New York Flags 278 Gun Owners As “Mentally Unstable”

” New York State’s tough new SAFE Act gun control law has flagged 278 gun owners who could lose their weapons because they have been deemed mentally unstable, a new report shows.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged lawmakers to pass the SAFE Act quickly after the 2012 mass shooting at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reported last week that since the law’s enactment, the state has collected 38,718 names in a database of individuals who have been found at-risk for owning guns by psychiatrists and other health professionals.

The paper said when the database was checked against a list of pistol permit holders in the state, there were 278 matches, less than 1 percent.

Monroe County had the most matches at 36, followed by Westchester, 17, Suffolk, 16 and Dutchess, 14. “

New York Gun Owners Face ‘SAFE Act’ Registration Deadline

Noncompliance

New York gun owners who possess firearms classified as assault weapons under a new state law have until the end of Tuesday to register their guns — or face potential criminal charges.

The requirement is part of a provision of New York’s so-called SAFE Act, the package of tighter gun restrictions signed into law  in Albany months after the Sandy Hook school massacre. The law broadened the state’s “assault weapons” ban to cover more kinds of semiautomatic weapons.

Gun owners who lawfully possessed guns that are now on the banned list were allowed to keep their weapons, but had to register them with the state police. They were also given the option of selling their guns to a licensed New York dealer or out-of-state buyer by Jan. 15 of this year.

Those who fail to comply could face a misdemeanor charge or — if they were already disqualified from owning a gun because of a prior criminal conviction or other reason — a potential felony.

Some gun owners say they have no intention of obeying the edict, reports the Daily Gazette of Schenectady:

Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey said he has attended pro-gun rallies in the Capital Region over the past year at which thousands of people from across the state said they do not plan to register their assault weapons.

“ So many people have said they won’t register their guns. I haven’t been told personally, but I’m sure there are some people who have not registered in Fulton County and some who have,” Lorey said. “But I think everyone who plans to register their weapons has already done so.”

Do not expect huge lines at your local State trooper barracks , as Sheriff Lorey says , whoever is going to register has most likely already done so , and we’ll wage it’s damn few .

Since Cuomo Won’t Fight Corruption, U.S. Attorney Must

preet-bharara

” In a move that should send chills down the spine of every crooked pol in Albany, hard-charging Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara has resolved to finish the work of the anti-corruption commission that Gov. Cuomo shuttered in an unsavory backroom deal with the Legislature.

Happy hunting to Bharara, who must now do his darndest to salvage a sweeping Capitol fumigation that never should have been abandoned.

Few people put elected thieves behind bars with the prowess of Bharara. It was, in fact, a flurry of indictments from his office early last year that helped prompt Cuomo to demand reform from the Legislature in the first place — and then to create the Moreland Commission on Public Corruption, a supposedly independent investigative panel, when lawmakers refused.

The panel, crucially, was charged not only with probing outright fraud, but with exposing the routine, corrosive abuses of public trust that are standard practice in Albany while not clearly outside blurry legal lines.

But last week, before the panel could finish the job or issue a final report, Cuomo abruptly pulled the plug in exchange for a handful of ethics reforms. Significant as some of those measures were, it was far too high a price to pay.”

It’s good to someone in NY willing to dig into the pervasive corruption that is Albany , even if Cuomo won’t . Godspeed Sir we are sure that you will achieve much success as the NY political class is a target rich environment , and if there is any NY pol that is deserving of intense scrutiny from an outside party it is Sheldon Silver … as the article says , “Happy Hunting”

” The commission had also subpoenaed records of lawmakers’ murky outside income, including upwards of $500,000 that Assembly boss Sheldon Silver collects from a personal injury firm, and at least $250,000 that Senate chief Dean Skelos is paid by a Long Island firm that also happens to lobby the Legislature. “

Noncompliance: Over 90 Percent Of NY Gun Owners Refusing SAFE Act Registration?

” With the April 15 deadline for gun registration under the SAFE Act fast approaching, estimates indicate over 90 percent of gun owners have yet to comply.

Making matters worse for elected officials–and Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) in particular–is the fact that many law enforcement officers at various levels have openly stated that they will not enforce SAFE Act requirements

According to BearingArms.com, while the state waits for the “registration of 1 million firearms designated as ‘assault weapons’ under the NY SAFE Act,” leaks believed to be coming from within the New York State Police indicate the number registered to date is “as low as…3,000-5,000 firearms.

This is figure is impossible to verify beyond a shadow of doubt because a provision in the SAFE Act forbids law enforcement from releasing registration figures. “

Gun Control Fail: New York’s ‘Assault Weapon’ Registration Is Loudly Miss-Firing As Deadline Nears

Register Nothing NY

”  April 15th, any New Yorker that owns an “assault weapon” is to have registered their gun, per the requirements of the New York SAFE act passed last year. But it’s looking more and more like a tiny percentage of New Yorkers are actually doing it.

While the state of New York has not released actual firearms registration numbers, the rumors of registrations in the 3,000-5,000 range mean that 99% of those affected gun owners are refusing to comply with the law.

Furthermore, gun manufacturers are already responding to the law by designing guns that carefully circumvent its specific requirements.”

Dear Cuomo, I’m A Woman, And I Like Using Guns For Self Defense

Liz Lemery Joy

” Dear Gov. Cuomo,

Well, as you probably figured, I am against your so called Safe Act, which I don’t consider “Safe” at all-… in my opinion it’s actually dangerous. The (Anti-Safe Act– as I like to call it) seeks to, once again, give you all the control (which you love and covet) and limit the citizens of NY in their ability to safely defend themselves. Although, it doesn’t limit you and your peeps… nope. You and your possy retained the freedom to be exempt from the Safe Act…

Your reasoning for exempting retired law enforcement was “They are retired law enforcement officers. They have different training, they have different experience. They are different.”

MmmmHmmmm- yes Gov. (Thug) Cuomo- all retired law enforcement are different? All officers have different training? They are different? Ummm, cough, cough, sputter- sputter- Aren’t they citizens of NY State just like the rest of us? Wouldn’t this be considered elevating some citizens above others? This is actually called inequality. This is not social justice. This is called discrimination.

The definition of inequality: The condition of being unequal. An instance of being unequal. Lack of equality, as of opportunity, treatment, or status. Social or economic disparity.

The definition of discrimination: the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of peopleor things, esp. on the grounds of race, age, or sex.

The definition of social injustice: unfair treatment : a situation in which the rights of a person or a group of people are ignored.

Governor, you and your purposeful mislabeled, deceiving,”Safe Act”- actually favor certain groups of NY citizens over other NY citizens. Not to mention, it limits the ability of people to defend themselves legally against those who don’t obey the law- criminals.”

Remington Arms Moving 2,000+ Jobs From NY To Alabama

Remington1

” Remington first began considering new locations after the New York legislature passed the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act in response to the tragic shootings in Newtown, Conn. In addition to banning magazines that contain more than seven rounds and requiring instant background checks on ammo purchases,  the NY SAFE Act broadened the definition of so-called “assault weapons” to include a wide range of guns, including the Bushmaster, which was being manufactured at Remington’s New York plant.

Almost half the states in the country have made pitches to Remington, included Arizona, Oklahoma, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. But in the end, the company chose Huntsville, Ala.

The initial estimated impact on Alabama’s economy will be roughly $87 million.”

Way to go Andy … it’s not like NY has jobs to spare , especially upstate . This move on Remington’s part is surely he beginning of the end for it’s Ilion operations and one wonders , will Kimber be next ?
