North American International Cyber Summit at Cobo Center. “

The 50 Most Violent Cities In The World

” Murder is more common in Latin America than in any other part of the world.

That’s the most striking takeaway from a ranking of the most violent cities compiled earlier this year by Mexico’s Citizens’ Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice. The ranking doesn’t count deaths in war zones or cities with unavailable data.

Thirty-four of the 50 worst cities were located in the region, including repeat murder capital of the world — San Pedro Sula, Honduras — which saw 187 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2013 and is getting steadily worse. A full one-third of global homicides occur in Latin America even though the region has just 8% of the world’s population, according to United Nations data.

Drug trafficking, gang wars, political instability, corruption, and poverty combine to cause the region’s elevated violence.

US cities also made the list, led by Detroit at No. 24 and New Orleans at No. 26. “

If readers are looking for a common thread in the violence of the US cities look no further than the local governance of each one . Baltimore hasn’t seen a republican mayor since 1967  and Detroit since 1962  . The last time New Orleans elected a republican leader was in 1872 and St Louis has been led by the Democrats since 1943 . Surprised ? I didn’t think so .

State Orders Man To Pay $30k In Child Support Or Face Jail, Despite Proof He Is Not Father

” In child support cases, courts sometimes force people to pay back the government’s welfare contributions to a child, even in scenarios when the person being ordered to pay support is not actually the child’s parent. According to WXYZ-TV ABC 7 Detroit, Detroit man Carnell Alexander is facing that exact situation after an ex-girlfriend of his listed him as the father of her child on an application for welfare benefits. Despite the facts that a DNA test proved that he is not the father and his ex-girlfriend agrees that he should not have to pay support, the State of Michigan is ordering him to either pay back the nearly $30,000 worth of welfare contributions it paid to the child’s mother or go to jail.

In 1991, Alexander was informed during a routine traffic stop that there was a warrant out for his arrest due to his failure to pay support for a child that he had allegedly fathered back in 1978. However, Alexander had no children. In a court hearing, the state claimed that he was listed as a child’s father on a welfare benefits application and that too much time had passed for him to request a DNA test to contest its paternity claim. The court argues that he knowingly ignored a court order requiring him to pay support and that he should have raised the issue when that order was given to him. In the late ’80s, a process server signed a document alleging that the court order was delivered to Alexander at his father’s house and that he refused to sign it. However, WXYZ-TV ABC 7 Detroit made contact with the Michigan Department of Corrections and confirmed that Alexander was incarcerated at the time of the delivery of the court order, meaning it was impossible for him to have seen the order and refused to sign. Alexander maintains that he never saw the order and knew nothing of the alleged paternity dispute until he was pulled over and informed many years later.”

Missing 12-Year-Old Michigan Boy Found Alive In His Own Basement

” The father of a 12-year-old boy who has been missing since June 14 appears overjoyed that his son has been found alive in the basement of his own home, in video footage from the Detroit Free Press. The house had previously been searched by police and FBI agents, and the boy was not in the home during those searches. Wednesday, 12-year-old Charles Bothuell V was found hiding behind a barrier constructed of boxes and a plastic drum. The authorities say the boy could not have assembled the barricade on his own.”

FBI Detroit

” The Federal Bureau of Investigation says not to be alarmed by the increased presence of law enforcers near Ford Field Wednesday.

It is an emergency exercise to test emergency preparedness.

The event is a training exercise and is not being held in response to any current threat, and measures have been taken to minimize disruption to the surrounding communities,” the FBI said in a statement Tuesday. “At various times throughout the day, citizens may notice an increase in the presence of law enforcement personnel or vehicles at certain locations throughout the metropolitan area. Both air and ground assets will be used during the exercise.”

The purpose is to “improve collective response capabilities and the coordination of investigative efforts,” FBI officials say.”

2014 Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix: Showcasing The Best In Racing

” Two years ago, the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix made what was supposed to be its triumphant return after a three-year hiatus.

Public and private officials in Detroit touted the event’s return as another significant step in turning around the city. But in reality, Belle Isle itself wasn’t ready for the severe beating three days of racing can do to a course and nearly 100,000 people.

The 2012 nationally televised event was delayed for hours due to patches of the track becoming unearthed. Race fans, media and drivers all looked on in bewilderment.

” It was like playing Russian roulette, and I just pulled a bullet,” said James Hinchcliffe, who crashed his car into a safety barrier after hitting a piece of the unearthed track in 2012.

However, those days have now long passed, according to this attendees this weekend at the 2014 Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

” It’s much better laid out,” said Molly Bogardus during Friday’s practice and qualifying rounds. The 46-year-old Eaton Rapids, Mich., resident has attended the Grand Prix with her husband, Jeff Bogardus, every year since its return three years ago.”

Detroit’s Decline, As Told By Google Street View

” As the chief product officer at LOVELAND Technologies—a company whose mission is to “gather and present public information about properties” in the interest of “foreclosure prevention, blight identification and reduction, the reuse of vacant space, and the preservation of community assets”—Alex Alsup wades through data on the troubled city of Detroit every day. Luckily for us, he’s been sharing what he sees on a fascinating Tumblr.

GooBing Detroit,” as the name hints, originally featured comparisons of local properties as they appeared on Google Street View (c. 2009) and Bing Streetside (c. 2012). Now Alsup can use Google’s Time Machine feature to collect his images, but the results are no less striking. In just a few short years, abandoned houses crumble to pieces, while fully demolished buildings give way to wild overgrowth and trash-strewn fields.”

Teacher Fired For Using Broom To Break Up Detroit Classroom Fight

” A teacher who swatted a student with a broom while trying to break up a frenzied fight between two teenagers was fired over the incident by the Education Achievement Authority.

The fight occurred in a classroom at Pershing High School, one of 15 low-performing Detroit schools taken over by the state-run Education Achievement Authority in 2012.

Cellphone video footage of the incident obtained by WJBK-TV shows the teacher frantically trying to stop the fight using a broomstick before the two were finally separated from each other, apparently by classmates.”

VIDEO: Courageous Citizen Attempts To Pull Over A Cop

” A civilian tries to call out the police on their “above the law” hypocrisy by attempting to pull over and cite an officer driving down the road without his seat belt on. The cop scoffs at the underling’s attempts, but it is a valiant effort nonetheless.

The seat belt requirement is nothing short of another tax on driving and it should be completely up to the individual whether or not they would like to wear their seat belt. Yes seat belts save lives, but this does not grant the state the right to violate your person or property to mandate that you wear one.”

Man Hits Boy With Truck In Detroit, Is Severely Beaten, Robbed When Stopping To Help

Driver Beaten Detroit

” A 54-year-old man is in critical condition after being beaten by a group when he pulled over to help a 10-year-old boy he accidentally hit with his truck

Witnesses tell police and 7 Action News that the driver of the truck, a 54-year-old man, got out to help the boy but before he could reach him, a group of teens and adults jumped the man and started beating him.

“ I think it lasted about one minute and then they let him go.  And then they jumped back on him again and they did it about three times and finally someone was trying to help the guy that got beat up,” said a witness who did not want to reveal his identity.  “It was sad because I knew the guy was getting out of his car to try and see what damage he did,” said the witness.

David’s godfather said the family doesn’t approve of what the group did to the driver.

His godson was taken to the hospital to take care of his leg and for additional X-Rays.  As for the driver who tried to help him, he is still fighting for his life.

The group also robbed the driver of his wallet.”

For The Fifth Time In Two Weeks, A Detroit Homeowner Has Killed A Burglar

” Another Detroit homeowner has shot and killed a burglar, George Hunter reports.

It’s at least the fifth such incident in recent weeks.

Thursday’s shooting happened at about 12:30 p.m. when two men allegedly broke into a home on the 8200 block of Penrod on the city’s west side, Detroit Police Third Deputy Chief Rodney Johnson said.

“ The homeowner was able to retrieve his weapon, and fired hitting one of the burglars,” Johnson said. “He ran away and collapsed in the driveway. The other burglar was able to escape.”

His suspected accomplice, a man in his 20s, fled the scene and is still at-large.

In January, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said criminals would think twice if more citizens were armed.”

You can read the rest of the story here and read our posts on other recent instances of Detroit citizens fighting back here , here , and here  . Chief Craig knows of what he speaks and the citizens seem to have taken his message to heart . Good for them and good for us all .

As the death toll for thugs rises at the hands of armed citizens it is worth noting that our homeowners and citizens seldom seem to miss their intended targets . It seems that every time we report on one of these incidents of self-defense , whether fatal or not , the civilians show remarkable restraint , fire just enough rounds to do the job , have a very high hit ratio , do not endanger innocent bystanders and don’t resort to the standard “spray and pray” tactics so commonly found among the shootings that involve the “professionals” . Just an observation …

Mom Opens Fire On Home Invaders In Detroit To Defend Children

” A Detroit mother opened fire Monday night when three suspects broke into her home.

Surveillance cameras caught it all.

The mother tells Action News she “didn’t have time to get scared.” When she heard the door to her home on Woodrow Wilson being kicked in, she immediately warned the three teenage intruders and then opened fire.

One of the teens dropped a handgun on his way out the door. He then tried to get back inside the house a second time, but was again met with gunfire. Once again, he took off and all three were arrested shortly after the incident by Detroit Police.”

The Motor City Needs Help. Why Not Turn It Into Hong Kong?

cat

” Detroit is beautiful—though you probably have to be a child of the industrial Midwest, like me, to see it. As you may have heard, the city is in trouble. At the end of the 2013 fiscal year, Detroit had a balance sheet with liabilities of $9.05 billion. The city’s emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, estimates long-term debt at $18 billion.

But I know how to fix Detroit, because it reminds me of another favorite place, Hong Kong—two things so opposite that they evoke each other the way any Kardashian is a reminder that you love home and mother.

Hong Kong’s per capita GDP is among the highest in the world. But it was once a worse mess than Detroit. Devastated by Japanese occupation, the British colony’s population had declined from 1.6 million in 1941 to 600,000 by 1945. Then, after the 1949 communist victory on the mainland, a million refugees arrived. Most of them were penniless. Britain’s Labor government was penniless, too. Maybe Hong Kong could have gone into Chapter 9. But who would have been the bankruptcy judge? Chairman Mao?”

Cat Attacks Woman Kicking Snow At It In Detroit

Published on Dec 17, 2013

” A Detroit-area woman who was allegedly trying to “protect” her dog from a stray cat went about it in the worst possible way — by kicking snow in its face. The cat, being a cat, responds by pouncing in the woman and dropping her like a sack of Meow Mix. The woman then retreats from the scene of the cat fight holding her injured head, leaving the dog she was “protecting” behind as the ferocious feline approaches the unattended fence.

Moral of this story: Cats don’t like having snow kicked in their face “

The 10 Most Troubled City Systems

unfunded liabilities

” More and more cities, counties, and even some states will face the harsh reality of having to fix their pension systems or deal with a Detroit-style bankruptcy.

“This is happening in too many cities and towns across America, where social services, because they can be cut, are cut. Because pensions and bonds constitutionally cannot be cut, they’re the protected class,” Wall Street financial analyst Meredith Whitney told CNBC.

“I think you’re going to see a real issue of neighbor against neighbor on these very issues,” said Whitney, who recently co-founded Kenbelle Capital LP, a New York hedge fund.”

That’s the bad news . Here is the worse news .

“But here’s the real rub: experts are warning that many pension systems, those claiming they are well funded and those who say they aren’t, have all been using rosy projections about future investment returns.

In a recent editorial in Barron’s, Thomas Donlan writes that pension funds have “hidden the results with dubious financial reporting.”

Detroit, he says, was using the standard 8 percent return on assets, widely used by other funds. Donlan argues that is foolhardy to claim an 8 percent rate of return.

Consider that since January 1, 2001, the Dow Jones has appreciated, on average, a paltry 2.2 percent, with the S&P growing just 1.36 percent.”

Municipal governments throughout the nation have been hiding their unfunded liabilities with parlor games and dubious economic assumptions that guarantee that no matter how bleak things seem today , they will be orders of magnitude worse in the very near future .

Rand Paul: You’ll Bail Out Detroit ‘Over My Dead Body’

” Why would Mr. Paul be so against another bailout? Hmm, maybe because we don’t have the money. That kind of stuff matters to some of us.

His final piece of advice:

“You don’t set up an implicit promise from the federal government that everybody is getting bailed out,” Paul said. “It’s sort of like too big to fail for banks. If you have too big to fail for cities or for states and they believe they’ll be bailed out they’ll continue to make unwise decisions.

“So, really, the answer is, just like the federal government, live within your means and spend what you have but don’t spend money you don’t have. The problem is so many of our state governments, the politicians are being elected by the public service unions. ”
