Americans Name Government As No. 1 U.S. Problem

Trends in Top "Most Important" U.S. Problems, March 2014-March 2015

” Americans continue to name the government (18%) as the most important U.S. problem, a distinction it has had for the past four months. Americans’ mentions of the economy as the top problem (11%) dropped this month, leaving it tied with jobs (10%) for second place.

Though issues such as terrorism, healthcare, race relations and immigration have emerged among the top problems in recent polls, government, the economy and unemployment have been the dominant problems listed by Americans for more than a year.

The latest results are from a March 5-8 Gallup poll of 1,025 American adults.

While the ranking of the top two problems is similar to what Gallup found in February, mentions of the economy dropped from 16% to the current 11%. In a separate measure, Americans’ confidence in the economy had been dipping further into negative territory in late February and early March, but has been improving in recent days. “

Read it all and rejoice as the truth finally begins to dawn on the general public …

“A government big enough to give you everything you want, is a government big enough to take away everything that you have.”

Prefer GOP On Seven Of 13 Election Issues; Democrats, On Just Four

2014 Midterm Issues: Importance and Party Advantage

” The Republicans in Congress hold significant leads over the Democrats on four of the six issues that U.S. registered voters say are most important in determining how they will vote in November: the economy, the way the federal government is working, the situation with Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria, and the federal budget deficit. Democrats, by contrast, top their Republican rivals on just one of the six: “equal pay for women.”

These results are from a Sept. 25-30 poll in which Gallup asked registered voters to rate the importance of 13 issues to their vote for Congress, and then to indicate which party would do a better job on each issue. The accompanying graph simultaneously displays the rankings of these issues on both dimensions. The higher an issue is, the greater the Republican Party’s advantage. And the farther to the right an issue is, the more important it is to the electorate.

The 13 issues measured in the new poll include eight that appeared in a Gallup Poll conducted in April, before the midterm campaign season came into full bloom, plus five new ones. In total, six issues were rated above the average of 69%, in terms of the percentage of voters saying they are extremely or very important to their vote:

  1. the economy (88%)
  2. the availability of good jobs (86%)
  3. the way the federal government is working (81%)
  4. the situation with Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria (78%)
  5. equal pay for women (75%) and
  6. the federal budget deficit (73%)

On the No. 1 issue, the economy, Republicans have more than doubled their April lead over Democrats, to 11 percentage points. “

Ebola Yes, Bagpipes No

” Thomas Eric Duncan has the distinction of being America’s Patient Zero – the first but not the last person to develop Ebola symptoms in the United States.

Is he a US citizen? No, he’s Liberian.

Is he a resident of the United States? No, he landed at Washington’s Dulles Airport on September 20th, in order to visit his sister and having quit his job in Monrovia a few weeks earlier.

So he’s a single unemployed man with relatives in the US and no compelling reason to return to his native land. That alone is supposed to be cause for immigration scrutiny.

In addition, visitors from Liberia have the fifth highest “visa overstay rate” in the United States. That’s to say, they understand very clearly that all that matters is getting in. Once you’re in, they’ll never get you out.

And, of course, Liberia is one of the hottest spots of Ebola’s West African “hot zone”. It’s been all over the front pages, except apparently in The US Customs & Border Protection Staff Newsletter, where it rated a solitary “News In Brief” item at the foot of page 37.

Just to give you an example of how hard-assed the boneheads of America’s immigration bureaucracy can be when they want to:

The legendary Gord Sinclair, longtime news director of CJAD in Montreal, had a ski place near Jay in northern Vermont, and he invited his engineer on the show to come down and visit him. “What’s the purpose of your visit?” asked the agent at the small rural border post.

” Oh, just a relaxing weekend at my boss’ place,” said Gord’s colleague affably, and then chortled, “although I don’t know if it’ll be that relaxing. He’ll probably have me out in the yard chopping wood all day.”

So the immigration agent refused him entry on the grounds that he would be working illegally in the United States.”

By The Numbers: Surging Immigrant Population Sets Record

Infographic by Nicole Rusenko

” Nearly four times as many legal and illegal immigrants live in the United States as did in 1970, according to a report issued by the Center for Immigration Studies.

According to the report, which is based on U.S. Census data, the number of immigrants coming from India, China, Latin America, and countries in the Caribbean and Middle East increased the most between 2010 and 2013. The number of immigrants coming to the United States from Europe steadily declined.

Between 2010 and 2013, 4 million new immigrants settled in the United States; and since 2007, when the Great Recession began, at least 7.5 million immigrants have settled in this country, according to the report.”

Politico Battleground Poll Puts Obama At 44/56, GOP Up On Immigration

” Americans are sour on the economy, which surprises Politico’s Alexander Burns [link fixed], but it shouldn’t. In the first major likely-voter poll of the general election, Democrats face strong headwinds on the economic issues that voters tell pollsters will be their main focus in November. Burns notes that voters aren’t buying the Recovery Summer Part IV meme Democrats are selling, although it appears Burns is:

If the nation’s economy is on the mend, the voters of 2014 aren’t feeling it.

Despite continued signs of a halting but persistent national comeback, midterm voters remain frustrated and unhappy with the state of the economy, according to the latest POLITICO poll of likely voters in 2014 battleground states. Many appear to blame President Barack Obama: 57 percent of these voters disapprove of his economic leadership.

But while the economy has improved, it has not yet taken flight: Unemployment remains above 6 percent, and in August the country gained just 142,000 jobs. Candidates around the country have tempered their claims of economic improvement, including Republican governors who also initially aimed to run on their records of job creation.

Some states have seen improved job creation, but not the US as a whole. With the exception of one month out of the past year, there haven’t been any “impressive monthly employment reports,” and even the one didn’t get to the 300K level. Adding an average of around 200K a month only slightly surpasses population growth in the US, which means for the last five years since the technical recovery began, the US has done little except tread water when it comes to job creation. Furthermore, the 6% unemployment rate would be impressive if the workforce participation rate had remained fairly constant, but it hasn’t; it’s at a 36-year low.”

Then there is this gem:

” Unfortunately for Democrats, 35% of likely voters believe economic issues are the top priority for this election in this battleground poll. Another 19% think it’s national security, which makes the situation even worse. The issues that Democrats hoped to highlight in this cycle — the environment, social problems, and immigration — combine up for a whopping 11% of voters who will prioritize them this summer.”

Where Obama Could Lose it All: Senate Races To Watch

” With two months until mid-term congressional elections, President Barack Obama’s Democrats face increasingly long odds of maintaining control of the US Senate. Republicans must gain six seats to take over, and many analysts say that goal is within reach.

Far more Democrats are up for re-election than Republicans this cycle, including four struggling to keep their seats in crucial swing states that Obama lost when he was re-elected in 2012.

But Republicans are hardly united in their tactics, as evidenced by pressure from core conservatives threatening a government shutdown over immigration policy — tactics experts warn could backfire.

Nevertheless, the wind is at Republicans’ backs in this mid-term election, which traditionally favors the opposition party in year six of a presidency, as this is.

Republicans are predicted to maintain control of the House of Representatives, where all 435 seats are being contested. Democrats are struggling to hang on in the 100-member Senate, where 36 seats are up for grabs.

Below is a list of key Senate races in November’s election and issues to watch as the parties battle for congressional supremacy. “

From Germany To Mexico: How America’s Source Of Immigrants Has Changed Over A Century

Where US immigrants come from, state by state today and a century ago

” With more than 40 million immigrants, the United States is the top destination in the world for those moving from one country to another. Mexico, which shares a nearly 2,000-mile border with the U.S., is the source of the largest wave of immigration in history from a single country to the United States.

But today’s volume of immigrants, in some ways, is a return to America’s past. A century ago, the U.S. experienced another large wave of immigrants. Although smaller at 18.2 million, they hailed largely from Europe. Many Americans can trace their roots to that wave of migrants from 1890-1919, when Germany dominated as the country sending the most immigrants to many of the U.S. states, although the United Kingdom, Canada and Italy were also strongly represented.”

Percentage of U.S. population that is foreign born

” In 1910, Germany was the top country of birth among U.S. immigrants, accounting for 18% of all immigrants (or 2.5 million) in the United States. Germans made up the biggest immigrant group in 17 states and the District of Columbia, while Mexico accounted for the most immigrants in just three states (Arizona, New Mexico and Texas). Behind Germany, the second-most number of immigrants in the U.S. were from Russia and the countries that would become the USSR (11%, or 1.6 million).”

French Far-Right Triumphs In Local Polls That Hammer Ruling Socialists

France's local elections

” France’s far-right National Front party dealt a major blow to the ruling Socialists Sunday after several of its candidates took prime position in the first round of local elections.

The main centre-right opposition UMP party also hailed a “big victory” as initial estimates showed it came out trumps in the elections, as President Francois Hollande suffers record unpopularity against a backdrop of near-zero growth and high unemployment.

According to preliminary results from the interior ministry, the UMP and allies took 47 percent of the vote nationwide while the Socialist party and allies took 38 percent, and the FN five percent — far higher than its 0.9 percent result in the first round of 2008 municipal polls.

Applauding what she said was “an exceptional vintage for the FN”, Marine Le Pen — head of the anti-immigration, anti-EU party — said the polls marked the “end of the bipolarisation of the political scene”. “

How Mass (Legal) Immigration Dooms a Conservative Republican Party

Foreword, by Phyllis Schlafly

” People come to America because it is a remarkable oasis of freedom, prosperity, and opportunity for foreigners no matter what socioeconomic rank they were assigned in their native country. Republicans and conservatives recognize that the principal reason for our unique abundance is our constitutional restraints on the power of government. As Thomas Jefferson said, “In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.”
Accordingly, Republicans and conservatives believe in limited government, constitutional separation of powers, balanced budgets, and a minimum of government supervision and interference in our daily lives. Other countries have constitutions that list what the government should do for individuals, whereas the U.S. Constitution recites what government cannot do to us.
This approach has stood the test of time: Our Constitution is the longest-lasting constitution in history. Republicans recognize this as the major factor in our economic
successes. As this report makes clear, current immigration policies are adding thousands of people every day whose views and experience are contrary to the conservative agenda of limited government. Most immigrants come from countries where the only government they knew was one that played a much larger role in the economy and society.
By itself, the 1.1 million legal immigrants that arrive each year under the current system will create 5.1 million new potential voters by 2024 and 8.4 million by 2028. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projections indicate that under the Senate Gang of Eight’s S.744 bill the total additional potential voters would rise to 9.7 million by 2024 and 17.9 million by 2028.
Current immigration policies are adding thousands of people every day whose views and experience are contrary to the conservative agenda of limited government, reducing Republicans’ ability to offer an alternative to big government.

The influx of these new voters will reduce or eliminate Republicans’ ability to offer an alternative to big government, increased government spending, higher taxes, and favorite liberal policies such as Obamacare and gun control. New voters will lean on our hard-pressed health care system and overcrowded public schools to demand more government spending. Amnesty advocates point to the assimilation of large numbers of immigrants in the early years of the 20th century. But that was followed by a national pause and slow down of immigration from the 1920s to the 1960s that allowed newcomers to assimilate, learn our language, and adapt to our unique system of government.
Furthermore, most of those earlier immigrants arrived eager to become Americans. Many became almost 200percent Americans, typified by Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” and by those who dominated Hollywood in those years. Still, it took seven decades and Ronald Reagan before descendents of many of those immigrants votedRepublican. There is nothing controversial about this report’s conclusion that a significant majority of immigrants arriving today generally agree with the Democrats’ big government
agenda. And it is for this reason that they vote two-to-one for Democrats. This report not only cites a large body of survey research showing this is the case, it also quotes numerous academics and political observers making the same point. Immigration has created a greatly expandedleftist Democratic electorate.
The 2008 National Annenberg Election Survey found that 62 percent of immigrants prefer a single, government-run health care system. The 2010 Cooperative CongressionalElection Study found that 69 percent of immigrants support Obamacare, and the Pew Research Center found that 75 percent of Hispanic and 55 percent of Asian immigrants support bigger government. A Harris poll found that 81 percent of native-born Americans believe the schools should teach students to be proud of being American compared to only 50 percent of immigrants who had become naturalized U.S. citizens.

European Far-Right Parties Team Up Against Islam And Brussels

” Six European far-right parties joined forces Thursday to combat immigration and European bureaucracy ahead of 2014 elections, French newspaper Liberation reported.

The parties, which include France’s Front National, are teaming up against two common enemies: Brussels and Islam, the newspaper said. The Netherlands’ PVV, Belgium’s Vlaams Belang, Italy’s Liga Norte, Swedish democrats and Austria’s Freedom Party met at a hotel in Vienna to discuss the outlines of their collaboration.

The meeting happened in secret so as not to attract the attention of possible demonstrators, the paper said, and to be able to devote their time to strategizing about the future of the far-right in Europe.

But Andreas Molzer, the organizer of the meeting and an Austrian member of the European Parliament, confirmed the meeting took place. “The points that unite us are more important than those that separate us,” he told Liberation.”

The “extreme right” of Europe seems to be very similar to the Tea Party on this side of the pond . In typical leftist controlled media fashion those with a divergent viewpoint must be “extreme” . More power to the nationalists . Who really wants their country to be turned into Islamic slums even as the original citizens are forced top foot the bill ?

A Frustrated And Angry West Virginia Has Been Cutting Ties With Its Reliably Democratic Roots

West Virginia

” Ordinary West Virginians used to look to Washington with something close to reverence. It was a partner in good times, a lifeline in bad ones, a powerful ally against the big corporations that came for its coal and timber. By some measures, West Virginia relies more on federal money than any other state.

But increasingly, it also has become an extreme example of the hostility that shows up in every national poll when people are asked how they feel about the federal government. Many here now speak of Washington as an enemy that threatens their economy and their way of life, that traps them into dependency.

Washington’s 100 percent against us,” said M.E. Walker, a retired road builder who lives in Pence Springs in Summers County. “They don’t like our jobs. They don’t like our attitudes.”

Mexico Actually Produces An Official Guidebook To Entering The U.S. Illegally (Photos)

Guide for the Mexican Migrant

” In 2004, columnist Rick Oltman broke the story that the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs had produced a 32-page “How To” guide for Mexican nationals crossing the border illegally into the United States. Despite the fact that this pamphlet has known to the public for 9 years, and has the official endorsement of the Mexican government, the mainstream press has completely ignored what amounts to an instruction manual for illegal aliens.

While Mexico publicly claims to be working with U.S. authorities in stemming the flow of illegal aliens into this country, this booklet tells another story and is further evidence of their complicity. After all, illegal immigration is big business for Mexico, as remittances (wire transfers) from the United States represents Mexico’s second most lucrative industry, behind oil exports.

What follows are a few excerpts taken directly from Mexico’s “Guide for the Mexican Migrant:”

Dear fellow citizen:

This guide tries to provide you with some practical advice that may be useful to you in case you have made the difficult decision to seek new work opportunities outside of your own country.”

HOUSE LEADERS TO EDUCATE VOTERS ABOUT IMMIGRATION: ‘BECOME AMERICA’

” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) will lead a tour of House leaders next week aimed at educating Americans, and each other, about the history and importance of immigration to the United States. The tour, dubbed the “Become America” tour, will feature events and speeches aimed at overcoming opposition to the passage of comprehensive immigration reform, which has stumbled amidst opposition from conservatives.

“The lawmakers will attend events on Ellis Island and at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the African Burial Ground National Monument, according to an itinerary of the trip,” Politico reported late Wednesday evening. “Leaders will speak at a naturalization ceremony, and the group will also have a breakfast meeting at Gracie Mansion with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a key advocate of immigration reform.” ”

How Does Immigration Impact Wages?

” Many Americans are curious about the impact of immigration on the wages of other Americans.  The best research on this focuses on the period between 1990 and 2006, when almost 17 million people immigrated to the U.S. lawfully and a net 12 million came unlawfully.  The first major study is by Borjas and Katz (B&K) and the second is by Ottaviano and Peri (O&P).  O&P borrowed much of B&K’s methodology.  Here are the long run findings:”

GOP Border Deal Lifts Immigration Bill Chances

” A deal to double Border Patrol agents and fencing at the U.S.-Mexico border improved prospects of the Senate passing an immigration overhaul law, senators said.”

They’ll double the guards and fences , allegedly , and that will bring our border security up from completely ineffective to marginally effective and that is being touted as “tough enforcement”?

“We are on the verge of a huge breakthrough on border security,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., a member of the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” that wrote the Senate’s original comprehensive immigration reform bill that includes a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally.”

If Schumer thinks it’s good , America is in for a screwing . Don’t believe a word coming out of the Senate . It is nothing but a pack of inveterate liars seeking to keep their jobs and perks from being threatened . They are the self-serving 1% if ever there was such .

Rubio Has Long History Of Blocking Immigration Enforcement

” Sen. Marco Rubio blocked numerous immigration-enforcement bills when he served as speaker in the Florida House of Representatives from 2007 to 2009.

“Rubio blocked any efforts to deal with the problems of illegal immigration on the local or state level,” one former politician from South Florida, who has known Rubio since his city councilman days in West Miami, told The Daily Caller.

Rubio’s record is relevant now because he’s presented himself as a moderate backer for the Democratic-led “Gang of Eight” immigration bill. Proponents of the bill argue that its extensive loosening of immigration laws (including a “pathway to citizenship” that Rubio in 2010 described as “basically code for amnesty”) will be balanced by tougher enforcement.

But the record shows that Rubio used his power in Florida to block popular immigration-enforcement bills prior to his election-trail conversion into an immigration-hawk.”

Study Pegs Cost Of Immigration Bill’s Mass Legalization At $6.3 Trillion

” The comprehensive immigration overhaul being taken up in the Senate this week could cost taxpayers $6.3 trillion if 11 million illegal immigrants are granted legal status, according to a long-awaited estimate by the conservative Heritage Foundation.

The cost would arise from illegal immigrants tapping into the government’s vast network of benefits and services, many of which are currently unavailable to them. This includes everything from standard benefits like Social Security and Medicare to dozens of welfare programs ranging from housing assistance to food stamps.

“No matter how you slice it, amnesty will add a tremendous amount of pressure on America’s already strained public purse,” Robert Rector, the Heritage scholar who prepared the report, said in a statement.

On an annual basis, the report estimates the cost will be $106 billion after the interim phase is over. In the course of their lifetime, the report estimates that illegal immigrant households would receive an average of $592,000 in government benefits. “

Noonan: Obama Already Close To Lame Duck Status

” President Barack Obama is on the way to becoming a lame duck president, says Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan in an editorial.

He’s not there yet as anything can happen in his remaining 44 months in office to make him relevant, but he’s getting close, she says.

“He’s not a lame duck, he’s just lame,” the former Ronald Reagan speechwriter writes.

Noonan cites a litany of setbacks that have dogged Obama:

• “He couldn’t get a win on gun control with 90 percent public support;”
• “When he speaks on immigration reform you get the sense he’s setting it back;”
• “He’s floundering on Syria;”
• “The looming crisis on implementation of Obamacare has begun to fill the news. Even his allies are using the term ‘train wreck.’ Obamacare is not only the most slovenly written major law in modern American history, it is full of sneaked-in surprises people are just discovering;”
• His “sequester strategy — scare the American public into supporting me — flopped;”
• “Benghazi and what appear to be its cover-ups drag on and will not go away;”
• “The economy is stuck in low-growth, employment in no-growth.”

“The president seems incapable of changing anything, even in a crisis. He’s been scored as passive and petulant, but it’s the kind of passivity people fall into when nothing works.” “

Recognizing the truth now , five years too late , in no way restores your lost credibility Ms Noonan . Once a fool , always a fool .

Immigration Bill Guts E-Verify For Years

” The Senate’s complex immigration bill would instantly gut the popular E-Verify system that is widely used to exclude illegal immigrants from jobs, and then create an enforcement gap for several years before the arrival of a replacement system.

“There’s no doubt that the bill eliminates E-Verify immediately upon signing,” said Kris Kobach, secretary of state of Kansas, told The Daily Caller.

“If there’s no statutory authority for E-Verify, there’s no E-Verify,” said Kobach, a lawyer trained at Harvard, Oxford and Yale universities, and a prominent advocate for reduced immigration.”

African-American Leaders Call On Congressional Black Caucus To Halt Immigration Bill

” The African American Leadership Council asked the Congressional Black Caucus to oppose the Senate Gang of Eight’s immigration bill at a press conference Wednesday morning.

The leaders called on the caucus to protect black workers by opposing the 844-page bill, portions of which the coalition described as amnesty.

The council questioned whether there are enough low-skill jobs for both African Americans and immigrants. One member said increased immigration levels would keep black unemployment, which is already nearly double the national average, elevated for some time.

“With unemployment at 7.6 percent, this is preposterous,” coalition member Charles Butler said. “What makes sense is for America’s jobs to be reserved for people who are legally entitled to compete for them.”

The coalition slammed establishment black leaders in the press conference, saying they do not represent the African-American community on this issue.”

Of course that’s not the way the WSJ put it , but face it , Tamerlan Tsarnaev was arrested for Assault & Battery in 2009 and could have been deported then . In 2011 the FBI , at the request of a foreign government , investigated him and allegations that he was an adherent of Radical Islam and again dropped the ball . Is that effective terror prevention ?

” Late Friday, the FBI posted this statement on its 2011 interview ofTamerlan Tsarnaev, the suspected Boston bomber who was killed in a police shootout. Here is the statement:

2011 Request for Information on Tamerlan Tsarnaev from Foreign Government

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, age 26, was previously designated as Suspect 1, wearing a black hat. Dzhokar A. Tsarnaev, age 19, was designated as Suspect 2, wearing a white hat. Both were born in Kyrgyzstan.

Once the FBI learned the identities of the two brothers today, the FBI reviewed its records and determined that in early 2011, a foreign government asked the FBI for information about Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The request stated that it was based on information that he was a follower of radical Islam and a strong believer, and that he had changed drastically since 2010 as he prepared to leave the United States for travel to the country’s region to join unspecified underground groups.

In response to this 2011 request, the FBI checked U.S. government databases and other information to look for such things as derogatory telephone communications, possible use of online sites associated with the promotion of radical activity, associations with other persons of interest, travel history and plans, and education history. The FBI also interviewed Tamerlan Tsarnaev and family members. The FBI did not find any terrorism activity, domestic or foreign, and those results were provided to the foreign government in the summer of 2011. The FBI requested but did not receive more specific or additional information from the foreign government.”

SHERIFFS, IMMIGRATION AGENTS: NO ONE CONSULTED US ON IMMIGRATION BILL

” Law enforcement officials from around the country coalesced on Thursday against the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” immigration bill, arguing that it did not solve of the nation’s immigration law problems and railing on the senators involved for not including law enforcement experts in their creation of the bill.

“Almost one month ago, we asked for a meeting with the Gang of Eight to discuss law enforcement concerns,” Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents’ union president Chris Crane said at a Thursday press conference. “They told us they weren’t taking meetings but they were meeting all along with special interests and pro-amnesty groups. Finally, after public pressure grew, I got a late Monday night meeting with Sen. Rubio the day before this almost-1,000-page bill was introduced. I raised my many public safety concerns and pleaded with him not to drop the bill until these public safety concerns with law enforcement were addressed. They dropped it anyway.”

Crane went on to say that he thinks the bill will “put the public safety at risk without doubt. It fails on interior enforcement, it’s amnesty first, enforcement perhaps never.

“Unfortunately, I do not believe that the Gang of Eight is a group that we can trust with a matter so important to the safety of American communities and security of our nation,” Crane said.”

Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Black Panther) Introduces Resolution Seeking To Ban Use Of Term “Illegal Immigrant” In The House…

” Ex-Black Panther Bobby Rush would prefer the term, try not to laugh, “undocumented foreign nationals” be used.

Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) has introduced a resolution that calls on members of the House to stop referring to “undocumented foreign nationals” as “illegal” immigrants.

His proposal, H.Res. 155, expresses the “necessity” for members of the House to use the term “undocumented” instead of “illegal” when referring to “foreign nationals which are working in the United States without proper documentation.”

Rush’s resolution was proposed shortly after The Associated Press news service said it would no longer use the term “illegal immigrant.” According to the AP, “illegal” should be used to describe an action, not a person.
