Dubai Torch Tower: Fire Sweeps Through One Of The World’s Tallest Apartment Towers

” Security guards inside one of the world’s tallest residential towers ran from apartment to apartment as fire alarms blared, calling for those inside to evacuate the building as part of it burned.

Kathryn Dickie, who lives on the 13th floor of The Torch in Dubai, told ABC News that the fire alarms began going off about 2 a.m. local time Saturday.

Dickie said residents believed the fire began near the 51st floor of the 1,100-foot-tall tower. She ran to a friend’s apartment nearby, where they watched firefighters battle the blaze.”

” Dickie posted a video about 4:20 a.m. local time showing the fire going out. The blaze appeared to be extinguished a few hours after it began, reports The Associated Press.”

” June 19,2014 10:52 am. I filmed this approx. 10-15 minutes after the fire started . I was filming a friends boat in south bay close by when we saw the smoke coming from The marine groups yard. This was fascinating to watch through my monitor, but having a boat myself,I couldn’t help thinking of how horrible it would be to have your dream boat go up in flames. I’m sure the insurance will replace it, but wow , what a bummer and a hassle.” “

Mystery Of The Massive Fire Which Ravaged St Louis – America’s Most Prosperous Ancient City

” A mysterious fire which destroyed North America’s greatest ancient civilization has led to fascinating discoveries about social tensions, violent tendencies and religious practices within the society.

The city of Cahokia, whose secrets lie underneath where St Louis, Missouri now stands, was ruined by a huge blaze around the year 1170 CE.

Following the disaster, the Native American city changed dramatically – defense walls were built, buildings fortified and a sun symbol incorporated into designs.

The significant changes have led to one nagging historical mystery – just how did the fire start?

Cahokia, pictured in this illustration, was originally a vast city encircled by 120 pyramids, stretches of farmland and wealthy communities.

Those who built the model city were known as the Mound Builders because of the earthen structures similar to Mayan Temples.”

Fire At Historic Firehouse In Downtown Philadelphia

” A fire erupted at a firehouse in downtown Philadelphia Friday causing extensive damage.

The fire started at about 11:30 a.m. at the firehouse located at 4th and Arch Streets in Old City.

In a twist of irony, firefighters had to turn their water hoses on their own building and attempt to contain the fire. It took firefighters approximately 15 minutes to bring the blaze fully under control, but not before the fire caused severe damage to the firehouse. The flames were so intense that at one point, several of the firehouse’s doors melted.

The firehouse, commonly referred to as the “Ben Franklin Firehouse,” is located at the site of the oldest firehouse country. The original firehouse was founded by Ben Franklin.”

A raging fire that apparently started in a custard shop tore through a New Jersey shore boardwalk Thursday, destroying more than 30 businesses in a tourist mecca just recovering from the damage it sustained in Superstorm Sandy.

Flames and thick black smoke billowed from a long stretch of the boardwalk in Seaside Park, collapsing buildings as the fire quickly spread north into neighboring Seaside Heights, where the MTV reality series “Jersey Shore” was filmed. “

Syracuse University Expels Student Over Facebook Comments

” “I was expelled from Syracuse University for comments that I posted on Facebook.”

Syracuse University School of Education graduate student Matthew Werenczak was just trying to finish his masters degree early when he decided to take a summer course that involved tutoring at a local middle school. But after a comment he posted on Facebook about an experience he had at the school caught the attention of the Syracuse administration, Werenczak would be lucky if he graduated at all.

On the first day of Werenczak’s tutoring program at Danforth Middle School, he and another Syracuse student were introduced to their students by a member of the Concerned Citizens Action Program (CCAP). They happened to be the only two white people in the room. Shortly after the introduction, in the presence of Werenczak and the other white student teacher, the CCAP member, who is black, said that he thought that the city schools should hire more teachers from historically black colleges.

“This [comment] offended me, as well as the other student teacher in the room,” says Werenczak in FIRE’s latest video. “It just seemed inappropriate considering that the two student teachers happened to be from Syracuse and a not a historically black college.”

So Werenczak took to Facebook to write about the incident.

“Just making sure we’re okay with racism,” wrote Werenczak. “It’s not enough I’m … tutoring in the worst school in the city, I suppose I oughta be black or stay in my own side of town.”

“I was kind of trying to see if my friends or other peers, classmates would have a similar reaction to what I had,” says Werenczak about the reason for his posting the comment.

One reaction Werenczak didn’t see coming was an expulsion from the School of Education for the Facebook comments, which the school described as “unprofessional, offensive, and insensitive.” The school told Werenczak he could avoid expulsion by voluntarily withdrawing, or he could fulfill several requirements in order to gain a chance of “re-admittance.”

When Werenczak fulfilled the requirements and was still not readmitted to the school, he contacted FIRE for help.

“Hours after FIRE took the case public, Syracuse University backed down and I was brought back [into the program] and later graduated.” “

Feds Push Insane New Speech Codes!

Published on May 15, 2013

” “It is so broad that it turns every single student and every single faculty member on campus, at least arguably, into harassers,” warns Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).

He’s talking about sweeping speech codes just imposed by the Departments of Justice and Education on virtually every college campus in the United States.

The new mandate was revealed in a letter from the DOJ and DOE to the University of Montana that states “sexual harassment should be more broadly defined as ‘any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature,” including “verbal conduct.” The new rules apply to all colleges and universities receiving any sort of federal money, including Pell grants, federally backed student loans, and more. The letter contends the conduct in question need not be offensive to an “objectively reasonable person of the same gender in the same situation.” That means that there is effectively no check on what might count as harassment. Course materials, overheard comments, stupid jokes – it’s all potentially actionable.

Lukianoff, the author of Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate, hopes that “this is the last straw that causes the universities themselves to start pushing back against this ridiculous overregulation.”

Student Says F*** Outside of Class, College Nearly Ruins His Career

“I was persecuted by my college for saying the word ‘fuck’ in conversation with another student after class.”

In 2010, Isaac Rosenbloom was a student at Hinds Community College in Mississippi. He was disappointed to receive a grade of “74” on an exam, and after class ended he walked outside and complained to a fellow student, “This grade is going to fuck up my entire GPA.”

After overhearing the comment, Rosenbloom’s professor, Barbara Pyle, berated him for cursing and threatened to send him to detention. Says Rosenbloom, “I countered with, ‘I’m 30 years old. This is college. There is no detention.'”

Rosenbloom didn’t get detention, but the husband and father of two children received something worse: Administrators booted him from Pyle’s class. The punishment jeopardized his financial aid eligibility and could have derailed Rosenbloom’s plans to become a paramedic.

Then FIRE got involved.

“If it wasn’t for FIRE,” says Rosenbloom, “I wouldn’t have a career. I would be delivering pizzas instead of saving lives.”

22 Things to Outlaw Before We Ban Assault Rifles

House-Fire

” 4. Fire

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are an average of 375 deaths each year caused by arson, which is more than the number of people killed by all rifles. We should probably outlaw lighters, matches, and gasoline to fight the problem.”

” By the logic of gun-control proponents, firearms are the problem and not the people misusing them. Therefore, we have a lot more banning to do in addition to outlawing assault rifles, which Joe Biden promised was “just the beginning.”

In 2011, all rifles combined accounted for 323 murders, while shotguns were used in 356 murders; this in a country of 300 million people. So it only stands to reason that if banning rifles and shotguns are an effective way to fight crime, then handguns need to go too: they were used in 6,220 murders. Once citizens allow the premise that objects are responsible for crime and not people, there’s no end to the absurdity of government bans.

For further context, here are some other leading causes of deaths in the United States, according to the CDC: Heart disease: 597,689; Cancer: 574,743; Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 138,080; Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 129,476; Accidents (unintentional injuries): 120,859; Alzheimer’s disease: 83,494; Diabetes: 69,071; Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,476; and Influenza and Pneumonia: 50,097.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, governments have been responsible for over 200 million murders. Simply put, governments cannot be trusted; either in the present or in the future. That is why we have constitutionally limited government that is restricted from disarming the public.”

Christopher Dorner Presumably Dead After Shootout, Fire; Charred Body Awaiting ID

Dorner Shootout 2

” Last night the manhunt for Christopher Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer hellbent on killing any LAPD officer and their family, is believed to have ended in a finale suitable for an action film. But it wasn’t a movie. Dorner’s rampage resulted in four people dead, five people injured and all of the Los Angeles area on edge.

Authorities decked out in full SWAT gear tracked Dorner in the Big Bear area, a ski resort town 80 miles east of LA, and eventually caught up with him. We know very little about what happened because authorities have revealed very few details about the incident as it is currently under investigation.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies working the Big Bear area search for Dorner responded to a reported stolen vehicle by a suspect who looked like Dorner at around 12:20 pm. Shortly after they tracked the suspect down, who fled into the woods and barricaded himself inside a cabin.

Deputies surrounded the building and a gun fight ensued. CBS reported that Dorner opened fire from the cabin with a .50-caliber rifle, which he said he had in what’s being called his manifesto. Two deputies were hit. One died later and the other underwent surgery and will survive his wounds.”

“The odds that Ron Paul would win the Republican Presidential primary this year were always pretty slim. But you wouldn’t
know that from the overheated response one student supporter at Auburn University in Alabama  got when he dared to place a sign supporting Paul’s candidacy in his
dorm room window last fall. Perhaps fearing that a wave of Ron Paul mania would sweep uncontrollably over Auburn,
the sign was only up for three hours before officials demanded that student Eric Philips remove the poster from his window, ostensibly for safety reasons. Philips recounts the shameful saga in a new video
from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), where I work. “

Contrary to what the media/progressives would have us believe , mass murder is hardly a new phenomena .

Brian Palmer of Slate provides a very informative article on the subject . It is a must read.

” The U.S. mass murder rate does not seem to rise or fall with the availability of automatic weapons. It reached its highest level in 1929,
when fully automatic firearms were expensive and mostly limited to soldiers and organized criminals. The rate dipped in the mid-1930s,
staying relatively low before surging again in the 1970s through 1990s. Some criminologists
attribute the late-century spike to the potential for instant notoriety: Beginning with Charles Whitman’s 1966 shooting spree from atop a University of Texas tower, mass murderers became household names. Others point out that the mass murder rate fairly closely tracks the overall homicide rate. In the 2000s, for example, both the mass murder and the homicide rates dropped to their lowest levels
since the 1960s.”
