Sheriffs Think Gun Laws Are Waste of Time

” One of the leading talking points for those advocating more gun laws has been the support many such measures have gotten from law enforcement personnel. As a rule, police officers generally prefer working in environments where the populace is unarmed. That’s understandable since, at least in theory, fewer guns ought to make it safer for cops to do their jobs. But just as the consensus about the need for more gun control in urban sectors breaks down once you leave the suburbs and head into the exurbs and rural areas, the same might be said about peacekeepers. As the New York Times reports today in a front-page feature, a growing number of county sheriffs are not only saying they think the latest wave of state laws passed in the wake of last year’s Newtown massacre are wrongheaded or unnecessary. They’re also saying they won’t enforce them because they are unconstitutional or a waste of time.

Now , a year later the Old Grey Lady finally catches wind of the average Sheriff’s position ?  That’s some investigatory staff they’ve got there . Good thing we don’t need to rely on those resourceless , pajama-clad , basement-dwelling bloggers for timely reports of the news .

” This is happening not only in rural Colorado, which has become the cutting edge of the gun debate, but also in upstate New York, where Governor Andrew Cuomo made new laws restricting firearms and ammunition magazines a priority in 2013 as well as in Florida and California. The trend stems in part from pro-gun sentiment. But just as important to the discussion is the notion that outside of cities, laws whose sole aim is to make it harder to legally possess weapons are seen as vague, unenforceable, and burden already overworked law enforcement officials with busywork. Many sheriffs simply say they’ve had enough and even if their attempts to nullify legislation on constitutional grounds are unlikely to succeed, their protests illustrate the growing discontent about legislation that is out of touch with the culture of rural America.”

Via ReasonTV Comes This Discussion Of Guns And Mental Illness

Published on Nov 19, 2013

” In the wake of any mass shooting, there’s a predictable and justified burst of public outrage and sorrow followed by a series of “do something now” legislative proposals meant to prevent similar tragedies from ever occurring again.

Depending on the political leanings of the politician or media figure offering the solution, the proposal often rests upon one of these twin assumptions: We must rid the world of the wrong kinds of weapons (i.e., “assault weapons”), or, we must keep guns away from the wrong kinds of people (i.e., “crazy people”).

“How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame from a national media machine that rewards them with wall-to-wall attention and a sense of identity that they crave, while provoking others to try to make their mark?” asked Wayne LaPierre, official lightning rod of the National Rifle Association, in the wake of the Sandy Hook elementary shooting. “A dozen more killers, a hundred more? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation’s refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill?”

Even the nation’s premier gun lobby believes keeping guns away from the mentally ill is a good idea. It’s a sensible-sounding proposal, a logical precaution. But some forensic psychiatrists, whose jobs include the task of identifying potentially violent individuals, say that targeting the mentally ill isn’t as simple as it sounds.

Watch the Reason TV video above, “The Truth About Mental Illness and Guns,” to hear more about flawed gun control policies and for the full story behind the Phillips’ gun confiscation experience.

Approximately 7:30 minutes. Produced by Zach Weissmueller. Shot by Tracy Oppenheimer, Will Neff, and Weissmueller.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s New Gun-Control Law Targets Gun Makers

If the rumblings are to be believed , Remington Arms , New York state’s oldest gun manufacturer , is finally getting ready to head for a more amenable work environment .

” ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo’s tough new gun law has put a target on the state’s gun makers.

Cities, counties and states from across the country have been making lucrative pitches to New York’s firearms companies, urging them to relocate. Their argument: They have a gun-friendly atmosphere, and New York does not.

“They receive solicitations . . . on almost a daily basis,” said Lawrence Kean, senior vice president and general counsel of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade group.

“CEOs have told me they could basically move their factories for free.”

Cuomo pushed his new gun law through the Legislature a month after the deadly shooting rampage in Newtown, Conn. The law broadened the definition of what is considered a banned assault weapon, and it reduced the size of permissible gun magazines to seven rounds, from 10.

Since then, the state’s remaining firearms companies, including major employers like Remington Arms in upstate Ilion and Kimber Manufacturing in Yonkers, have been wooed by officials from places including South Carolina and Texas.”

The move can’t come soon enough for us . Any manufacturer whose livelihood is based on the manufacture and sale of a product(s) that in the state in which they reside and pay taxes has been banned should take their business elsewhere as soon as humanly possible . Here’s to hoping that both Kimber and Remington see that things will only get worse in NY , which has become an embarrassment to the Union , the Founders and freedom lovers everywhere .

Obama Revitalizes His Demonization Of Law-Abiding Gun Owners

” Once again, President Obama is exploiting the tragic deaths from a mass shooting to push his political agenda to control guns. This time, he escalates the rhetoric by blaming Second Amendment advocates for criminals’ acts.

Referring to Monday’s tragic shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, along with the mass murders in Newtown and Aurora in 2012, Tucson in 2011 and shootings in Chicago, he said: “As long as there are those who fight to make it as easy as possible for dangerous people to get their hands on a gun, then we’ve got to work as hard as possible for the sake of our children. We’ve got to be ones who are willing to do more work to make it harder.”

So who is fighting to make it easy for criminals to get guns?

Of course he is referring to the 5 million members of the National Rifle Association. He did the same thing in April after his gun control agenda failed to get 60 votes in the Senate. In the Rose Garden, he blamed the lack of support on the “gun lobby” lying about the legislation, which “intimidated a lot of senators.”

Contrary to the president’s accusations, the NRA long has lobbied for better mental health treatment and strengthening the background check system.”

Starbucks Asks Customers Not To Bring Guns Into Outlets

” The coffee chain Starbucks has asked its customers in the US to stop bringing guns into its outlets.

Starbucks has not imposed a ban, but says guns “should not be part of the Starbucks experience”.

The firm has recently become a focus for the pro- and anti-gun lobby, with supporters of the right to carry arms holding a Starbucks Appreciation Day.

But it said it wanted to give customers “a safe and comfortable respite from the concerns of daily life”.

Starbucks has a policy of defaulting to local laws when it comes to whether people can take guns into its 7,000 US outlets.

The company’s stance has won support from the pro-gun lobby, and in August campaigners staged an appreciation day at several outlets.”

NEW REPUBLIC CLAIMS NRA POWER DIMINISHED, GUN OWNERSHIP DECLINING

” The New Republic contends that while the group has “real clout,” its power “has been more a matter of entrenched wisdom than actual fact.” In other words, the NRA only looks strong because it has long been assumed strong. But in reality, individuals with an “F rating” from the NRA have won Senate and gubernatorial seats recently, demonstrating that the NRA isn’t really that influential after all.

The New Republic also claims an alleged decline in ownership of firearms proves the gun lobby is losing. In reality, however, gun ownership is skyrocketing, and not just with gun owners whom the mainstream media loves to depict as backwoods hayseed: women from all walks of life and male first-time gun owners are also increasing.

From the beginning of 2009 through May 3, there were 73,219,367 background checks for gun purchases. This number only indicates the number of purchasers, not the number of guns purchased. The number of guns purchased could have been two or three times that number. The years 2011 and 2012 both saw the highest number of background checks of any year on record; already 2013 is on pace to have the highest number of background checks ever.”

KOKESH WANTS MARCH ON WASHINGTON WITH LOADED WEAPONS

” Adam Kokesh is a self-promoting stunt weasel and he has been dancing around with the authorities for quite a while. So let’s do the bottom line up front, this is the dumbest f***ing idea I have heard of in years, perhaps ever.

Libertarian activist and radio host Adam Kokesh is hoping to get 1,000 people to march on Washington on July 4 — armed with loaded rifles. The plan, launched with a Facebook group today, is to gather on the Virginia side of the Potomac, where gun laws are lax, and then march across the bridge with loaded rifles slung over their shoulders into the District, where openly carrying weapons is generally prohibited.”

After The Obama Surge: A New Rush On Gun Stores

” Gun buyers have long demonstrated a tendency to stock up on weapons and ammunition ahead of possible changes to gun laws, and a so-called “Obama surge” in gun sales kicked off in the lead-up to Barack Obama’s first election victory in 2008.

There was a similar pick up in 2012 as a second Obama victory looked likely, and another rush on stores when it became clear the Obama administration would push for tighter gun control laws in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting last December.

In fact, the rush beginning in December has been high even by historic standards: the FBI conducted just under 2.8 million background checks on prospective gun buyers in December 2012, the highest number in any single month since records begin in November 1998.  That’s more than triple the number it was running in in December 2002.

And the rush has continued through 2013 so far. Here’s the number of monthly background checks in the first three months of each year since 1998. This year looks set to be the busiest ever.”

Attention, Red State Knuckle Draggers: Surrender

” You have to give this execrable Bloomberg editorial from earlier today points for candor:

The struggle to enact [the Manchin-Toomey plan] turned uphill this week, with nearly all Senate Republicans opposing it and even a few red-state Democrats running for cover. The proposal’s demise, in a 54-46 vote, is a testament to legislators’ continuing fear of the gun lobby. It also illuminates a political equation that grows more unbalanced, especially in the Senate, every year. The votes of Wyoming’s two senators, representing 580,000 citizens, effectively cancel the votes of California’s two senators, representing 38 million. The votes of Illinois, with a population of almost 13 million, are voided by those of Alaska, with little more than 700,000.

This is a problem for sensible gun legislation. It is also a problem for American democracy. If the nation’s laws fail to represent the views of the overwhelming majority of its people, representative democracy becomes a shallow and unsustainable exercise.

Maybe it’s just the editor in me, but do we generally use the word “unsustainable” for something that’s been functioning for well over two centuries?

Now, it’s not quite as bad as it sounds. This turns out to be an argument for abolishing the filibuster, not doing away with the Senate as we know it (not that we need any further proof that the leftwouldn’t shed a single tear over the latter proposal). The reason? You damn rubes won’t put down the boomsticks:”

HIGH COURT REJECTS CHALLENGE TO NY GUN LAW

” The Supreme Court is staying out of the gun debate for now.

The justices on Monday declined to hear a challenge to a strict New York law that makes it difficult for residents to get a license to carry a concealed handgun in public.

The court did not comment in turning away an appeal from five state residents and the Second Amendment Foundation. Their lawsuit also drew support from the National Rifle Association and 20 states.”

Poll: Law Enforcement Officers Overwhelmingly Support Gun Rights and Oppose New Gun Control

” According to a survey released by PoliceOne.com of over 15,000 retired and active duty officers it is clear that the law enforcement community in the US strongly supports the gun rights of private citizens.

Based on the findings it does not look like most officers support any new gun legislation currently being proposed, saying that it would do little to promote officer safety or reduce crime rates.

This is in direct contrast to many anti gun politicians statements that a majority of police officers support their gun control initiatives in the interest of improving “officer safety”.

Here are the key findings from the survey:

  • 99 percent said policies other than an “assault weapons” ban are most important to prevent mass shootings.
  • Almost 96 percent said that a ban on standard capacity magazines would not reduce violent crime.”

NY Gun Confiscation Underway – Citizens Told To Turn In Pistol Owner ID & Firearms

” Remember all those who denied that firearms confiscation as a result of New York’s new gun laws was too “insane” to even consider?

That it was strictly in the realm of paranoid conspiracy theorists and the “it cant happen here crowd”?

There’s just one huge problem it is happening now in New York State!
It seems those that tried desperately to warn of such an insidious plot had hit the bullseye with their warnings after all. News came from multiple NY State based firearms enthusiast websites late Friday that confiscations of Pistol Owner ID Cards, as well as firearms and accessories has commenced in NY under the provisions of the horribly flawed, draconian and blatantly unconstitutional NY SAFE Act.

Those folks having their weapons and FID cards confiscated  have been discovered to have been prescribed multiple different types of psychotropic drugs, such as those for Depression or Anxiety. These are known as SSRI ( Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) class drugs and have the potential to cause serious and adverse side effects, something I wrote about extensively last week in an article that went viral in days and caused multiple Anti Gun and Progressive News Groups to initiate a concentrated denial of service hacker attack against Ammoland Shooting Sports News (see Daily KOS ” Keeping Track Of The RKBA Crowd” http://tiny.cc/ug67uw),  in an effort to keep the information from the public.

From NY http://tiny.cc/nyfirearms

“John Doe, an upstanding professional with no outstanding criminal convictions and no history of violent action received a letter from the Pistol Permit Department informing him that his license was immediately revoked upon information that he was seeing a therapist for anxiety and had been prescribed an anxiety drug. He was never suicidal, never violent, and has no criminal history. The New York State Department of Health is apparently conducting a search of medical records to determine who is being treated for anxiety drugs and using this as a basis for handgun license revocation.

Those are the facts. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Now, before anyone trots out the old saw about how this is nothing more then a paranoid, unsubstantiated rumor on a “gun nuts” internet forum. I spoke to the Attorney of Record in this matter on the phone this morning and he confirmed that the above snippet is accurate and these cases are happening!

James Tresmond Esq confirmed in our conversation that the above mentioned case is occurring in Erie County NY, it is his client that has been effected, and as yet unknown sources have seen fit to take it upon themselves to share confidential medical records with NY State Officials without authorization, a massive HIPPA violation.”

Gun Owners Of America: For When The NRA Hasn’t ‘Gone Far Enough’

” Gun Owners of America has far fewer members and much less money than the better-known NRA, but the group is emerging as an influential voice in Washington.

A gun rights group working feverishly to prevent the passage of several gun control bills in Congress has apparently caught the ear of several lawmakers. No, it’s not the National Rifle Association.

Gun Owners of America, a lobbying organization that’s been around since 1975, doesn’t get nearly as much media attention as the larger, better-funded and better-known NRA, but its voice is increasingly being heard on Capitol Hill.

Gun Owners of America’s mission is to “preserve and defend the Second Amendment rights of gun owners.” It has about 300,000 dues-paying members, compared with 5 million for the NRA. The group spent $1.3 million last year to lobby Congress, while the NRA spent nearly $3 million, according to the Times.

Pratt told MSN News his group is “totally separate” from, and often at odds with, the NRA.

GOA makes it a point to differentiate itself from the larger NRA. Pratt told the Times that part of the group’s mission is to stay on top of the NRA “when we don’t think they’ve gone far enough.”

Ron Paul, the libertarian congressman from Texas, has called the GOA “the only no-compromise gun lobby in America.”

Pratt told MSN News: “The reason we why we oppose the background checks, the measure currently at the top of the wish list of other side, is that all evidence points to it becoming a national gun registry.”

Leaked Department Of Justice Memo Calls For Gun Ban And Registration

” In order for gun checks to have any kind of effect at stopping crime, according to the memo, a system of gun registration would have to be implemented, and would only work if it were “massive and coupled with a ban.” Gun rights supporters say that gun registration is the first step towards confiscation.

According to the NRA, the memo “shows that the administration ‘believes that a gun ban will not work without mandatory gun confiscation’ and thinks universal background checks ‘won’t work without requiring national gun registration’ — ideas the president has not proposed or expressed support for,” Fram writes.”

Gun Control Advocates & Liberal Media Bias Evident in Coverage of Mass Shootings

” When you look at recent mass shootings that have occurred recently there is one specific incident that is very rarely if ever mentioned by the liberal media and Gun Control advocates.

The Ft. Hood Shooting is never cited or discussed or even mentioned by the Anti’s and Gun grabbers like Bloomberg, Schumer, Boxer, Feinstein, McCarthy or Cuomo. They only cite the TucsonAurora and Sandy Hook events as reason to restrict law abiding citizens their rights. WHY?

One must make a few assumptions to uncover why they rarely if ever cite the Ft. Hood mass shooting in their quest to deny law abiding citizens their 2nd Amendment rights.

  1. It has not received the attention nor coverage that other mass shooting have received because it occurred on a military installation while Obama was the Commander in Chief.

  2. It has not received the attention nor coverage that other mass shooting have received because the perpetrator was Muslim and it is not politically correct because the President himself sympathizes with the Muslim plight across the world.

  3. It has not received the attention nor coverage that other mass shooting have received because the victims were military personnel and they just don’t have the same impact as civilians and children for good demagoguery.”
