Don’t Send Your Kid To The Ivy League

” When I speak of elite education, I mean prestigious institutions like Harvard or Stanford or Williams as well as the larger universe of second-tier selective schools, but I also mean everything that leads up to and away from themthe private and affluent public high schools; the ever-growing industry of tutors and consultants and test-prep courses; the admissions process itself, squatting like a dragon at the entrance to adulthood; the brand-name graduate schools and employment opportunities that come after the B.A.; and the parents and communities, largely upper-middle class, who push their children into the maw of this machine. In short, our entire system of elite education.

I should say that this subject is very personal for me. Like so many kids today, I went off to college like a sleepwalker. You chose the most prestigious place that let you in; up ahead were vaguely understood objectives: status, wealth“success.” What it meant to actually get an education and why you might want oneall this was off the table. It was only after 24 years in the Ivy Leaguecollege and a Ph.D. at Columbia, ten years on the faculty at Yalethat I started to think about what this system does to kids and how they can escape from it, what it does to our society and how we can dismantle it. “

Read also Newsweek’s piece on The New Republic’s hypocrisy regarding their hefty percentage of Ivy League staff .

” But if such a student seeks a job at The New Republic, that move won’t be a wise one. We’ve sized up TNR’s lengthy editorial masthead (read: not the business or sales teams) and noticed that 46 out of 91 staffers hold undergraduate or graduate degrees (or both) from an Ivy League institution. Readers who attended a college with a robust core curriculum that forces you to take a math class—Columbia University, for instance—will note that that amounts to more than half of the masthead. Here’s the breakdown.”

NEW REPUBLIC CLAIMS NRA POWER DIMINISHED, GUN OWNERSHIP DECLINING

” The New Republic contends that while the group has “real clout,” its power “has been more a matter of entrenched wisdom than actual fact.” In other words, the NRA only looks strong because it has long been assumed strong. But in reality, individuals with an “F rating” from the NRA have won Senate and gubernatorial seats recently, demonstrating that the NRA isn’t really that influential after all.

The New Republic also claims an alleged decline in ownership of firearms proves the gun lobby is losing. In reality, however, gun ownership is skyrocketing, and not just with gun owners whom the mainstream media loves to depict as backwoods hayseed: women from all walks of life and male first-time gun owners are also increasing.

From the beginning of 2009 through May 3, there were 73,219,367 background checks for gun purchases. This number only indicates the number of purchasers, not the number of guns purchased. The number of guns purchased could have been two or three times that number. The years 2011 and 2012 both saw the highest number of background checks of any year on record; already 2013 is on pace to have the highest number of background checks ever.”

White House Releases Photo Of Obama Firing Gun

Obama firing gun photo: President Barack Obama shoots clay targets at Camp David, Aug. 4, 2012. IMAGE

Just asking , but does anyone have a gun that smokes from two directions ?

” Two days before President Barack Obama’s first trip outside Washington to promote his gun-control proposals, the White House tried to settle a brewing mystery when it released a photo to back his claim to be a skeet shooter.

Obama had set inquiring minds spinning when, in an interview with The New Republic magazine, he answered “yes” when asked if he had ever fired a gun. The admission came as a surprise to many.

“Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time,” Obama said in the interview released last weekend, referring to the official presidential retreat in rural Maryland, which he last visited in October while campaigning for re-election. Asked whether the entire family participates, the president said: “Not the girls, but oftentimes guests of mine go up there.”

Few could recall Obama ever talking about firing a gun or going skeet shooting “all the time.” “

New Republic Falls For Fake Picture Of Obama Skeet Shooting On Parody Site

” The liberal New Republic magazine, eager to prove that President Obama participates in skeet shooting even if Jay Carney can’t corroborate it, tweeted a picture of Obamaappearing to hold a shotgun while at Camp David on Tuesday. Shortly after tweeting it, the New Republic deleted it.

The reason? The photo was fake, and came from a parody website called whitehouse.gov1.info.

The site clearly says, “not the White House” on the top of the page, with the banner, “parody of whitehouse.gov.” ”

OBAMA THREATENS FOX NEWS, LIMBAUGH

” But what of his Republican opposition? That opposition, said Obama, has to be forced to embrace his positions:

And I think if you talk privately to Democrats and Republicans, particularly those who have been around for a while, they long for the days when they could socialize and introduce bipartisan legislation and feel productive. So I don’t think the issue is whether or not there are people of goodwill in either party that want to get something done. I think what we really have to do is change some of the incentive structures so that people feel liberated to pursue some common ground. One of the biggest factors is going to be how the media shapes debates. If a Republican member of Congress is not punished on Fox News or by Rush Limbaugh for working with a Democrat on a bill of common interest, then you’ll see more of them doing it.”
