Weasel On Woodpecker: ‘How I Snapped The Photo’ BBC News

From BBC News

” The amateur photographer who took a picture of a weasel on the back of a woodpecker mid-flight says it is “almost a dream”.

Martin Le-May took it while walking with his wife in Hornchurch Country Park in east London. He said “It’s almost a dream that you take a photograph that lots and lots of people not only look at but like”. “

Watching the video and hearing Mr Le-May explain the circumstances of the tiny weasel attempting to take down prey nearly twice it’s size immediately brought to mind this old Merry Melodies cartoon :

Like the weasel , this tiny chickenhawk had the “cojones” to tackle prey many times his size , namely Foghorn Leghorn … LOL

Young Black Hole Had Monstrous Growth Spurt

” A black hole that grew to gargantuan size in the Universe’s first billion years is by far the largest yet spotted from such an early date, researchers have announced. The object, discovered by astronomers in 2013, is 12 billion times as massive as the Sun, and six times greater than its largest-known contemporaries. Its existence poses a challenge for theories of the evolution of black holes, stars and galaxies, astronomers say.

Light from the black hole took 12.9 billion years to reach Earth, so astronomers see the object as it was 900 million years after the Big Bang. That “is actually a very short time” for a black hole to have grown so large, says astronomer Xue-Bing Wu of Peking University in Beijing. He led an international collaboration that describes the discovery in Nature.

For its age, this black hole “is really much more massive than anything else we have seen so far”, says Christian Veillet, director of the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory in Tucson, Arizona.”

This dog has obviously done this before as it is absolutely tenacious in it’s defense of it’s turf against the cobra but that doesn’t matter to the animal rights nuts in the comments that would rather the cobra be free to maybe kill a child or other family member from the dog’s household .

This Traffic Jam Was Stuck In Belgian Forest For 70 Years

” These spooky apocalyptic images are not a scene from “Walking Dead”, they were actually taken at one of the biggest car cemeteries in the world – the Chatillion Car Graveyard, Belgium.

According to an urban legend these cars were left behind by US soldiers from World War II, who could not ship them back to the US so they decided to hide them in a forest until they could come back and retrieve them. The locals disagree and say that it’s simply an old car dump of vehicles made after the WWII.

At one point there were four car graveyards in Chatillon with as many as 500 retro vehicles. Unfortunately, most of the cars were stolen or removed by the locals and due to environmental issues the whole graveyards was cleared in 2010.”

Bumblebee In Spider’s Web Rescued By Other Bumblebee

Published on Jun 9, 2014

” A bumblebee fighting for its life in a spiders web is seemingly rescued by another bumblebee, which stings the spider. Filmed in my flat in east London. Did the 2nd bee save the 1st on purpose? Or was it just coincidence that 2 bees landed in the same web?

Massive Sandstorm Overruns Saudi Capital

riyadh sand storm

” A massive sandstorm overran Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh on Wednesday followed by heavy rain, bringing traffic to a halt and forcing people to stay indoors.”

This is a sand storm from 2012 just to give the reader some idea of what they are like .

400,000-Year-Old Clue To Human Origins

” Scientists have found the oldest DNA evidence yet of humans’ biological history. But instead of neatly clarifying human evolution, the finding is adding new mysteries.

In a paper in the journal Nature, scientists reported Wednesday that they had retrieved ancient human DNA from a fossil dating back about 400,000 years, shattering the previous record of 100,000 years.

The fossil, a thigh bone found in Spain, had previously seemed to many experts to belong to a forerunner of Neanderthals. But its DNA tells a very different story. It most closely resembles DNA from an enigmatic lineage of humans known as Denisovans. Until now, Denisovans were known only from DNA retrieved from 80,000-year-old remains in Siberia, 4,000 miles east of where the new DNA was found.”

10 Fascinating Facts About Ravens

” Edgar Allan Poe knew what he was doing when he used the raven instead of some other bird to croak out “nevermore” in his famous poem. The raven has long been associated with death and dark omens, but the real bird is somewhat of a mystery. Unlike its smaller cousin the crow, not a lot has been written about this remarkable bird. Here are 10 fascinating facts about ravens.

When it comes to intelligence, these birds rate up there with chimpanzees and dolphins. In one logic test, the raven had to get a hanging piece of food by pulling up a bit of the string, anchoring it with its claw, and repeating until the food was in reach. Many ravens got the food on the first try, some within 30 seconds. In the wild, ravens have pushed rocks on people to keep them from climbing to their nests, stolen fish by pulling a fishermen’s line out of ice holes, and played dead beside a beaver carcass to scare other ravens away from a delicious feast.

If a raven knows another raven is watching it hide its food, it will pretend to put the food in one place while really hiding it in another. Since the other ravens are smart too, this only works sometimes.”

Zombies Vs Animals: Naturalist Explains How Nature Would Annihilate the Living Dead

” Nature would fend off any potential zombie apocalypse to plague the planet, a leading naturist has said.

David Mizejewski, with the National Wildlife Federation, has written an essay explaining why nature would prevail over zombies in the event of a zombie plague.

Writing for Boing Boing, he wrote: “Zombies are scary. We humans are evolutionarily pre-programmed to abhor the dead bodies of our own species. It’s a natural reaction, helping healthy individuals avoid fatal pathogens.

“The thought of being eaten alive is a natural fear, and when it’s your own species doing the eating, it’s even more terrifying.

“Relax. Next time you’re lying in bed, unable to fall asleep thanks to the vague anxiety of half-rotten corpses munching on you in the dark, remember this: if there was ever a zombie uprising, wildlife would kick its ass.” “

3-Billion-Yr-Old Ancient Water Tastes Salty Scientist Says

” A team of scientists recently reported finding an ancient pocket of water flowing nearly two miles beneath the surface of the Earth. A member of the team Barbara Sherwood Lollar has admitted tasting the water and describes it as “terribly salty.”

The water dating back billions of years may predate the emergence of complex life forms on Earth and may give clues about the origin of life. It was found flowing through fractures in 2.7-billion-year-old sulphide deposits in a copper and zinc mine near Timmins, Ontario, about 7,875 feet beneath the Earth’s surface.
According to the team of scientists in a paper titled “Deep fracture fluids isolated in the crust since the Precambrian era,” published in the journal Nature on May 15, 2013, the “fluids… can be billions of years old and preserve a record of the fluid chemistry and environment at the time of mineralization.”

The team of scientists from the universities of Manchester, Lancaster, Toronto and McMaster, analyzing the water isolated beneath the surface of the Earth for billions of years have described it as being like “trapped time capsules.”

The scientists say the water is at least 1.5 billion years old and may be even much older, dating back to the time of the formation of the rocks holding it. Nature reports that the scientists were able to determine that the water was at least 1.5 billion years old based on an analysis of the isotopes of natural gases in the water.”
