Planet Of The Llamas

” On Thursday, I kept my weekly date on The Hugh Hewitt Show, just in time for the big news of the day:

HUGH HEWITT: Now we’ve got a lot to cover. We’ve got to cover llamas, the Oscars and the Islamic State, not to mention Chris Christie, so I’ve got to go fast. Did you by chance watch the llama drama on Fox today?

MARK STEYN: (laughing) Yeah, the llamas on the llam. You can joke, Hugh, but I think the llamapocalypse is upon us. I looked out in the yard, out of the window at the yard about 20 minutes ago, and there were just nine llamas there, and I thought that’s unusual for New Hampshire in winter. I just looked out the window now, and there’s 17 llamas between me and the car. So I think, you know, this is some Planet of the Llamas…

  HH: (laughing)

MS: In the words of Charlton Heston, ‘Take your hands off me you damned, dirty llama.’ This is how it begins.

We also discussed Dennis Miller’s observation that the Oscar statuette looks like Vladimir Putin, and Lady Gaga’s Academy performance of “The Sound Of Music”:

MS: Well, I don’t think Lady Gaga is actually a bad singer of those kinds of songs. I rather regret that she got mixed up with Tony Bennett, because he’ll duet with anybody. I mean… he’s done a double CD with my plumber. I didn’t know it. My plumber was working in the room for 15 minutes, and Tony Bennett swung by, and they recorded seven numbers together. Tony Bennett releases three duet albums, in the course of this conversation, he’ll have released another duet album. You’ve probably done a duet album with Tony Bennett yourself, haven’t you? “

The Oscar Nominees, Mapped

Oscar Map

Click the image for interactive map

” Sunday night brings the 87th Academy Awards, but the social media conversation about the nominated films, actors and actresses has been going on for weeks. The maps below show which movies and people are winning the Facebook Oscar “conversation” from Jan. 1 to Feb. 16.

If Facebook chatter determined which film wins the Oscar for Best Picture on Sunday, “American Sniper” would grab the statue – and it wouldn’t be close. The film about the life and war experiences of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle has dominated conversation about the Oscar nominees on the social media platform across the country.

“ American Sniper” talk made up 80% or more of the Facebook discussion about the Best Picture nominees in 9 of every 10 counties. And, of course, the film scored big at the box office.

But click through the maps above and you’ll notice some differences in the patterns for other films that reveal how audiences can vary, depending factors such as racial composition and education level.”

Of course we all know that the “progressives” in LaLa land would never choose a movie that portrays the American soldier in an honorable light but read more and use the interactive maps for all the nominees at the Wall Street Journal

Conservatives Are Boobs When it Comes to Pop Culture

” Now that we are descending into nanny-state soft tyranny under the sure and certain leadership of our beloved Not-A-Dictator, we are going to need a Minister of All Cultures and my nominee is John Nolte of Breitbart’s Big Hollywood. First of all, I know Nolte so even under the new regime, I should be able to score copies of movies with all the offensive scenes still intact. And second of all, I’m beginning to think that he is the last sane man discussing pop culture in America except for me. And I’m not too sure about me.

Last week, the Noltenator ran a terrific piece defending funny man Seth MacFarlane from both left-wing and right-wing attacks on his off-beat, politically incorrect and also very amusing Academy Awards performance. Especially under fire was a song called “We Saw Your Boobs,” which named which actresses had exposed themselves in which movies. Critics on left and right called the song sexist, offensive, puerile, etc, and Nolte explained to them: shut the hell up.

” What strikes me as wrong-headed… is all this taking of offense and hurling of “ists.” I fear we’re becoming a nation of well-intentioned (sometimes) “Footloose” dads who see danger in harmless fun; where we cry “ist” to put a stop to things that make us uncomfortable; where — so “we don’t offend” and “for the good of others” – we build restrictions. And what happens in the process? We lose our own capacity for joy and that very healthy exercise known as laughing at ourselves.”

The Polluted Oscar Documentary Pool

” The cabal that chooses the 15 nominees for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature has issued its 2013 selections. Why was the the top-grossing documentary of 2012 — and the fourth most-successful documentary of all time – not on that expansive list?

Because it was “2016,” the film in which conservative author Dinesh D’Souza warns of a dark future for America if Barack Obama is re-elected. The film’s producer, Gerald Molen, who’s already won an Oscar for “Schindler’s List,” was scandalized. “The action confirms my opinion that the bias against anything from a conservative point of view is dead on arrival in Hollywood.” “
