The 10 Biggest Political Gaffes Of 2013

” 2013 has been a big year in U.S. politics. President Obama, who was inaugurated in January for his second term, finally implemented his signature health care legislation. Later in the year, the federal government shut down due to a funding war largely over that same reform. But it’s also been a huge year for politicians doing and saying some truly embarrassing things. Even without the constant media attention from a presidential campaign like last year’s, politicians still managed to embarass themselves in some ridiculous ways.

Here is one example from IBD’s selection .

” Biden Calls the Wrong Man Twice

Vice President Joe Biden is no stranger to gaffes, so this may be less of a “big f*cking deal” than other moments, but it’s embarrassing all the same. When Biden saw that Democratic candidate Marty Walsh had been elected mayor of Boston in November, the vice president excitedly called him up. “You son of a gun, Marty!” Biden reportedly said. “You did it!” Except he was talking to the wrong Marty Walsh. As it turns out, Biden called up another Marty Walsh who formerly worked for Ted Kennedy and now heads a government relations firm. After receiving the right number from the wrong Marty, Biden reportedly misdialed his phone and left a congratulatory voicemail to a woman named Toni. “

Is Obama Taking America ‘Forward’ Into The Failed Past?

” More is involved than this year’s political battles. The word “forward” has been a political battle cry on the left for more than a century. It has been almost as widely used as the left’s other favorite word, “equality,” which goes back more than two centuries.

The seductive notion of economic equality has appealed to many people. The pilgrims started out with the idea of equal sharing. The colony of Georgia began with very similar ideas. In the Midwest, Britain’s Robert Owen — who coined the term “socialism” — set up colonies based on communal living and economic equality.

What these idealistic experiments all had in common was that they failed. “

… This Is What A Real Recovery Looks Like

” A Washington, D.C., hip-hop station host asked Michelle to “in your words, tell us what you think the state of the union is in right now?” “

Her answer: “I mean, we are seeing right now that we are in the midst of a huge recovery. Right? Because of what this president has done.”

We wholeheartedly agree with the first lady that the current state of the economy is the result of “what this president has done.”

But to call Obama’s recovery — which started just five months after he took office and is now in its 40th month — “huge” shows just how detached from reality the White House has become. “

Could Obama Lose Home State Of Illinois?

” When an incumbent Democratic president is virtually tied in a congressional district he carried by high double digits in 2008, and is losing in the suburbs of his hometown, there could be trouble brewing.

In August, a poll by the Joliet, Ill.-based polling firm of McKeon and Associates, found President Obama leading challenger Mitt Romney in Cook County, which includes Chicago and its suburbs, by a 12-point margin 49-37.

That would seem to be a comfortable edge, but it is significantly smaller than traditional margins needed to outweigh the more Republican downstate vote.

“He has to come out of Cook County with a big lead or he’s gonna have problems downstate,” explained McKeon, who said that based on the numbers he’s seen, Obama polled only in the 40s in downstate Illinois. “

U.S. Has 60 Times More Than Obama Claims

” But the figure Obama uses — proved oil reserves — vastly undercounts how much oil the U.S. actually contains. In fact, far from being oil-poor, the country is awash in vast quantities — enough to meet all the country’s oil needs for hundreds of years.

The U.S. has 22.3 billion barrels of proved reserves, a little less than 2% of the entire world’s proved reserves, according to the Energy Information Administration. But as the EIA explains, proved reserves “are a small subset of recoverable resources,” because they only count oil that companies are currently drilling for in existing fields.”

From John Merline

“Premiums for employer-provided family coverage rose $3,065 — 24% — from 2008 to 2012, the Kaiser survey found. Even if you start counting in 2009, premiums have climbed $2,370.

What’s more, premiums climbed faster in Obama’s four years than they did in the previous four under President Bush, the survey data show.”

   ” Last week, the Obama
campaign started selling a refashioned American flag with its logo replacing the stars, and then urged Americans to pledge
allegiance to Barack. Did we just wake up in Mao’s China?

The flag print, designed especially for the campaign by a pair of obviously incredibly hip artists, tries to improve the musty look
of Old Glory by taking out a few stripes and swapping the star field for the Obama “O” logo. The campaign is selling the limited
edition prints for just $35.

Amazingly, this isn’t the first time the American flag has been desecrated to better suit Obama sycophants. “

Obama’s Campaign of Lies Reaches
Despicable Low

” Unable to run on his record, President Hope-and-Change has built a campaign based entirely on scurrilous lies about Mitt Romney.
But the latest reaches a historic, despicable low. That ad features a man claiming that after Bain
Capital closed his steel plant, he lost his job and his insurance, and shortly thereafter his wife died of cancer. “

Obama stiffs California city $35,000 while Romney pays his bill

” The bill is already nearly two months overdue. The Democratic National Committee and Secret
Service are giving the city the old “Talk to them,No, talk to them” routine that would immediately get any real business operation on
the Better Business Bureau’s “Do Not Hire Again” list. “

Dear Leader Beclowns Himself

“They said, ‘Sammy, who’s that?’ And he said, ‘That’s Barack Obama.’ ‘And what does Barack Obama do?’ And the boy thinks for a second and
he says, ‘He approves this message.'”

IBD catches more of Obama’s lies .

” “The truth is,” Obama says, “we tried (that) for almost a decade, and it didn’t work.”

Bush-era tax cuts and deregulation, he argues “resulted in the most sluggish job growth in
decades” along with “rising inequality, surpluses turned into deficits, culminating in the worst
economic crisis in our lifetimes.”
There’s just one problem. Obama’s got his history wrong.

First, Bush was no big deregulator. “

This administration MUST go ASAP if we are to attain any vestige of the liberties the Founders risked so much for .

The great American Experiment is in imminent peril .

” Second Amendment : The United Nations is putting the finishing touches on an Arms Trade
Treaty that transcends borders and may even trample our Constitutional right to bear arms.
Every indication is that the president will sign it.

Like the New Start and Law of the Sea treaties before it, as well as the Kyoto Protocol and Agenda 21, the Arms Trade Treaty being finalized at the U.N. this month is one of those feel-good, can’t-we-all-get-along pieces of parchment whose net effect is to accomplish little except to eat away at American sovereignty and freedom.”

…. and not just the invokation of ” Executive Privilege ” . The whole sordid “Fast & Furious” gambit is scandalous .

” Scandal: The president illegally asserts executive privilege to protect an attorney general who’s
either a clueless political hack, malevolent or both, withholding answers of who is responsible
for a Border Patrol agent’s death.

President Obama’s contempt for the rule of law hit a new low when, on the eve of a vote to hold
Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, he granted his AG’s 11th-hour request to hide sought-after documents on
Operation Fast and Furious under the cover of executive privilege. “

This article by Andrew Malcolm was just begging to be posted here . As regular readers know we have often referred to our illustrious “leader” as Wile E Coyote and now that appellation has made it into IBD .

Not that we are taking credit for the original comparison , mind you , but this did present us with the opportunity to use , once again , one of our favorite graphics …

“One of the immutable rules of politics is that if you have to explain something you’ve said
publicly, the argument is already lost. “What I was trying to say was….” “

As regulars know , this is a subject we here have expounded on before here , here and here . This is absolutely shameless and it is disgraceful that there seems to be no way to make the administration pay for these crimes other than to turn them out in November .

“SecurityFrom leaks about Osama bin Laden to those detailing cyberattacks on Iran, a disturbing pattern of publicly disclosing classified material to give Barack Obama a political boost is emerging. Under this president, our enemies don’t need spies.

The fact that the Allies in World War II had the ability to intercept and decode German and Japanese military transmissions, leading to critical military victories at Midway and elsewhere, remained a secret until long after World War II was over, and it didn’t matter who knew it. “Loose lips sink ships” was then more than a clever wartime slogan. ”

If Obama had been president during WWII the Axis would have prevailed .

Kimberlin Story Gains Traction

The presence of IBD at Aaron Walker’s Hearing would seem to indicate that the story of Brett Kimberlin is finally starting to gain some notoriety other than just in the blogosphere .

“Adding to Walker’s difficulties is that Vaughey looks to be in his late 60s at least. He mentioned a few times about being retired. (Apparently it’s common for retired judges to sometimes come back to the bench to help active judges with the caseload.) Many of Vaughey’s statements suggest that he doesn’t spend much time on the Internet. Thus, he’s probably not intimately familiar with things like Google (GOOG) and Twitter and how they work.

It seemed like Walker did himself in when the judge asked, “Where do you see this case going?”

Walker, who has tried to get the Maryland State Attorney to file charges against Kimberlin for filing what Walker claims are false criminal charges against him (see here), replied, “I hope to raise enough consciousness to get the State’s Attorney to file charges.”

“How are you going to do that?” Vaughey asked.

Walker replied, “I’ve been raising awareness. There’s now 400,000 posts on Google discussing him (Kimberlin), and I’m guessing 300,000 of them are not very pleasant. These are people calling for charges to be filed.”

If you are a judge who knows very little about the Internet, Walker has just made it sound as though he’s able to generate all of this Google traffic against Kimberlin. And Vaughey seemed to believe that is what caused Kimberlin to get death threats.”

Can kangaroo courts and star chambers be far off ? The disdain of the left for the Constitution and the separation of powers is boundless .

Controlling the politically insulated federal courts, especially the Supreme Court, has long been atop the left’s to-do list. Since it doesn’t own Chief Justice John Roberts, now the game is to shame him. ”

As the appeal of their empty promises becomes ever not obvious in the eyes of the voting public their increasingly strident  efforts to stave off the inevitable rendezvous with the “dustbin of history” forces them to resort to a slash and burn .

“President Obama took political meddling with the Supreme Court a step further when he stood before some of the justices assembled within the Capitol for his first State of the Union address.”

This entire effort must end badly for all concerned . The only way the Left can possibily not worry that the disgusting tactics that they now place so much faith in will not be used against them by some future administration of a different party is because they are now “all in” and expect to maintain the reins of power indefinitely .

“Last month, the president contended that if the high court ruled ObamaCare unconstitutional, i twould mean “an unelected group of people would somehow overturn a duly constituted and
passed law” — which is the Supreme Court’s duty of judicial review that it has “somehow”
carried out since Marbury v. Madison in 1803,and which the Warren Court did in landmark
liberal cases such as Brown v. Board of Education and Griswold v. Connecticut. ”

I become increasingly concerned that this administration has no intention of going quietly into that good night . Could our record two and a quarter centuries of peaceful succession

I must say he is highly evolved at this point .

“Election: Remember how candidate Barack Obama complained in 2008 that any discussion not involving the economy was a “distraction”?
This time, his entire campaign is built on distracting voters from the economy.
During his 2008 campaign, one of Obama’s favorite words was “distraction.” He constantly plugged it into his speeches and interviews to dismiss any controversy that might have
erupted, or an issue he didn’t particularly want to talk about.
Questions about how Obama could have sat in the pews and listened to Rev. Wright’s anti-American, race-baiting screeds for years? Distraction. Questions about his relationship with radical Bill Ayers? Distraction. Questions about his qualifications to be president?
Distraction. “

“We would suggest that Ann Romney, and stay at home moms like her, work hard every day. . . . Working moms have our respect, too, since their lives are made
even tougher by President Obama’s
economic policies — especially his war on domestic energy. If Rosen and the Democrats really want to help working moms, they should cut taxes and regulations on families, businesses, energy and entrepreneurs so that more moms and dads can find jobs at higher wages.”

To my mind no political cartoonist is more in touch with our present situation than 2 time Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Ramirez .
