Exclusive: Photographs Expose Russian-Trained Killers In Kiev

Russian Snipers Kiev

” The first crack of a sniper’s round in Kiev’s Independence Square came shortly after nine o’clock on the morning of February 20 and the last about seven hours later at around four o’clock in the afternoon drawing to a close the bloodiest day in what had been a months-long struggle to oust Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych.

Many of the 53 people slain died from clean shots to the head or neck—telltale wounds inflicted by expert marksmen; while others were gunned down at closer quarters by less expert assassins armed with AK-47 assault rifles.

Most of the photographs accompanying this article were taken on February 20, and they appear to reveal the truth about who carried out the shootings in Independence Square on that day—a fateful one for both Ukraine and for Europe, which suddenly witnessed the continent’s worst political violence of the 21st century. The pictures shared exclusively with The Daily Beast show members of a crack anti-terrorist unit known as the Alfa Team in the courtyard of the headquarters of Ukraine’s feared state security service, the SBU, preparing themselves for battle. The agency’s seven-story headquarters occupies an entire city block and is just three streets from the Maidan.”

Leaked Phone Call: Kiev Snipers Hired By US-Backed Opposition

” Details of a leaked phone call between EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and Estonian foreign affairs minister Urmas Paet suggest that the US-backed opposition was responsible for hiring snipers who gunned down protesters in Kiev and not the deposed government of Viktor Yanukovich, as the media widely claimed.

During the phone call, Paet tells Ashton that evidence presented to him by a doctor who treated victims of the sniper attacks clearly indicates both police and protesters were being shot at by the same people.

“ There is now stronger and stronger understanding that behind the snipers, it was not Yanukovich, but it was somebody from the new coalition,” said Paet during the phone call, which was hacked by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

“ And second, what was quite disturbing, this same Olga [Bogomolets] told as well that all the evidence shows that the people who were killed by snipers from both sides, among policemen and then people from the streets, that they were the same snipers killing people from both sides,” the Estonian FM added.”

Arrest Warrants Issued For Yanukovych, Other Former Ukraine Officials On Suspicion Of Mass Murder

” Former President Viktor Yanukovych is wanted for “mass killings of civilians,” reported acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov on his Facebook page on the morning of Feb. 24.

Avakov, who is now the nation’s top cop, said that arrest warrants have been issued for Yanukovych and “other (former) government officials.” He did not name the other former officials wanted by police.

Avakov also didn’t specify which killings, but it is presumed that the investigation centers on whether Yanukovych hired snipers or ordered riot police to shoot EuroMaidan demonstrators in January and February.

Nearly 100 civilians have been killed in the demonstrations, including at least 75 people from Feb. 18-20, triggering Yanukovych’s flight from Kyiv and subsequent impeachment from office by parliament on Feb. 22.”

Lot’s more reporting at the Kyiv Post and in other news the people have opened up Yanukovych’s dacha in the Crimea and posted a video hinting at the ex-president’s extravagant life style …

BREAKING- Yulia Tymoshenko FIERY SPEECH: ‘You Have The Right to Rule Your Own Country’

Published on Feb 22, 2014

” WATCH: Freed Opposition Leader Tymoshenko Speaks Live To Kiev Demonstrators: “Their Blood Will Not Be Forgotten”

Tymoshenko Addresses the Crowd: “We cannot afford to pardon those who were allowed to send bullets into hearts of our young men”
(BBC) Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has arrived in Independence Square in the heart of Kiev to cheers of thousands after being freed from prison.
She is addressing the crowds there from her wheelchair.
Just hours earlier, she was freed following a vote by parliament on Friday demanding her release.
Speaking after President Viktor Yanukovych had left the capital Kiev, she said a “dictatorship has fallen”.
She was sentenced to seven years in jail in 2011 after a controversial verdict on her actions as prime minister.
She left the hospital in the eastern city of Kharkiv, where she had been held under prison guard, and flew to Kiev.

She told journalists at Kiev airport that those behind violence “must be punished”, the Interfax agency reports.

On Thursday, the bloodiest day of recent unrest, at least 21 protesters and one policeman died.

Old enemies
Ukraine’s parliament also voted on Saturday to remove President Viktor Yanukovich and set an early election for 25 May, completing a radical transformation in the former Soviet republic of 46 million people.

The vote came after police stopped guarding presidential buildings, allowing protesters in, and parliament made new high-level appointments.

Mr Yanukovych said it was a “coup” and vowed not to stand down.

The opposition is now in effective control of the capital Kiev, with Mr Yanukovych in Kharkiv, near the Russian border, after travelling there late on Friday night.

The Interfax news agency reported parliament speaker Oleksandr Turchynov as saying Mr Yanukovych had been stopped by border police in an attempt to flee to Russia and was now somewhere in the Donetsk region.

Earlier on Saturday, protesters walked unchallenged into the president’s office and residential compounds.

Fiery orator

Ms Tymoshenko’s release has always been a key demand of the protest movement.

The glamorous, fiery orator who helped lead the Orange Revolution – Ukraine’s revolt against a controversial election in 2004 – was convicted of criminally exceeding her powers when she agreed a gas deal with Russia which was seen to have disadvantaged Ukraine.

She has always insisted the charges were untrue, inspired by Mr Yanukovych, the man she helped oust in 2004 who returned to defeat her in the 2010 presidential election.

The European Union had demanded her release as one of the conditions of the EU-Ukraine trade pact that President Yanukovych rejected last year – triggering the protests that led to the current crisis.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso welcomed Ms Tymoshenko’s release.

In April 2013 the European Court of Human Rights ruled that her pre-trial detention had been “arbitrary and unlawful”, though the judges did not rule on the legality of her actual conviction for the 2009 gas deal.

They did not explicitly support her claim that her detention was politically motivated, nor did they accept her allegations of physical maltreatment and medical neglect in prison.”

” 02:28 – While Yanukovych is reportedly fleeing from Kiev to Kharkiv, the SSU (Security Service of Ukraine) is opening criminal cases against both the governor of Kharkiv Oblast and the mayor of Kharkiv city. The reason — separatism. Below is a translation:

The Ukrainian Security Service has opened a criminal case nagainst the mayor of Kharkiv, Gennady Kernes, and the governor of the Kharkiv oblast, Mikhail Dobkin. This was announced by the former Interior Minister, Yuri Lutsenko, while conversing with protesters at the Maidan barricades, according to Segodnya.ua.
“I spoke with high-ranking officals at the SSU [Security Service], and I was informed that, on account of separatist declarations, the SBU had opened a criminal case against Mayor Kernes of Kharkiv and Governor Dobkin of the Kharkiv oblast”, said Lutsenko.Let us recall that Gennady Kernes and Mikhail Dobkin have previously made statements regarding the federalisation of Ukraine. Dobkin has also stated that he has the right to impose a “special” regime in the Kharkiv oblast. Suggestions were already being heard in January that the officials could be brought to justice for such claims. – interpretermag.com”

Deadliest Day In Ukraine Protests Yet, Despite Truce

Published on Feb 20, 2014

” At least 75 people have been killed in violent riots in Kiev, the Ukrainian Health Department has stated. Doctors working on Kiev’s Independence Square, however, claimed that as many as 70 people were killed on the rioters’ side alone on Thursday. The death toll in the most violent wave of clashes between the rioters and the police in Kiev is likely to increase, as there are conflicting figures coming from the Health Department, city officials and the opposition. As many as 550 people have been injured, according to official estimates. Until this week, snipers shooting people in central Kiev have been little more than unsupported hearsay. But on Thursday, both security forces and rioters were filmed stalking the streets with rifles. RT’s Aleksey Yaroshevsky reports to Meghan Lopez that unidentified snipers were firing from buildings all around Independence Square.

EU leaders have agreed to impose sanctions on the country, joining the US in threatening consequences. Individual sanctions for 20 Ukrainian politicians have already been imposed by Washington. Critics, including The Nation’s contributing editor, Stephen Cohen, say that threats of sanctions and misunderstanding of the situation on the ground are misguided. RT’s Gayane Chichakyan looks at how the US and EU are reacting to the increasing violence in Ukraine.

Meanwhile Euromaidan In English provides us with this report on the day’s events in Kiev …

” This is what happened today (please share to inform all):

Today, after the morning massacres had calmed down a little, opposition politicians began calling for MP’s to gather in Parliament at 3pm. Deputy Lyashko and others pronounced guarantees to Party of Regions MP’s that no demonstrations would be held near the building during this special session – apparently some government MP’s had expressed concern for their own safety in the wake of that morning’s violence and deaths.

The session did not start until around 5pm, and MPs gathered very gradually. Initially, only 227 registered (minimum quorum: 226), but as the evening wore on, more and more MP’s from the Party of Regions and nominal independents arrived. By 10pm, 238 had registered to vote. The key test came just after 10pm when the speeches ceased and a draft document was put to a vote. In the end 236 voted in favor of the “Postanova” that orders the following:

1. All Interior Ministry troops currently in Kyiv are ordered to cease fire and return to barracks.
2. All live ammunition and lethal weapons that have been issued to government forces are to be returned immediately.
3. Blocking roads and rail lines for the purpose of limiting the movement of people is to cease.
4. All anti terrorist operations currently undertaken by the State Security Service and Interior Ministry are to be stopped immediately.
5. Circumstances that have led to deaths and casualties are to be investigated and the guilty brought to trial forthwith by the Prosecutor General.
6. The Cabinet of Ministers is ordered to provide financial compensation to all victims of the recent violence and their families.
7. Activists arrested for their participation in protests are to be released and all criminal cases against them closed.
8. It is now the exclusive right of parliament to declare a state of emergency. All of the above was passed as a “Postanova” – a one time legislative order that has the force of law, but according to Ukraine’s Constitution, and unlike other laws, need not be signed by the President. Postanova’s are signed by the Chairman/Speaker of the Parliament, or in his absence, by one of his Deputies. Tonight’s session of Parliament was chaired by Svoboda MP Koshulynsky, and he has signed the document making it legal.

  Two points of significance:

1) Parliamentary Speaker Rybak and First Deputy Speaker Kaletnyk (Communist Party) were not present at tonight’s session; neither were 167 deputies from the Party of Regions, nor any of the Communist MP’s. Nevertheless, a temporary majority was assembled with all members of the 3 opposition parties and most independents in attendance together with 20+ Party of Regions MPs who have now effectively defected from the government camp. According to rumors many Party of Regions MPs left the country today – including (according to some reports) Speaker Rybak.

Does this signal a permanent end to the pro-Yanukovych majority in Parliament? If so, it signifies the beginning of the end of his regime.2) Although a Postanova is a legislative order that has the force of law, and cannot be vetoed by the President, it is unclear what happens if Yanukovych issues a Presidential Decree cancelling the Postanova. Furthermore, it is unclear which should take precedent: the Law on Counter-Terrorism which has been the formal document used to authorize the use of lethal force and abrogation of civil rights during the past 2 days, or the one-time Postanova. Finally is highly unclear whether Interior Ministry forces will obey this Postanova at all.

After passing their document, Ukraine’s 3 opposition leaders immediately left Parliament for the Presidential Administration building where, reportedly, they were joined by 3 visiting EU foreign ministers. Apparently they will attempt to collectively convince Yanukovych to accept the need for constitutional changes – these are to be voted on tomorrow. Whether enough votes can be gathered, and whether Yanukovych will budge are all open questions…

Published on Feb 20, 2014

To round out this evening’s update on Ukrainian news we present this report regarding an alleged conspiracy of sorts as to the “grassroots” nature of the viral video “I Am A Ukranian” and thus the riots themselves .

” As they seize weapons, take over government buildings and fire on media outlets, the US-backed Ukrainian protesters are being afforded legitimacy with the aid of a Kony 2012-style viral video which triumphs the grass roots nature of the demonstrations yet is linked to shadowy NGOs that have been directly involved in staging phony ‘color revolutions’ in the past.

The woman encourages viewers to “help us only by telling this story….only by sharing this video,” thereby framing the debate around the naive narrative that the crisis is solely about Ukrainians wanting “freedom,” and in essence blacklisting the real reasons behind the western-instigated revolt, which focus on the geopolitical isolation of Russia.

The origins of the video are not quite as ‘grass roots’ as is portrayed. The clip was produced by the team behind A Whisper to a Roar, a documentary about the “fight for democracy” all over the world, which was funded by Prince Moulay Hicham of Morocco. The “inspiration” behind the documentary was none other than Larry Diamond, a Council on Foreign Relations member. The Council on Foreign Relations is considered to be America’s “most influential foreign-policy think tank” and has deep connections with the U.S. State Department.

Diamond has also worked closely with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The National Endowment for Democracy is considered to be the CIA’s “civilian arm” and has been deeply embroiled in innumerable instigated uprisings, attempted coups and acts of neo-colonial regime change since its creation in 1983, including the contrived 2004 “Orange Revolution” that brought US puppet Viktor Yushchenko to power in Ukraine.  “

Address Of The Ukrainian Bar On The Situation In The Country

” We, the undersigned, professional lawyers can not and do not want to put up with the lawlessness that takes place in Ukraine before our eyes over the past two-plus months. Moreover, the events of recent weeks in Ukraine have shown that a violation of law and basic principles of human morality are not just carry a massive and systematic nature of the state authorities.

Thanks to the heroic and sacrificial work of hundreds of journalists and civil society activists entire country received unequivocal evidence of crimes committed en masse all branches of power in Ukraine:

  • MPs vote for bills that do not read, under pressure from those who must control and limit,
  • police officers guard the offenders and torture of peaceful demonstrators, and
  • courts knowingly render unlawful decisions without any research or even complete disregard of circumstances.

These illegal criminal acts have become so widespread and public that they can not hide any application and creative interpretation of the facts. It is significant that none of the cases of abuse of power did not get a decent assessment of the public authorities.

Unfortunately, we have to admit that the main reason that happens is a long-term destruction of the basic principles of the establishment and functioning of state authorities in Ukraine. Today the entire state machinery has become a machine of making money, which ceased to perform its primary function and single – serving the people.

These processes began to rise to power of current leaders of the country, but for them peaked and started to threaten not only the economy but also the lives and health of all residents of the country. Thousands of lives maimed, millions lost trust in the law, and to the people that are meant to protect it.

Given the dire situation as human rights and the functioning of the Ukrainian state, we have:

  • ready to give us all the collected evidence and its own analysis to assess actions of government bodies;
  • We ask all concerned legislators unite to fix all common offenses, giving them professional judgment and protect victims;
  • requires all public and professional organizations claiming to represent the interests of lawyers, including:
  • Lawyers Association of Ukraine (ACU)
  • Union of Lawyers of Ukraine,
  • Union of Advocates of Ukraine,
  • National Association of Advocates of Ukraine

immediately determine their own assessment of the situation in the country and a legal qualification to state authority. We assume no officially declared position on the qualifications of the authorities’ full and unconditional agreement with the lawlessness perpetrated by public authorities;

  • require public authorities at all levels to stop the lawlessness and initiate public dialogue on the structural reform of public authorities, including law enforcement bodies and courts;
  • remind all our colleagues both in form and in plain clothes and all civil servants that they always have the option not to commit illegal acts and remain people – resignation. From our side we will assist as much as possible so that guilty of violating the law of representatives of government took full responsibility without limitation terms for their involvement in it.

  • готові надати всі зібрані нами докази та власний аналіз для оцінки діянь представників органів державної влади;
  • просимо всіх небайдужих правників об’єднатися для спільної фіксації усіх фактів правопорушень, надання ним фахової оцінки та захисту постраждалих;

негайно визначитися з власною оцінкою ситуації в країні та юридичною кваліфікацією дій органів державної влади. Вважатимемо відсутність офіційно проголошеної позиції щодо кваліфікації дій влади повною і беззаперечною згодою із беззаконням, яке чинять органи державної влади;

  • вимагаємо від органів державної влади всіх рівнів припинити беззаконня і розпочати суспільний діалог щодо структурного реформування органів державної влади, зокрема правоохоронних органів та судів;

Ukraine Crisis: Renewed Kiev Assault On Protesters

” Police in the Ukrainian capital Kiev have launched a fresh attack on anti-government protesters as the death toll in renewed clashes has climbed to 26.

The new attempt to uproot the protest stronghold came as President Yanukovych blamed opposition leaders for the worst violence in months of unrest.

The EU says it expects to agree sanctions on those behind “repression”.

The violence is contained – and mostly takes place in four square kilometres in central Kiev – but the determination of the most active protesters should not be underestimated, nor should President Viktor Yanukovych’s determination to survive.

It’s unlikely that any leader of a Western European democracy would still be in post if similar events had happened in their country.

What makes this crisis so serious is the quiet support that many in western Ukraine, particularly in Lviv, are giving to the violence. It means that a split between eastern Ukraine and western Ukraine is being openly discussed, even though few people say they want that.”

The United States And Europe Dawdle While Ukraine Goes Up In Flames

” Deadly violence claimed at least 18 lives in Kiev on Tuesday as riot police moved on activists’ encampments in the center of the city after protesters stormed the Ukrainian parliament. Inside the building, fights broke out as pro-government deputies blocked the opposition’s effort to submit a draft resolution to reinstate the 2004 constitution that would limit President Yanukovich’s power.

As protests against Ukraine’s pro-Russian president enter their fourth month, it is clear that the battle cannot be resolved by compromise. Both sides are employing scorched earth polices from which there will emerge one winner and one loser. The United States and Europe have so far abdicated the opportunity to provide real assistance to the opposition. Putin, on the other hand, will leave no stone unturned to insure that his allies emerge victorious.  In such confrontations, the street fighter wins and the gentlemen lose.

Yanukovich and his allies are playing for time, stretching out negotiations, pleading illness, and hoping for the steam to run out of the protests. The protesters are characterized as Nazis, skin heads, and criminals in the pay of hostile European powers and the United States. The United States and Europe are to blame for their blatant intervention in Ukraine’s internal affairs. Yanukovich trump card is his confidence that Putin will do all that is necessary to break the backs of the protesters and keep Ukraine in his proposed Eurasian Community. It was Putin’s pledge of $15 billion and cheap energy that broke the momentum of the protests in December. With the Sochi Olympics out of the way, Putin is again free to deploy his bag of dirty tricks.

The protesters understand that they cannot lose the momentum by ramping down the protests. They understand that Yanukovich’s promises of shared government and amnesty are sham plays for time.  He has no intention of going anywhere, and he will not give up control of the police, military, tax authorities, and the prosecutor’s office. Any compromise which leaves these “power ministries” in his hands will allow him to exact heavy revenge once things settle down.”

Joe Biden was heard to say :

Readout of Vice President Biden’s Call with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych

” Vice President Biden called Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych today to express grave concern regarding the crisis on the streets of Kyiv. He called on President Yanukovych to pull back government forces and to exercise maximum restraint. The Vice President made clear that the United States condemns violence by any side, but that the government bears special responsibility to de-escalate the situation. The Vice President further underscored the urgency of immediate dialogue with opposition leaders to address protesters’ legitimate grievances and to put forward serious proposals for political reform. The United States is committed to supporting efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the crisis that reflects the will and aspirations of the Ukrainian people.”

Ukraine: Fireworks And Paving Stones Rain On Berkut Forces

Published on Feb 18, 2014

” Security forces charged over barricades set up by protesters during fresh clashes outside October Palace in Kiev on Tuesday, that have so far left five people dead.

Protesters burned tyres and threw molotov cocktails and rocks at security forces, who retaliated with tear gas and rubber bullets.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior has set a deadline of 18:00 (16:000 GMT) for protesters to end the fresh wave of riots.”

Ukraine: Barricades Ablaze On Maidan

Published on Feb 18, 2014

” Thousands continue to occupy Kiev’s Independence Square as state security forces move in to disperse the crowds. Water cannons and APCs have been deployed by police to clear the square.

There are reportedly around 20,000 people gathered on Independence Square, many of them gathered behind barricades.

At least 18 people are reported to have been killed as a result of Tuesday’s violence, including 11 protesters and 7 police officers. Hundreds more have been injured in the clashes.”

Ukraine: Dozens Injured As Fresh Riots Erupt In Kiev

Published on Feb 18, 2014

” At least five protesters have died and dozens have been injured as fresh clashes between rioters and police erupt in central Kiev on Tuesday.

Protesters burnt tyres and threw molotov cocktails whilst police retaliated with tear gas and rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the crowds. At least 37 police officers have also been injured in the protests.

Earlier in the day the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior released a statement setting 18:00(16:00 GMT) as a deadline which protesters must meet to end the fresh wave of unrest in Kiev.

A statement issued by the SBU urges the protesters to return to the negotiation table and threatens the opposition with the use of force, in accordance with the Ukrainian law, if they do not comply.”

The lack of American leadership on the world stage continues to make itself felt where-ever the desire for freedom dares show it’s head .

” A  Europe that encompasses Ukraine will put an end to Putin’s expansionary vision of restoring the former Soviet empire. It will diminish his  ability to be a trouble maker around the globe. Putin punches above his weight because of the weakness of the West, not because of his strength.  He understands that the ones who enter a street fight with brass knuckles will win against gentlemen who insist on fighting fair.

Having Ukraine firmly in the Western camp is worth tens or hundreds of billion dollars over the long haul, and we cannot put together a measly $15 billion spread among ourselves to give the protesters some real ammunition? Why refuse to enter into a bidding war for a valuable outcome when the other side is not constrained by such gentlemen’s diplomacy?”

Around 70000 Rally In Kiev In Fresh Show Of Force

” An estimated 70,000 pro-Western Ukrainians thronged the heart of Kiev vowing never to give up their drive to oust President Viktor Yanukovych for his alliance with old master Russia.

Wearing blue and yellow ribbons — the colours of both Ukraine and the European Union — the crowd received a religious blessing before opposition leaders took to a podium on Independence Square in a bid to ratchet up pressure on Mr Yanukovych to appoint a new pro-Western government.”

” “ None of the kidnappings and tortures have yielded any results,” said Igor Lutsenko, an activist who survived a severe beating after reportedly being abducted from hospital during deadly unrest in January.

The ex-Soviet nation of 46 million people has been in chaos since November when Mr Yanukovych ditched a historic EU trade and political pact in favor of closer ties with Moscow, stunning pro-EU parts of the population and sparking violent protests.

Since then, what started out as a localized, domestic bout of unrest has snowballed into a titanic tussle for Ukraine’s future between Russia and the West, as demonstrations continued and spread to other parts of the country.”

Shocking Police Brutality In Ukraine; Riots Spreading To Major Cities

” In a shocking video released today on the Internet, special government police force “Berkut” beat up and humiliate an arrested activist on Grushevsky Street in Ukraine’s capital, Kiev. The man, wearing a “Ukrainian cossack” haircut, is severely beaten and can be seen with bruises and lacerations all over his naked body. The police strip him to his socks in 25 degrees Farenheit weather, scream insults, and force him to hold a small shovel as they take pictures.

Other videos of clashes and police brutality against the pro-European protesters are circulating the Internet.

Protesters are fighting back by publishing the names of policemen and their officials responsible for the murders and brutality on social media, calling for vengeance. The flyer below promises $5,000 for the information about the “Berkut” officer who murdered activist Sergei Nigoyan and $100,000 “for the head of that scumbag.” “

Protesters Hold Mirrors To Police, Force Them To Stare At Their Own Reflections

” In the Ukraine, hundreds of citizens have been protesting because they are unhappy with their government.

When the protests started, there was numerous incidents of police brutality. One such attack was caught on camera:

In response to what they thought was excessive force, the protesters in the Ukraine now bring mirrors with them. They are doing this to literally force police to look at their own reflections and face what they have turned into.”

” Many Ukrainian citizens claim that cops in their country only protect the government — not citizens, communities, and children.”

Torches Lit, Ukrainian Nationalists Celebrate An Inconvenient Hero

” The pro-Western protests on Kiev’s Independence Square turned into a New Year’s celebration last week, transforming the world’s biggest ongoing protest into a huge party. But after some 200,000 people looked hopefully to the upcoming year amid fireworks, dancing and mass singing of the national anthem at the “Euromaidan,” the dawn of 2014 saw a different kind of torch-lit protest.

On Jan. 1, Thousands of Ukrainian nationalists marched in Kiev and the western city of Lviv to honor the what would have been the 105th birthday of Stepan Bandera, one of the most controversial figures in modern Ukrainian history — a Nazi collaborator, freedom fighter, and, to some, a terrorist.

The marches, and their hero, highlight the profound complexities in today’s Ukraine, where past allegiances, prospects for the future, and a strong desire for independence — after centuries under foreign rule — all run into each other, creating a web difficult to untangle.

The anti-government opposition is far from a unified, “Western-minded,” liberal front that would provide an easy narrative for would-be allies in the West. While the Maidan’s leadership includes the charismatic boxing champion Vitali Klitschko (who became the face of the fight against President Victor Yanukovych’s regime), it also boasts Oleg Tyagnibok, a notoriously racist leader of the far-right Svoboda party.”

Ukraine Protests: Outrage As Police Attack Kiev Barricades

” Thousands of riot police carried out a co-ordinated attack on barricades in Kiev during the dead of night on Wednesday – a determined and unexpected crackdown on protesters who have occupied the centre ofUkraine‘s capital for the past fortnight.

As temperatures fell to -13C (-55F) during the coldest night of the winter to date, columns of riot police closed in on Independence Square, hub of the protests that erupted after President Viktor Yanukovych pulled out of an association pact with the EU that had been due for signing at a summit in Vilnius last month. Shortly after 1am battalions of police approached the vast square from all sides and began to dismantle the makeshift barricades that have been erected in recent days.

Ukraine’s prime minister, Mykola Azarov, said later on Wednesday the operation by police was a question of clearing the roads. “No force will be applied against peaceful protesters. Do you understand this? Calm down!” he said as he opened a government meeting.

Police pulled out of the square on Wednesday morning, even as more protesters arrived. “

A road clearing operation ? Sure … once again we witness Statist violence in the name of “public safety” .
