Bill Whittle’s Afterburner

Published on Sep 26, 2013

” Picture an epic scene in a movie where an American fighter jet squares off against an Iranian jet. About to duel, but instead the Iranian bows to the pilot and the technological prowess of the American lands without a shot being fired. This million-dollar scene could be featured in a Tom Cruise movie, but actually, it happened in real life. Hear why this is a success for American foreign policy and history buffs, in this edition of Afterburner with Bill Whittle.

Pentagon: Iranian Plane Pursued US Spy Drone

” An Iranian fighter jet approached a U.S. surveillance drone over the Gulf but broke off its pursuit after the pilot of a U.S. escort plane radioed a verbal warning, the Pentagon said Thursday.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said the incident occurred Tuesday and that the unarmed MQ-1 Predator surveillance drone as well as two U.S. military escort planes remained over international waters at all times.

Little said the drone was conducting a “routine classified” surveillance mission.”

He said the Iranian F-4 plane came as close as 16 miles (25 kilometers)to the drone before it departed.”

More F-35 Problems

New Pentagon Super Fighter Will Get Pilots Shot Down

” The U.S. Air Force version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter has shortcomings that will get pilots shot down in combat, according to a leaked Pentagon report evaluating combat testing of the plane.

“The out-of-cockpit visibility in the F-35A is less than other Air Force fighter aircraft,” states the report from the Defense Department’s Directorate of Operational Test and Evaluation, referring to a pilot’s ability to see the sky around them.

Test pilots’ comments quoted in the report are more blunt.

“The head rest is too large and will impede aft [rear] visibility and survivability during surface and air engagements,” said one. “Aft visibility will get the pilot gunned [down] every time” in dogfights, opined another.”

Fighter Jet Chases Down Small Plane Near Obama’s Florida Resort

” A small plane was intercepted and escorted by a fighter jet to a Florida airport Saturday after violating temporary flight restrictions set up for President Obama’s visit, according to a military spokesman.

The Cessna 152 entered the restricted airspace near the resort where the president is staying in Palm City, according to Army Lt. Col. Mike Humphreys.”

” The military’s North American Aerospace Defense Command sent a F-16 fighter jet and a Coast Guard helicopter to intercept the plane, he said.

The F-16 flew with the plane until it landed at Witham Field in nearby Stuart. The plane was met by local officials and the U.S. Secret Service, and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.”

Two Russian Fighter Jets Breach Japan Airspace: Tokyo

” Two Russian fighter jets violated Japanese airspace on Thursday as Tokyo scrambled its own planes in response, the defence ministry said, reportedly the first such incident in five years.

The Russian planes were detected off the coast of northernmost Hokkaido island for just over a minute, shortly after Japan’s new prime minister said he wants to find a “mutually acceptable solution” to a decades-old territorial row between the countries.

Japan’s foreign ministry lodged a formal protest over the incursion by a pair of Russian Su-27 fighters at about 3:00 pm local time (0600 GMT).

“Today, around 3:00 pm, military fighters belonging to Russian Federation breached our nation’s airspace above territorial waters off Hokkaido’s Rishiri island,” the foreign ministry said.”

Pilot Ejects Safely, No Ground Injuries

” An Air Force F-22 Raptor fighter jet crashed near a Florida Panhandle highway Thursday, but the pilot was able to eject safely and there were no injuries on the ground, the military said.

The single-seat stealth fighter, part of a program that has been plagued with problems, went down Thursday afternoon near Tyndall Air Force Base, just south of Panama City on The Gulf of Mexico. The pilot received medical treatment and a section of Highway 98 that runs through the base was closed as rescuers responded. “
