U.S. Flies B-52s Into China’s Expanded Air Defense Zone

Guam-Senkaku

” Two long-range American bombers have conducted what Pentagon officials described Tuesday as a routine training mission through international airspace recently claimed by China as its “air defense identification zone.”

The Chinese government said Saturday that it has the right to identify, monitor and possibly take military action against aircraft that enter the area, which includes sea and islands also claimed by Japan. The claim threatens to escalate an already tense dispute over some of the maritime territory.”

“American officials said the pair of B-52s carried out a mission that had been planned long in advance of the Chinese announcement last weekend, and that the United States military would continue to assert its right to fly through what it regards as international airspace.

Pentagon officials said the two bombers made a round-trip flight from Guam, passing through a zone that covers sea and islands that are the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Japan and China.”

The B-52 sortie could certainly be considered provocative by some and as difficult as it is to find common ground with out illustrious leader on most matters both domestic and foreign , we strongly agree with the move as a way to quickly and firmly address the issue of China trying to claim sovereignty where no rightful claim exists .

While not intending to take sides on the issue of ownership of the disputed island chain , the fact remains that the sky above them is universally recognized as , and guided by,  the traditional rules of international airspace . This was an absolutely necessary flight that couldn’t have been flown soon enough . The need to nip Chinese arrogance in the bud is imperative and hopefully the sortie was seen as the shot across the bows that Beijing so sorely needed .

Of course a more cynical individual (who me ?) might think that this was just the latest squirrel sighting , but let us give Dear Leader the benefit of the doubt a assume he has finally grown a pair … at least until Michelle and Valerie get out the scissors .

Russian Bombers Buzz U.S. Territory — Again

” Russian strategic bombers conducted flights near the U.S. defense zone close to northern Alaska and the Aleutian Islands last week, Moscow’s latest incident of nuclear saber-rattling against the United States, according to defense and military officials.

Two Bear H nuclear-capable bombers were detected flying into the military’s Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone near the Aleutians, where a strategic-missile-defense radar is located, and along Alaska’s North Slope by the Arctic and Chukchi seas on April 28 and 29, military officials told the Washington Free Beacon.

Lt. Cmdr. Bill Lewis, a spokesman with the U.S. Northern Command, confirmed a U.S. fighter intercept of the bombers but declined to provide details.

“Two U.S. F-22’s from Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, were launched and visually identified Russian aircraft on the night of April 28, as the Russian air force flew standard out-of-area flights near Alaska,” Lt. Cmdr. Lewis said. The bombers did not enter U.S. airspace, he said.

What ever happened to that new beginning in our relations with the Russians and all of that talk of “Smart Diplomacy” ?

” It was the fifth incident of Russian strategic bombers flying against the United States since June, when bombers were intercepted near Alaska during a large-scale strategic nuclear exercise that Russian military officials said involved practice strikes against U.S. missile defense sites in Alaska.

Less than a month later, on July 4, two more Bears flew the closest to the Northern California coast that Russian aircraft have flown since the days of the Cold War.

Then in February, two Bears circled Guam, a U.S. territory and key military hub in the Pacific. Additionally, Backfire strategic bombers flew simulated strikes against U.S. missile defenses and bases in Japan last month.”

Putin must have forgotten Obama’s promise to have more “leeway” after the election .

China Conducts Live-Fire Military Drills Near North Korean Border

” China’s military and defense ministry on Sunday confirmed that military forces in a border region near North Korea conducted live-fire drills amid tensions between North Korea and the United States.

The Pentagon, meanwhile, canceled a planned test launch of a Minuteman III ballistic missile to avoid further upsetting ties with North Korea.

Intelligence sources said signs continue to indicate that North Korea is planning to conduct a flight test soon of its intermediate-range Musudan missile that has enough range to reach Guam.

Two Musudan missiles have been readied and the flight test may take place around April 15, the anniversary of the birth of the late leader Kim Il Sung, grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un.

Additionally, North Korea may conduct another underground nuclear test in the coming days, the sources said, based on intelligence indicators of increased activity at North Korea’s northern nuclear testing facility.”

This Is How Far North Korea’s Missiles Can Reach

” North Korea on Friday reportedly moved two mobile missiles believed to be of intermediate range to the country’s east coast, potentially putting them within striking distance of Japan and American bases in Guam. If the reports are accurate, it’s the latest escalation in an increasingly tense situation which may result in a military conflict.

North Korea’s threatening language towards South Korea and the United States is becoming increasingly bellicose, going so far as to approve the use of nuclear weapons should a military conflict break out on the Korean peninsula. Propaganda videos from North Korea have claimed the country could turn Seoul, Washington and other cities into a “sea of flames” — but North Korea is notorious for outlandish provocations that simply aren’t supported by reality.

It’s important to note, however, that there’s doubt as to whether North Korea possesses nuclear weapons small enough to place atop a missile or if it would place one of their few nuclear weapons atop one of its often less-than-reliable missiles. So how far can North Korea’s missiles really reach? This chart, based on data from the BBC, shows the estimated reach of North Korea’s various projectiles.”

North Korea Ratifies Nuclear Strike Against The U.S.

” In the latest round of threats coming out of North Korea, it has been reported that North Korean officials have confirmed that they have ratified plans to launch military strikes against the US, including nuclear attacks.

This ratification comes on the heels of news last week that the leadership of North Korea has officially declared war on the United States.

In response to the latest actions of the North Korean government, Reuters reports that the United States has begun to deploy missile defense systems in Guam. Guam and Hawaii, which are territories of the United States, have been specifically mentioned as targets of the North Korean regime. Though the likelihood of North Korean missiles being able to hit Guam and Hawaii are quite low, AFP points out that U.S. military bases in Japan and South Korea are within range of North Korean weaponry and face a very real risk of an attack.”

North Korea Threatens To Attack US Bases In Okinawa, Guam

” “The United States is advised not to forget that our precision target tools have within their range the Anderson Air Force base on Guam where the B-52 takes off, as well as the Japanese mainland where nuclear powered submarines are deployed and the navy bases on Okinawa,” the North Korean command spokesman was quoted as saying by KCNA news agency.

The air raid alert was issued at 9:32 am local time (00:32 am GMT) with military units and civilians told to take cover, Korean Central Television said.”

Russian Nuclear Bombers Circle Guam

” Two Russian nuclear-armed bombers circled the western Pacific island of Guam this week in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing strategic assertiveness toward the United States.

The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address.

Air Force Capt. Kim Bender, a spokeswoman for the Pacific Air Force in Hawaii, confirmed the incident to the Washington Free Beacon and said Air Force F-15 jets based on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, “scrambled and responded to the aircraft.”

John Bolton, former U.N. ambassador and former State Department international security undersecretary, said the Russian bomber flights appear to be part of an increasingly threatening strategic posture in response to Obama administration anti-nuclear policies.

“Every day brings new evidence that Obama’s ideological obsession with dismantling our nuclear deterrent is dangerous,” Bolton said. “Our national security is in danger of slipping off the national agenda even as the threats grow.”

Defense officials said the bombers tracked over Guam were likely equipped with six Kh-55 or Kh-55SM cruise missiles that can hit targets up to 1,800 miles away with either a high-explosive warhead or a 200-kiloton nuclear warhead.”
