From ISIS To Unemployment: What Do Americans Know?

Modest Partisan Differences in News Knowledge

” The latest Pew Research Center News IQ quiz measures the public’s awareness of key facts in the news: from questions about conflicts around the world to the current minimum wage and the chair of the Federal Reserve. (Before reading this report, take the quiz yourself by clicking here.)

The survey finds that a large majority (73%) is able to correctly identify the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour (from a list of other amounts ranging from $5.25 to $12.50).

In addition, amid ongoing U.S.-led airstrikes against Islamic militants in the Middle East, 67% can identify Syria as one of the countries in which the militant group known as ISIS currently controls territory (from a list that included Pakistan, Kuwait and Egypt). And 60% know that Ukraine was once part of the Soviet Union; the other choices were Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Scandinavia.”

The most interesting part of the survey concerns the partisan divide in news awareness . Contrary to MSM memes those on the right are , overall , better informed than their “betters” on the left … see chart above .

” Differences in news knowledge across partisan groups are relatively modest, though Republicans tend to do somewhat better than Democrats overall.

Republicans are 16 points more likely than Democrats to answer the Common Core question correctly (58% vs. 42%). And 57% of Republicans identify the oil industry as a primary driver of growth in North Dakota, compared with 42% of Democrats.”

Swiss To Vote On $25 An Hour Minimum Wage

” A vote on Sunday to establish a minimum wage of $25 an hour would make mostly immigrants here in agriculture, housekeeping, and catering among the world’s highest paid unskilled workforce.

The vote comes after hundreds of fast-food workers walked off their jobs in many U.S. cities and in more than 30 countries on Thursday in a protest for higher wages. If the Swiss proposal passes, the country would have the highest minimum wage in the world.

But some who would be eligible for the higher wage worry that it may do more harm than good.

Luisa Almeida is an immigrant from Portugal who works in Switzerland as a housekeeper and nanny. Almeida’s earnings of $3,250 a month are below the proposed minimum wage but still much more than she’d make in Portugal.

Since she is not a Swiss citizen, she cannot vote but if she could, “I would vote ‘no’,” she says.

If my employer had to pay me more money, he wouldn’t be able to keep me on and I’d lose the job.” “

If this minimum wage law passes get ready to see Switzerland’s low unemployment rate skyrocket as all wages will necessarily have to rise . If your average laborer is making a grand a week where does that leave the tradesmen and civil servants ?

Charles Krauthammer Explains Obama’s Lawlessness in 50 Seconds

” The executive order debate resurfaced when Obama announced at his State of the Union address, “I will issue an Executive Order requiring federal contractors to pay their federally funded employees a fair wage of at least $10.10 an hour.”

Heritage Foundation Legal Fellow Andrew Kloster, who has argued that Obama’s unilaterally raising the minimum wage is likely unlawful, told The Foundry that Krauthammer is absolutely correct that the President Obama has taken an unlawful “go it alone” approach.

“ Whether it is making unlawful payments to congressional health care plansmaking recess appointments in violation of the Constitution, or urging federal contractors to violate the WARN Act,” Kloster said, “this administration has taken numerous actions that are abusive or plainly unlawful.””

SOTU Least Watched In 14 Years, Snowden Gets Nobel Nomination, Dems Lose Ground In Party ID

It’s amazing to me how many people think that voting to have the government give poor people money is compassion. Helping poor and suffering people is compassion. Voting for our government to use guns to give money to help poor and suffering people is immoral, self-righteous, bullying, laziness.” — Penn Jillette “

Maybe they’re just sick of Washington politics. Whatever the reason, the 2014 State of the Union address was the least watched since 2000. It’s not like Americans missed much. Welfare Payouts Top $20 Per Hour In Eight States

welfare payouts

” In 35 states, welfare, housing assistance and other benefits pays more than a minimum wage job, according to a new study by the Cato Institute. The study also found that in 13 states, the payout is more than $15 per hour.

Of course, this study doesn’t take into account that not everyone on public assistance receives all of the programs. But if they did, their payout would be significantly higher than even a starting teacher’s salary in 11 states or a computer programmer in 3 states.

The states with the highest welfare payouts – more than $20 per hour – are Hawaii, with payments equaling $29.13 per hour, DC at $24.43 per hour, Massachusetts at $24.30 , Connecticut at $21.33, New York at $21.01 per hour, New Jersey at $20.89 per hour, Rhode Island at $20.83 per hour and Vermont at $20.36 per hour.

Minimum Wage Strike Backfires, Employer Closes

” Protesters from coast to coast have engaged in recent efforts to artificially raise the minimum wage to unsustainable levels. If successful, these shortsighted strikers will ensure massive layoffs and a sharp spike in retail prices to absorb the increased operating expense.

Sometimes, however, the strikes themselves can lead to similar unintended consequences. Such was the case with Snarf’s Sub Shop in Chicago, which was the site of a minimum wage rally earlier this month.

After four straight days of dormancy due to the strike outside, the sandwich shop apparently had great difficulty recovering. Though the store’s management denies any correlation, the business’ 20 employees received an electronic pink slip just two days before Christmas.”

Nader: ‘Has There Been A Bigger Con Man In The White House Than Barack Obama?’

” During the 2008 campaign, Obama pledged to cut the federal deficit in half in four years; he increased it by nearly 50%. He promised to “reach across the aisle and work with the other side”; he has spent 4 1/2 years blaming Republicans for everything under the sun. He promised “the most transparent administration in history”; we all know how that turned out, don’t we?

At issue for Nader was Obama’s pledge during this year’s State of the Union address to call on Congress to raise the minimum wage to $9.00 an hour and peg future adjustments to inflation, which O said was an issue on which he and Mitt Romney agreed.

When Nader was asked by Goodman if Obama’s proposal wasn’t, in fact, what he was calling for as well, he responded:

“Yeah, has there – has there been a bigger con man in the White House than Barack Obama? He hasn’t lifted a finger since he made those statements. And when he made the statements in the 2008 campaign, he said nothing for four years on raising the minimum wage. He made no pressure on Congress. He hasn’t even unleashed people in his own White House on this issue.” “

While we totally disagree with Nader on nearly everything including his spiel on the minimum wage , we certainly again that there has “never been a bigger con-man in the White House” .

Elizabeth Warren: Minimum Wage Would Be $22 An Hour If It Had Kept Up With Productivity

” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) made a case for increasing the minimum wage last week during a Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions hearing, in which she cited a study that suggested the federal minimum wage would have stood at nearly $22 an hour today if it had kept up with increased rates in worker productivity.

“If we started in 1960 and we said that as productivity goes up, that is as workers are producing more, then the minimum wage is going to go up the same. And if that were the case then the minimum wage today would be about $22 an hour,” she said, speaking to Dr. Arindrajit Dube, a University of Massachusetts Amherst professor who has studied the economic impacts of minimum wage. “So my question is Mr. Dube, with a minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, what happened to the other $14.75? It sure didn’t go to the worker.” ”

Memo to Senator Fauxcahontas … they are minimum wage jobs in the first place because they are low-skill , low paying and low-production jobs . What do you know about honest work and productivity anyway ? Flipping foreclosures , lying on resumes and practicing law without a license hardly makes you an expert in the employment/job creation field now , does it ?

Busting 5 Myths About the Minimum Wage

” When someone says “minimum wage,” what comes to mind?

Do you think of teenagers flipping burgers? Or a single parent trying to feed several kids?

While President Obama and other proponents of a higher minimum wage want you to visualize that single parent, the truth is that a burger-flipping teenager or college student with a part-time job paints a much more accurate picture of the minimum wage in America.

In his State of the Union address, President Obama called for an increase in the minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 an hour. Today, Democrats in Congress are arguing that the President didn’t go far enough, proposing an increase to more than $10 an hour.”

Explaining To The Left (as if they’ll listen) Why Raising The Minimum Wage Does Not Pay For Itself

” On the one hand, this is so elementary, it’s hard to believe anyone argues with it. But when you’re dealing with ideological true believers, you know they will argue withanything you say if it doesn’t line up with the faith. So don’t assume you’ve won the argument just because you point this out: Raising the minimum wage will worsen unemployment because, plain and simple, it raises the cost of labor.

Not only that, but it raises by statute the cost of the least productive laborers out there. There’s a reason minimum wage earners get the minimum. Their contribution represents minimal value. An employer who decides to hire such a person is accepting lack of experience, lack of training and lack of maturity, and is deciding to invest some time developing the worker and getting whatever minimal contribution they can make until they see if the investment pays off in the person’s improvement. Usually you’re not talking about people trying to support a family. Usually you’re talking about a 16-year-old kid. If you make it even more expensive than it already is to hire such people, businesses simply will not do it.”

DO YOU REALLY KNOW THE LEFT-WING PAST OF OBAMA’S LABOR SECRETARY HILDA SOLIS?

Read the whole thing to understand just how effective the ” long march ” towards progressivism has been . The irony of the sixties hippies who preached death to authority morphing into statists par excellence is almost too much to bear .

” While you may know Hilda Solis as the current U.S. Labor Secretary, what you might not know is that she was once a left-wing politician with the backing of organized labor and radical causes. Research into the student newspaper of East Los Angeles College, one of the colleges of her former Los Angeles congressional district, reveal as much.

Solis’s activism, in fact, wasn’t always backed by the keenest of social science and often reflected a far left viewpoint. Take these few examples:

  • August 25th, 1999, she participated in an “environmental justice” lecture.
  • In October 1987 she participated in a Compton Community College conference entitled “Women Moving Progressively Into the 21st Century” alongside accused cop killer accomplice and Communist Angela Davis.
  • Her most strident activism came on behalf of affirmative action and increases in the minimum wage law. On October 9, 1996, Solis, then California’s first Latina state senator, equated support for the minimum wage law to support for civil rights at a pro-racial preferences rally, according to accounts in the Campus News, the student newspaper of East Los Angeles College.

At that rally, Solis linked opposition to efforts to undo racial preferences to a minimum wage ballot initiative. “Solis asked people to support Proposition 210, the minimum wage bill. It’s not that different [from opposing Proposition 209, the anti-racial preferences ballot initiative], because most of the people who get minimum wage, are minorities,” wrote Laurie Epinosa for the student newspaper on October 9, 1996. “
