The Death Rattle Of Europe’s Statist Dream

” Europe’s all-too-predictable relapse into recession is gathering force, threatening not only the pipe dream of economic and political unity, but eroding grandiose illusions that have helped prop up the world’s financial house of cards. The unwillingness of France in particular to play by the EU’s — i.e.,  Germany’s — rules appears to have doomed the EU dream. The idea of a borderless Europe bound by a common currency and a shared desire to forever banish war from the Continent was a lofty one, but it was mired from the start in deeply rooted political animosities, grass-roots skepticism and bureaucratic overreach. Now these problems, along with a great many others, have turned the EU project into a Tower of Babel. A million pages of meticulously codified EU rules might as well have been written in cuneiform, so inscrutable and arcane have they become.

And useless as well. France’s prolonged economic death rattle has been made possible by running annual deficits larger by half than the 3% “allowed” by Brussels. And now, channeling  de Gaulle for what could turn out to be France’s last hurrah, the French have flouted Merckel’s authority, and common sense itself, by proposing to remedy the problem by hiring more government workers and expanding tax breaks.  Portugal, Greece, Spain and the other deadbeat rabble have been cheering them on, and why not? They think they have nothing to lose — that Germany is the only country with any skin in the game. Their folly is about to be laid bare, however, unless Germany gives in and allows Europe’s Central Bank to monetize the collective debts of Europe Fed-style. “

Google Received 12,000 Requests To Be ‘Forgotten’ On First Day, Report Says

google form

” It’s been less than 48 hours since Google launched its online tool that allows people in the European Union to request to be “forgotten” from search results, and the company has already received 12,000 requests, according to a new report.

The requests are in response to a European Court of Justice ruling earlier this month that found EU citizens have a “right to be forgotten” online and that Google must remove links to search results that can damage a person’s reputation.

Reuters reports the company received 12,000 requests in the first 24 hours the form was online, with requests at times coming in as fast as 20 per minute.”

Rebellion Is Brewing Against The Political Elite That Has Ruined Europe

hqdefault

” The EU has always been at heart an elite project. It has been defined by rule from above, made deliberately unintelligible to the average citizen. Its first architects, having lived through the fascism of the Thirties and the horrors of the Second World War, indeed had excellent reasons for distrusting democracy and the popular will.

This helps to explain the most unlikely feature of the European system: the absence of opposition. Next month’s elections will see a surge of support for anti-European parties, but for the most part they articulate national concerns and do not walk together. Mr Farage’s Ukip, for example will have nothing to do with Mme Le Pen’s National Front. There is no common anti-European agenda – which is an important reason why the established parties will continue to dominate the European Parliament after next month’s elections.”

Barack Obama’s First Visit To Brussels To Cost Belgium More Than €10m

sendthrift-president

” As Belgium’s capital and host to the EU and Nato, Brussels is used to deploying heavy security when big names pop by. But US President Barack Obama‘s visit on Tuesday will strain the city like never before with €10m ($10.4m, £8.4m) of Belgian money being spent to cover his 24 hours in the country.

The president will arrive on Tuesday night with a 900-strong entourage, including 45 vehicles and three cargo planes. Advance security teams orchestrating every last detail have combed Brussels already, checking the sewers and the major hospitals, while American military helicopters were last week given the green light for overflights. The city hosts at least four EU summits a year, with each of these gatherings costing €500,000 in extra police, military and transport expenses. “But this time round, you can multiply that figure by 20,” said Brussels mayor, Yvan Mayeur.”

The Guardian has more on the cost for Brussels , but what of the cost to American taxpayers ?

Russia Tightens Grip On Crimea As Markets Tumble

Russia tightens grip on Crimea as markets tumble

” Russia cemented its control of the flashpoint Crimean peninsula without firing a shot as markets plunged on Monday and world leaders held a series of crisis talks over the worst standoff between Moscow and the West since the Cold War.

The price of oil surged on fears of an all-out conflict as Russia looked set to send troops into eastern parts of Ukraine, an area with close ties to Russia that the Kremlin has vowed to protect from “ultranationalist forces”.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague opened talks with Ukraine’s Western-backed but untested interim leaders a day after the world’s top industrialised powers threatened to strip Russia of its coveted seat at the Group of Eight for menacing its ex-Soviet neighbour.

Germany offered a rare glimmer of hope by announcing that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed in telephone talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel late Sunday to set up a contact group on Ukraine.

Western allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation also said they wanted to send international observers to Ukraine while engaging Moscow in direct talks.”

Deadliest Day In Ukraine Protests Yet, Despite Truce

Published on Feb 20, 2014

” At least 75 people have been killed in violent riots in Kiev, the Ukrainian Health Department has stated. Doctors working on Kiev’s Independence Square, however, claimed that as many as 70 people were killed on the rioters’ side alone on Thursday. The death toll in the most violent wave of clashes between the rioters and the police in Kiev is likely to increase, as there are conflicting figures coming from the Health Department, city officials and the opposition. As many as 550 people have been injured, according to official estimates. Until this week, snipers shooting people in central Kiev have been little more than unsupported hearsay. But on Thursday, both security forces and rioters were filmed stalking the streets with rifles. RT’s Aleksey Yaroshevsky reports to Meghan Lopez that unidentified snipers were firing from buildings all around Independence Square.

On the diplomatic side the EU and US are threatening sanctions …

Published on Feb 20, 2014

” The United States, European Union and NATO are criticizing the Ukrainian government for its role in the increasing bloodshed in Kiev. EU leaders have agreed to impose sanctions on the country, joining the US in threatening consequences. Individual sanctions for 20 Ukrainian politicians have already been imposed by Washington. Critics, including The Nation’s contributing editor, Stephen Cohen, say that threats of sanctions and misunderstanding of the situation on the ground are misguided. RT’s Gayane Chichakyan looks at how the US and EU are reacting to the increasing violence in Ukraine.

Meanwhile Euromaidan In English provides us with this report on the day’s events in Kiev …

” This is what happened today (please share to inform all):
——————————————

Today, after the morning massacres had calmed down a little, opposition politicians began calling for MP’s to gather in Parliament at 3pm. Deputy Lyashko and others pronounced guarantees to Party of Regions MP’s that no demonstrations would be held near the building during this special session – apparently some government MP’s had expressed concern for their own safety in the wake of that morning’s violence and deaths.

The session did not start until around 5pm, and MPs gathered very gradually. Initially, only 227 registered (minimum quorum: 226), but as the evening wore on, more and more MP’s from the Party of Regions and nominal independents arrived. By 10pm, 238 had registered to vote. The key test came just after 10pm when the speeches ceased and a draft document was put to a vote. In the end 236 voted in favor of the “Postanova” that orders the following:

1. All Interior Ministry troops currently in Kyiv are ordered to cease fire and return to barracks.
2. All live ammunition and lethal weapons that have been issued to government forces are to be returned immediately.
3. Blocking roads and rail lines for the purpose of limiting the movement of people is to cease.
4. All anti terrorist operations currently undertaken by the State Security Service and Interior Ministry are to be stopped immediately.
5. Circumstances that have led to deaths and casualties are to be investigated and the guilty brought to trial forthwith by the Prosecutor General.
6. The Cabinet of Ministers is ordered to provide financial compensation to all victims of the recent violence and their families.
7. Activists arrested for their participation in protests are to be released and all criminal cases against them closed.
8. It is now the exclusive right of parliament to declare a state of emergency. All of the above was passed as a “Postanova” – a one time legislative order that has the force of law, but according to Ukraine’s Constitution, and unlike other laws, need not be signed by the President. Postanova’s are signed by the Chairman/Speaker of the Parliament, or in his absence, by one of his Deputies. Tonight’s session of Parliament was chaired by Svoboda MP Koshulynsky, and he has signed the document making it legal.

  Two points of significance:

1) Parliamentary Speaker Rybak and First Deputy Speaker Kaletnyk (Communist Party) were not present at tonight’s session; neither were 167 deputies from the Party of Regions, nor any of the Communist MP’s. Nevertheless, a temporary majority was assembled with all members of the 3 opposition parties and most independents in attendance together with 20+ Party of Regions MPs who have now effectively defected from the government camp. According to rumors many Party of Regions MPs left the country today – including (according to some reports) Speaker Rybak.

Does this signal a permanent end to the pro-Yanukovych majority in Parliament? If so, it signifies the beginning of the end of his regime.2) Although a Postanova is a legislative order that has the force of law, and cannot be vetoed by the President, it is unclear what happens if Yanukovych issues a Presidential Decree cancelling the Postanova. Furthermore, it is unclear which should take precedent: the Law on Counter-Terrorism which has been the formal document used to authorize the use of lethal force and abrogation of civil rights during the past 2 days, or the one-time Postanova. Finally is highly unclear whether Interior Ministry forces will obey this Postanova at all.

After passing their document, Ukraine’s 3 opposition leaders immediately left Parliament for the Presidential Administration building where, reportedly, they were joined by 3 visiting EU foreign ministers. Apparently they will attempt to collectively convince Yanukovych to accept the need for constitutional changes – these are to be voted on tomorrow. Whether enough votes can be gathered, and whether Yanukovych will budge are all open questions…

У Житомирі впав Ленін

Published on Feb 20, 2014

To round out this evening’s update on Ukrainian news we present this report regarding an alleged conspiracy of sorts as to the “grassroots” nature of the viral video “I Am A Ukranian” and thus the riots themselves .

” As they seize weapons, take over government buildings and fire on media outlets, the US-backed Ukrainian protesters are being afforded legitimacy with the aid of a Kony 2012-style viral video which triumphs the grass roots nature of the demonstrations yet is linked to shadowy NGOs that have been directly involved in staging phony ‘color revolutions’ in the past.

The woman encourages viewers to “help us only by telling this story….only by sharing this video,” thereby framing the debate around the naive narrative that the crisis is solely about Ukrainians wanting “freedom,” and in essence blacklisting the real reasons behind the western-instigated revolt, which focus on the geopolitical isolation of Russia.

The origins of the video are not quite as ‘grass roots’ as is portrayed. The clip was produced by the team behind A Whisper to a Roar, a documentary about the “fight for democracy” all over the world, which was funded by Prince Moulay Hicham of Morocco. The “inspiration” behind the documentary was none other than Larry Diamond, a Council on Foreign Relations member. The Council on Foreign Relations is considered to be America’s “most influential foreign-policy think tank” and has deep connections with the U.S. State Department.

Diamond has also worked closely with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The National Endowment for Democracy is considered to be the CIA’s “civilian arm” and has been deeply embroiled in innumerable instigated uprisings, attempted coups and acts of neo-colonial regime change since its creation in 1983, including the contrived 2004 “Orange Revolution” that brought US puppet Viktor Yushchenko to power in Ukraine.  “

Ukraine Crisis: Renewed Kiev Assault On Protesters

” Police in the Ukrainian capital Kiev have launched a fresh attack on anti-government protesters as the death toll in renewed clashes has climbed to 26.

The new attempt to uproot the protest stronghold came as President Yanukovych blamed opposition leaders for the worst violence in months of unrest.

The EU says it expects to agree sanctions on those behind “repression”.

The violence is contained – and mostly takes place in four square kilometres in central Kiev – but the determination of the most active protesters should not be underestimated, nor should President Viktor Yanukovych’s determination to survive.

It’s unlikely that any leader of a Western European democracy would still be in post if similar events had happened in their country.

What makes this crisis so serious is the quiet support that many in western Ukraine, particularly in Lviv, are giving to the violence. It means that a split between eastern Ukraine and western Ukraine is being openly discussed, even though few people say they want that.”

Europe Is Set To Mandate “Remote Stopping Device” In All Cars For Police Use

” Well this sounds like one of the worst ideas I have heard of in a long time. Naturally, it would emerge from the EU, the sorriest excuse for a fake government the world has ever seen.

While I have reported previously on regulatory efforts to put all sorts of invasive mandatory devices in U.S. automobiles (from October of last year Big Brother is Coming to Your Car), this idea from the EU take things to a whole other level of insanity.

From the BBC:

A device that would enable police to stop vehicles remotely is being considered by an EU-wide official working group, it has emerged.

The feasibility of such technology is being examined by members of the European Network of Law Enforcement Technology Services (Enlets).

The technology could impact on both road safety and civil liberties.

Civil liberties? What are those?”

Shocking Police Brutality In Ukraine; Riots Spreading To Major Cities

” In a shocking video released today on the Internet, special government police force “Berkut” beat up and humiliate an arrested activist on Grushevsky Street in Ukraine’s capital, Kiev. The man, wearing a “Ukrainian cossack” haircut, is severely beaten and can be seen with bruises and lacerations all over his naked body. The police strip him to his socks in 25 degrees Farenheit weather, scream insults, and force him to hold a small shovel as they take pictures.

Other videos of clashes and police brutality against the pro-European protesters are circulating the Internet.

Protesters are fighting back by publishing the names of policemen and their officials responsible for the murders and brutality on social media, calling for vengeance. The flyer below promises $5,000 for the information about the “Berkut” officer who murdered activist Sergei Nigoyan and $100,000 “for the head of that scumbag.” “

Torches Lit, Ukrainian Nationalists Celebrate An Inconvenient Hero

” The pro-Western protests on Kiev’s Independence Square turned into a New Year’s celebration last week, transforming the world’s biggest ongoing protest into a huge party. But after some 200,000 people looked hopefully to the upcoming year amid fireworks, dancing and mass singing of the national anthem at the “Euromaidan,” the dawn of 2014 saw a different kind of torch-lit protest.

On Jan. 1, Thousands of Ukrainian nationalists marched in Kiev and the western city of Lviv to honor the what would have been the 105th birthday of Stepan Bandera, one of the most controversial figures in modern Ukrainian history — a Nazi collaborator, freedom fighter, and, to some, a terrorist.

The marches, and their hero, highlight the profound complexities in today’s Ukraine, where past allegiances, prospects for the future, and a strong desire for independence — after centuries under foreign rule — all run into each other, creating a web difficult to untangle.

The anti-government opposition is far from a unified, “Western-minded,” liberal front that would provide an easy narrative for would-be allies in the West. While the Maidan’s leadership includes the charismatic boxing champion Vitali Klitschko (who became the face of the fight against President Victor Yanukovych’s regime), it also boasts Oleg Tyagnibok, a notoriously racist leader of the far-right Svoboda party.”

European Far-Right Parties Team Up Against Islam And Brussels

” Six European far-right parties joined forces Thursday to combat immigration and European bureaucracy ahead of 2014 elections, French newspaper Liberation reported.

The parties, which include France’s Front National, are teaming up against two common enemies: Brussels and Islam, the newspaper said. The Netherlands’ PVV, Belgium’s Vlaams Belang, Italy’s Liga Norte, Swedish democrats and Austria’s Freedom Party met at a hotel in Vienna to discuss the outlines of their collaboration.

The meeting happened in secret so as not to attract the attention of possible demonstrators, the paper said, and to be able to devote their time to strategizing about the future of the far-right in Europe.

But Andreas Molzer, the organizer of the meeting and an Austrian member of the European Parliament, confirmed the meeting took place. “The points that unite us are more important than those that separate us,” he told Liberation.”

The “extreme right” of Europe seems to be very similar to the Tea Party on this side of the pond . In typical leftist controlled media fashion those with a divergent viewpoint must be “extreme” . More power to the nationalists . Who really wants their country to be turned into Islamic slums even as the original citizens are forced top foot the bill ?

Seizures at Cyprus Already Being Repeated, in Principle, in American Levies

” The prospect of a tax on deposits in the banks of Cyprus has even left-leaning economic commentators in a tizzy.“A tactical blunder,” declared Lawrence Summers, who was President Clinton’s Treasury Secretary and chairman of the National Economic Council for President Obama. A proposed tax of 6.75% on deposits up to about $130,000 and of 9.9% on deposits of more than $130,000 “would unfairly punish savers and could do lasting damage to confidence in banks in other euro-zone countries in financial crisis,” the New York Times wrote in an editorial denouncing the idea

Is it the taking? Bloomberg View columnist Caroline Baum, a sage, criticized the Cyprus proposal on the grounds that it is a confiscation that “amounts to a seizure of private property.” For those of us Americans who will see the IRS or state governments withdraw funds from our own bank accounts next month for tax owed, or who are seeing payroll withdrawals and estimated tax payments this year that are higher than they have been in a decade, the distinction between “seizure of private property” in Cyprus and here at home will be, alas, an awfully fine one.”

Cypriot President ‘Warned His Friends  To Move Money Abroad’ Before Financial Crisis Hit

” Cypriot president Nikos Anastasiades ‘warned’ close friends of the financial crisis about to engulf his country so they could move their money abroad, it was claimed on Friday.

The respected Cypriot newspaper Filelftheros made the allegation which was picked up eagerly by German media.

Germans are angry at the way their country has been linked to the Nazis and Hitler by Cypriots angry at the defunct rescue deal which called for a levy on all savings.

The Cyprus newspaper did not say how much money was moved abroad but quoted sources saying the president ‘knew about the possible closure of the banks’ and tipped off close friends who were able to move vast sums abroad.

Italian media said the 4.5 billion euros left the island in the week before the crisis.”

EUROZONE COUNTRY: SURPRISE! WE’RE PUTTING AT LEAST A 6.75% TAX ON YOUR BANK DEPOSITS

” People with bank accounts in Cyprus were shocked Saturday to learn that as part of an agreement reached with international creditors, the government has imposed a tax on all deposits to help bail out the nation and its banks.

While the island nation may be small, it’s an international favorite for offshore banking– particularly for wealthy Russians.  The tax will range from 6.75% to 9.9%, depending on how much is in the account.

“This is a clear-cut robbery,” Andreas Moyseos, a former electrician who is now a pensioner in Nicosia, told the New York Times. Iliana Andreadakis, a book critic, further added: “This issue doesn’t only affect the people’s deposits, but also the prospect of the Cyprus economy. The E.U. has diminished its credibility.” “

Joe Biden Confuses Poland With Portugal In Latest Embarrassing Gaffe For The Vice President

” Biden has a well-earned reputation as a gaffe-maker extraordinaire, and this speech was no exception. In a key passage on the Eurozone debt crisis, Biden referred to Portugal, as Poland, a mistake subsequently corrected in the official White House transcript:

Needless to say, Poland is not even a member of the Eurozone, and its economy is in considerably better shape than that of debt-ridden Portugal. Biden’s blunder is the latest in a series of Obama presidency insults relating to Poland. In May last year Barack Obama was strongly criticised by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk after he described Nazi death camps during World War Two as “a Polish death camp.” Tusk blasted Obama’s statement for its “ignorance, lack of knowledge, (and) bad intentions.” In 2010 Obama chose to play golf on the day of the funeral of the Polish President Lech Kaczynski, the Polish First Lady, and 94 senior officials who were killed in the Smolensk air disaster, an act that was viewed as deeply insensitive by many Poles. In addition, the Obama administration announced the cancellation of Third Site missile defences on September 17, 2009, which also happened to be the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland.”

China Joins U.S., Japan, EU In Condemning North Korea Nuclear Test

” North Korea conducted its third nuclear test on Tuesday in defiance of existing U.N. resolutions, drawing condemnation from the United States, Japan, Europe and Pyongyang’s only major ally, China, which summoned the North Korean ambassador to protest.

The North said the test had “greater explosive force” than the 2006 and 2009 tests. Its KCNA news agency said it had used a “miniaturized” and lighter nuclear device, indicating that it had again used plutonium which is more suitable for use as a missile warhead.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the third of his line to rule the country, has presided over two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test during his first a year in power, pursuing policies that have propelled his impoverished and malnourished country closer to becoming a nuclear weapons power.”

“In the twilight of the West, America and Europe are still different but only to this extent: They’ve wound up taking separate paths to the same destination. Whether you get there via an artificial common currency for an invented pseudo-jurisdiction or through quantitative easing and the global decline of the dollar, whether you spend your final years in the care of Medicare or the National Health Service death panels, whether higher education is just another stage of cradle-to-grave welfare or you have a trillion dollars’ worth of personal college debt, in 2012 the advanced Western social-democratic citizen looks pretty similar, whether viewed from Greece or Germany, California or Quebec.”

“What’s it like taking a course with 120,000 other students?
That is one of the questions raised this spring by the debut of MITx , the Institute’s new online educational initiative. ”

“Myriam Nonaka, an electrical engineering student at the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional in Buenos Aires, Argentina, finds 6.002x to be “very entertaining,” and singles out the course’s online discussion forum as a place “where you can share and learn.”
Indeed, the forum, where students discuss the course and offer assistance to each other, is something that almost all MITx participants cite as a defining feature of the experience. ”

There is nowhere to hide . The internet is/will be the greatest  tool of freedom and liberty mankind has ever seen . The possibilities are endless .
From making higher education affordable  , crowdsourcing , Kickstarter and self-publishing , to grocery delivery , telephone calls and even entertainment like books , music , movies and radio the web offers it all , and that doesn’t even take into consideration the social side of the digital world such as Twitter , Facebook , Blogging and the myriad other means of expressing one’s self .

Welcome to the Revolution my friends . Liberty is there for all as long as we can keep the web as it is … That means , HANDS OFF.

Yes , you know who I’m talking about .

Those sanctimonious corporate lackeys in DC and anywhere else that lesser creatures gather to try and administrate us right into the ground .
Whether it be in Washington , Brussels , New York , Tehran , BeijingIndia or any other place with despotic ambitions , we must fight and win this struggle . Like no other war that all who yearn for human liberty have engaged in , this one has the potential for WORLD WIDE liberty , perhaps even in my lifetime . The price of losing will be as high as the potential gains would allude to ….. eternal serfdom … You read that right .
Unless the information revolution remains/becomes UNIVERSALLY available we are doomed . Make no mistake , even if we here in the US manage to overcome the corporate rent-seekers and their toadies on Capitol Hill and preserve our internet freedoms it will be a pyrrhic victory rendering all our efforts for naught unless the rest of the world is digitally connected to us . Individually we will be stomped in succesion by the forces of World Government .
