Federal Judge Stalls Obama’s Executive Action On Immigration

” A federal judge in South Texas on Monday temporarily blocked President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration, giving a coalition of 26 states time to pursue a lawsuit that aims to permanently stop the orders.

U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen’s decision comes after a hearing in Brownsville in January and puts on hold Obama’s orders that could spare as many as five million people who are in the U.S. illegally from deportation.

Hanen wrote in a memorandum accompanying his order that the lawsuit should go forward and that without a preliminary injunction the states will “suffer irreparable harm in this case.”

” The genie would be impossible to put back into the bottle,” he wrote, adding that he agreed with the plaintiffs’ argument that legalizing the presence of millions of people is a “virtually irreversible” action.”

Gun-Friendly Texas Prepares To Roll Back Ban On Open Carry Of Firearms

” Long depicted as the capital of American gun culture, Texas is actually one of the few states to ban outright the open carrying of handguns.

That could change in 2015, when the Republican-dominated state legislature and governor-elect Greg Abbott are expected to push for expanded gun rights.

“ If open carry is good enough for Massachusetts, it’s good enough for the state of Texas,” Abbott said the day after his election, last month.

If Texas, which allows concealed handguns, embraces open carry – rolling back a 140-year ban – it would be the largest state to have done so.

Open carry drew wide support in the 2014 statewide election, and at least six bills have been filed for the upcoming session, which starts in January. Abbott has pledged to sign one into law if sent to his desk.

Coni Ross, a 63-year-old rancher in Blanco, carries a handgun in her purse for personal protection and said she would like the option to carry it openly on her belt if she could. She already does when she is on her ranch and feels comfortable with her gun by her side.

“ In one-and-a-half seconds, a man can run 25ft with a knife in his hands and stab you before you get your gun out,” Ross said. “If your weapon is concealed you’re dead.” “

New Texas Governor Says He’ll Sign Open Carry Bill

” The Lone Star State’s new governor-elect, Greg Abbott (R), fresh from his landslide victory, promised that he would sign an open-carry bill into law if it reaches his desk.

Abbott, former state attorney general, bested his Democratic opponent Wendy Davis this week and is slated to take office in 2015. A repeated promise he had made while campaigning for his new job in Austin would be to approve an open carry bill if given the opportunity.

“ Throughout the campaign I announced my support for open carry in Texas,” Abbott told the San Antonio Express-News.  “If an open carry bill is passed by the House and Senate and arrives at my desk I will sign it into law.”

Citing that many states already have similar legislation enacted, his should not be an exception, saying, “If open carry is good enough for Massachusetts, it’s good enough for the state of Texas.”

Since the 19th century, it has been illegal for Texans to carry modern handguns outside of their home, which was only modified in 1995 when the state adopted a concealed carry statute. This leaves lawful gun owners in the state who do not carry concealed with a permit the option of either arming themselves with a primitive black-powder handgun or a long arm such as a rifle or shotgun.”

Wheelchair Ad Roils Texas Gov. Race

” Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis’ latest television ad directly references gubernatorial rival Greg Abbott’s partial paralysis — including the image of an empty wheelchair — to charge the Republican with hypocrisy.

The spot says Abbott filed a lawsuit following the accident that led to his paralysis, but then worked to limit liability to other accident victims. The Abbott campaign calls the ad a “historic low.”

Davis has repeatedly attacked Abbott as a state government insider as she attempts to make up a significant deficit in the polls. A Texas Lyceum survey released earlier this month found Abbott leading Davis 49 percent to 40 percent. “

‘Abortion Barbie’ Posters Depicting Wendy Davis As A Pregnant Barbie Doll Appear In LA

” Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis got a rude welcome by supporters of Republican opponent Greg Abbott in advance of a Los Angeles fundraiser — life-sized posters depicting her as “Abortion Barbie.” The posters showed Davis’ face on a scantily clad barbie doll with a plastic baby in her belly. The Davis campaign called on Abbott to denounce the posters. Abbott and Davis face each other in the race for Texas governor.

Abbott campaign spokesman Matt Hirsch said: “It’s not affiliated with our campaign and we find it appalling.” The campaign said it didn’t know who put up the posters.”

” Davis campaign spokesman Zac Petkanas called the posters offensive and said they demonstrate that the Abbott campaign is out of touch with women. “This is just another in a long line of offensive actions and comments by Greg Abbott in an attempt to demean Wendy Davis and women across Texas.” Last year, Abbott thanked a supporter who called Davis “retard Barbie” on Twitter.”

” Abbott supporter Kathryn Stuard of Midland donated to conservative street artist Leonard Sabo to help create the poster. The amount was not disclosed. Stuard is a conservative blogger who promoted her involvement in producing the poster on her Twitter site, where she describes herself as a patriot who likes “to play tennis and shoot guns. But not at the same time.” She said the Abbott campaign was not involved. “I’m conservative. I love my country. I want my country back to constitutional values. If we’re going to have abortion, can’t they just be safe?” The San Antonio Express-News first reported Stuard donated to help produce the poster. Sabo earlier produced a poster of a shirtless, tattooed Ted Cruz with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, which were posted around Los Angeles in advance of a Cruz appearance in Hollywood in March.”

Readers can buy their own signed copies of “Abortion Barbie” here at Sabo’s website . Also available from the artist are T-shirts with the famous high quality Ted Cruz “Blacklisted & Loving It” image .

Greg Abbott’s Response To Wendy Davis Supporters Mocking His Wheelchair Will Make You Like Him Even More

” Mouths were agape when secret video footage surfaced of Wendy Davis supporters campaigning for Battleground Texas, all while making fun of Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s use of a wheelchair.

Although the supporters were caught mocking Abbott’s physicality and admitting voter fraud, those filmed vehemently deny the video’s validity.

Instead of pointing out the disgraceful behavior of his opponent’s following, Abbott responded to the ordeal by turning the focus from his disability to something much more relevant to his political campaign.

In an interview with Megyn Kelly of FOX News, Abbott articulated, “Denigrating the disabled is unworthy of Texas….What Texans really look at is the depth of character. There’s a reason why I have been elected statewide in Texas five different times. That’s because Texans know I have the quality and depth of character to represent their families and their values.” “

Greg Abbott Reacts To Video Showing Battleground Texas Activists Mocking His Disability (Update: Davis Reacts)

” Earlier this afternoon, James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas released a video showing Battleground Texas activists mocking him and condoning voter fraud. In the video, an attorney and voter registrar for the group, which is supporting Democrat Wendy Davis’ run for governor of Texas, is seen making a joke about the fact that Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is confined to a wheelchair. Abbott is the presumed Republican nominee for governor.

Today, the Abbott campaign released a statement on the video.”

Eleven State AGs Protest ObamaCare “Fixes” As “Flatly Illegal”

” Alternate headline: Hot Air readers get results! In our year-end poll, readers chose as the most underreported story of 2013 the lawlessness of the Obama administration in its handling of ObamaCare. Eleven state Attorneys General share that opinion — and started off the year attempting to correct it. Led by Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia (no relation), the consortium of AGs protested the changes in a letter to Kathleen Sebelius (via Instapundit):

The attorneys general specifically criticize President Obama’s executive action that allowed insurance companies to keep offering health plans that had been canceled for not meeting ObamaCare’s more rigorous standards.

We support allowing citizens to keep their health insurance coverage, but the only way to fix this problem-ridden law is to enact changes lawfully: through Congressional action,” the attorneys general wrote in a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “The illegal actions by this administration must stop.”

They say the healthcare fix was “flatly illegal under federal constitutional and statutory law.” “

Texas Officials, Activists to Holder on Voter ID: If It’s War You Want, It’s War You’ve Got

” Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is responding quickly and forcefully to Obama Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision torope Texas back into the Voting Rights Act. The US Supreme Court just struck part of that law down.

The facts are on Abbott’s side. Texas specifically modeled its voter ID law on Indiana’s. That law has already been taken all the way to the US Supreme Court and was upheld. The Texas law enjoys widespread support across all ethnicities in the state. Only the Texas Democrat Party and its allies oppose it.

The Obama administration has been very consistent about opposing laws that buttress election security, and it has been very consistent about punishing states that don’t get in line with Obama’s radical agenda. Holder’s lawsuit is just another example of both.”

Y’all Come To Texas, State Official Tells New York Gun Owners

” Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has a message for New York gun owners: Come to Texas, and bring your guns with you.

“Texas is better than New York, and New York just gave us another excuse to say that,” Abbott, a Republican, said on Thursday, after ads extolling Texas appeared on several media websites.

One ad says in classic Western script: “WANTED: Law abiding New York gun owners seeking lower taxes and greater opportunities.”

Clicking on the ad leads to a Facebook page touting the virtues of Texas, including the fact that the state has no income tax so “you’ll be able to keep more of what you earn and use that extra money to buy more ammo.” ”
