Safety Group Claims 303 Deaths Linked To Recalled GM Cars

GM Recall Scandal

” An auto safety group says federal data show there were 303 deaths in recalled General Motors cars in which airbags did not deploy, but GM says the report misrepresents raw information about crashes.

The Center for Auto Safety, a public interest group started by Ralph Nader and Consumers Union, has written to federal safety regulators charging that the number of accidents is far greater than being admitted by GM.

General Motors says it has traced a defect in an ignition switch to at least 12 deaths. The problem caused the car to shut off while driving — disabling the airbag system.

But GM says disputes Center for Auto Safety’s suggestion, reported Thursday night by the New York Times, that all those deaths are tied to the problems with the ignition.”

This is a recall that was ten years in the making and there are accusations that GM knew about the problem and covered it up .

” The ignition recall covers the 2005-07 Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5, the 2003-07 Saturn Ions, the 2006-07 Chevrolet HHRs, the 2006-07 Pontiac Solstice, and the 2007 Saturn Sky.

Part of what is being investigated is whether GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ignored signs of problems for too long, which resulted in the subsequent crashes.

GM’s own filings with NHTSA show that its engineers were aware of a problem at least as early as 2004 and perhaps as early as 2001, yet it did not order a recall of 1.6 million vehicles worldwide until February of this year.”

This is what happens when the government has a vested interest in a business’s success . Safety advocates are accusing the NHTSA of malfeasance in not properly investigating the traffic deaths in a timely manner .

” The Center for Auto Safety complaint about the 303 deaths is in a letter to NHTSA in which it complains that the agency fell down in the job in not requiring GM to order a recall much earlier before most of those fatal crashes.

“The only way NHTSA could not see a defect trend is if it closed its eyes,” said the group’s letter.”

Evidence Mounts That GM Delayed Recall With Deadly Results

” New evidence is surfacing that General Motors has known for years about the deadly defects in its vehicles (as I suggested here last week) that are just now being recalled. The defects have led to the deaths of at least six people and are the basis of an ongoing lawsuit against GM.

The deadly recall delay by GM has garnered the attention of Mainstream Media as usually GM-friendly sources like USA TodayThe New York Times, CNN Money and even CBS Evening News have rightfully decided that the accusations of deplorable behavior by GM deserve to be shared with the public. It is time for GM to explain its handling of the delayed recall that only came after a lawsuit settlement with one of the victims.”

So Obama’s Government Motors has been covering up a manufacturing defect that has been known for years and has resulted in numerous deaths . Why are we not surprised at this revelation ?

Oh yes , it must be because the GM bailout is President Transparency’s signature triumph . What are a few lives in fly-over country when the legacy of the emperor is at stake ?

” A Georgia attorney is alleging that GM knew about the problem since 2004 but failed to undertake a recall until mid-February, when GM (GM, Fortune 500) recalled 778,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 cars. The cars’ ignition switch could easily be bumped or shaken out of the “on” position. When that happened, the engine would shut off leading to a loss of power steering and braking assistance. Also, in the event of a collision, the airbags would not work.

GM acknowledged at least 6 deaths resulting from the problem.”

GM’s own engineers uncovered the problem as early as 2005 but someone made the decision to stifle that information yet no one seems to have died as a result until after General Motors became Government motors . Yet even as the State took over the company and the death toll mounted nothing was done that could have upset the carefully crafted image of a company brought back from the brink of disaster , a phoenix , arising from the ashes on the wings of a big government vulture .

” A GM engineer experienced the problem while test-driving one of the vehicles in 2004 according to deposition transcripts provided to CNNMoney by Cooper. GM’s engineers concluded there was a problem with the ignition switch in 2005, the depositions showed.”

Nine years … that’s what it took for GM to admit it’s error and launch a recall , and this from one of the most closely watched and scrutinized corporations in America over the past decade . As a matter of fact for half that time the company has essentially been a subsidiary of the US government given Obama’s “investment” of our tax dollars in the preservation of his union cronies jobs .

Might that not make the Federal government a co-conspirator in the cover-up and a co-defendant in the class action suit gathering steam as we speak ? We’ve already seen how collusion on “creative accounting” techniques has allowed GM to “repay the loans” from the taxpayers in an amazingly short time . Time enough in fact , to serve as a campaign medal in 2012 , no ?

” The fact that the death that allegedly resulted from the delayed recall occurred in 2010 puts “New” GM in a position where they can not weasel out of responsibility by claiming that “Old” GM was at fault. GM emerged as a “new” company in 2009 after their Obama-manipulated bankruptcy process and any claims by victims of “old” GM were washed away along with the investments of GM’s shareholders and bondholders. GM may also have to answer to its friends in Washington, as it would not go unnoticed if NHTSA does not question the actions of GM as well.”

So much for the State and it’s highly touted position as overseer of public safety. There is time honored wisdom in not allowing the watched and the watchers to become one in the same , a lesson who’s truth fades as the the State insinuates itself deeper into the affairs of business and health .

” The public should be aware of GM’s reprehensible behavior regarding its botched recall. People have died, and more are at risk because of GM’s refusal to recall all defective vehicles. Let’s hope that continued pressure from media sources encourages GM to start acting in an ethical manner. TV networks should not shy away from asking tough questions about GM’s recall scandal. Money and political power should not shield a corporation that seems to put profits above human lives and GM should be held responsible for its actions.”

While we are considering placement of fault we would be remiss if we failed to make note of the fact that the people’s self-appointed “watchdogs” in the media have been less than diligent in uncovering this story in the first place . Since this scandalous tale plays out over nearly a decade it seems inconceivable to us that the MSM has not had an inkling of this tragic course of events until the present time .

That is of course unless the press , in the pursuit of their primary duty of running damage control for the current administration , knew and deemed it not in the best interests of the candidate public to be informed of potential deadly cars produced by their boy’s chosen corporate success story .

North Texas Drivers Stopped At Roadblock Asked For Saliva, Blood

” Some drivers along a busy Fort Worth street on Friday were stopped at a police roadblock and directed into a parking lot, where they were asked by federal contractors for samples of their breath, saliva and even blood.

It was part of a government research study aimed at determining the number of drunken or drug-impaired drivers.

“It just doesn’t seem right that you can be forced off the road when you’re not doing anything wrong,” said Kim Cope, who said she was on her lunch break when she was forced to pull over at the roadblock on Beach Street in North Fort Worth.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is spending $7.9 million on the survey over three years, said participation was “100 percent voluntary” and anonymous.”

Voluntary indeed . This woman didn’t feel like she had any choice in the matter .

” But Cope said it didn’t feel voluntary to her — despite signs saying it was.

“I gestured to the guy in front that I just wanted to go straight, but he wouldn’t let me and forced me into a parking spot,” she said.

Once parked, she couldn’t believe what she was asked next.”

Does anyone really believe that the results would be anonymous and confidential ? Does the government ever relinquish personal data once they get their hands on it ? Of course not … not going to happen … and what of the constitutionality of randomly pulling people over that are suspected of committing no crimes ? Welcome to the world of The State uber alles . Shades of thirties Germany anyone ? Or fifties USSR ?

Obama Bypasses Congress to Mandate Black Boxes for All Cars — Beginning in ’14

” Bypassing Congress, the Obama administration has issued a proposed administrative rule, which if adopted, would mandate the installation of “black boxes” in all automobiles and light trucks beginning in 2014.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed the regulation on Dec. 7, which it said “would capture valuable safety-related data in the seconds before and during a motor vehicle crash.”

The proposed standard would require automakers to install event data recorders (EDRs) – so-called “black box devices” — to collect specific safety related data in all light passenger vehicles beginning Sept. 1, 2014.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said approximately 96 percent of model year 2013 passenger cars and light-duty vehicles are already equipped with black-box capability.

“By understanding how drivers respond in a crash and whether key safety systems operate properly, NHTSA and automakers can make our vehicles and our roadways even safer,” LaHood said in a news release. “This proposal will give us the critical insight and information we need to save more lives.” “

NHTSA To Push Mandatory Data Recorders In Cars

This little gadget will allow the government to keep tabs on your every movement in your “private” automobile , and at the low , low cost of only $4-5000.00 per vehicle .

” If you bought a car within the past few years, chances are it’s spying on you. Devices known as event data recorders (EDR) tap into your car’s network of sensors, and dump a stream of data in the event of a crash—including the vehicle’s speed, throttle/brake pedal position, and seat belt use.

Historically, the issue of who owns EDR data and who can access it has been left up to the states, with only a dozen enacting laws regarding EDR data use. But today, the AP reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will propose regulations mandating automakers to install event data recorders on all new vehicles—turning EDR data ownership into a national issue.

Like any information-gathering technology, EDR is a double-edged sword. While it can help detect accidents and call for help, as well as provide auto engineers with a bevy of data to improve crash safety, its information has also been used against drivers. In one example in 2007, EDR data revealed that the driver carrying then-Gov. Jon Corzine of New Jersey in a Chevy Suburban was traveling 91 mph before it struck a white pickup and critically injured Corzine. ”
