Eleventh-Hour Drama For Net Neutrality

These three political appointees hold the key to the future of the internet … WTF ?

” A Democrat on the Federal Communications Commission wants to see changes that could narrow the scope of new net neutrality rules set for a vote on Thursday.

Mignon Clyburn, one of three Democrats on the FCC, has asked Chairman Tom Wheeler to roll back some of his provisions before the full commission votes on them, FCC officials said.

The request — which Wheeler has yet to respond to — puts the chairman in the awkward position of having to either roll back his proposals, or defend the tough rules and convince Clyburn to back down.

It’s an ironic spot for Wheeler, who for months was considered to be favoring weaker rules than those pushed for by his fellow Democrats, before he reversed himself and backed tougher restrictions on Internet service providers.

Clyburn’s objections complicate the highly anticipated vote and add an extra bit of drama to the already high tensions on the five-member commission.

Wheeler will need the votes of both Clyburn and Democratic Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel to pass the rules, since the two Republicans on the commission are expected to vote against anything he proposes.

Clyburn’s changes would leave in place the central and most controversial component of Wheeler’s rules — the notion that broadband Internet service should be reclassified so that it can be treated as a telecommunications service under Title II of the Communications Act, similar to utilities like phone lines.

The full text of the rules will not be revealed to the public until after the FCC’s vote on Thursday morning.”

TPP Raises Fears Of Global Internet Censoring

Published on Apr 22, 2014
Open internet groups are expressing concern over regulations that may be implemented as part of the yet to be signed Trans-Pacific Partnership. President Barack Obama is traveling to Japan later this week to work with negotiators, who critics say have worked in secret to include restrictive language requiring internet service providers to monitor and censor internet traffic. Dealing with enforcement of intellectual property rights, the controversial sections have garnered a strong backlash from digital rights organizations. RT’s Lindsay France discusses the concerns of these groups with Steve Anderson, executive director of OpenMedIa.”

The World To U.S. Congress: I’m Not American But I Have Privacy Rights

” In a letter sent today to the United States Congress, an international coalition of non-profit organizations called upon the U.S. government to protect the privacy and freedoms of not only its citizens, but of people everywhere. As news of the alarmingly broad reach and scope of America’s surveillance program reverberates around the globe, now is the time for the United States to pass formal privacy safeguards to protect the billions of foreign Internet users whose communications are stored in U.S. servers or whose data travels across U.S. networks.

EFF joined more than 50 NGOs—including European Digital Rights, Association For Progressive Communications, Center for Technology and Society (Brazil) and Thai Netizen Network—in signing the letter, which was organized through Best Bits, a global network of civil society organizations.  In its letter, the coalition also expressed grave concern over information-sharing between U.S. authorities and the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada, Belgium and New Zealand.”

How can America continue to lay claim to being the custodian of the internet and the guardian of free speech when the world looks on and sees nothing but a massive violation of privacy rights , both of Americans and themselves ? The hypocrisy is plain for all to see , even if DC refuses to acknowledge it .

“Russia: UN Should Control Internet”

“Don’t tell Al Gore, but Russia and China are leading the charge to take custody of the internet from a handful of U.S.-based NGOs and give it to the UN.”

The makings of disaster …

“The UN, which has a deplorable record when it comes to human rights and basic freedoms, wants control over the most important communications tool in the world?  The same UN that elected Iran to the UN Arms Trade Treaty conference, appointed a Libyan representative to lead the Human Rights Commission, named Robert Mugabe its Special Tourism Envoy, and awarded a prize funded by money stolen from Equatorial Guineans by their brutal dictator? Many UN members would like nothing better than to censor or ban the irritating news stories that can so swiftly spread across the web.”

By all means , let’s give control of humanity’s best shot at liberty to the despots and terrorists that control the cesspit that is the UN .
