Target Shooting In America

Millions Of Shooters , Billions Of Dollars

This report by the National Shooting Sports Foundation provides fascinating reading . The number of shooters as well as the money and time spent at the range boggles the mind and should give pause to those who think that gun enthusiasts are a group to be ignored and trampled upon .

Target Shooting 2

” Whether it’s religiously practiced at a range or shooting club each week or participated as an occasional weekend activity in the countryside with friends, millions of Americans go target shooting each year. In fact, more Americans target shoot each year than the number of people who live in the entire state of Florida or New York. Target shooters may be having fun afield with each shot at a clay pigeon or paper target, but with each outing, they are also part of an economic force at work. In fact, their activities generate $9.9 billion in spending each year through the purchase of shooting-specific products and services and create hundreds of thousands of jobs directly associated with the sale and manufacture of those goods and the provision of those services. As such, target shooting provides fun and enjoyment for millions of Americans, but ultimately benefits millions more through its positive economic impact.”

Just take a look at these numbers …

Target Shooters

” Target shooting comes in many forms. Participants shoot to test their skills and prepare for competition, hone their defensive abilities, test their marksmanship with new loads and optics or to simply have fun!Just like owning multiple tools to perform different jobs, many target shooters own more than one firearm, each with a particular use or purpose. With 65 percent of all target shooters, rifles are the most often used firearm. Handguns follow closely behind. Shotguns are used by 48 percent of all participants with muzzleloaders used by 18 percent of the shooting public. Although more target shooters use rifles, handgun users actually spend more days shooting, in part due to greater availability of indoor ranges in urban areas where more people live. Participation in target shooting by state roughly parallels each state’s population. Even in largely urban areas, people are keen to try their hand with firearms. Despite restrictions that can make target shooting activities difficult to enjoy, target shooting remains extremely popular and continues to grow everywhere.”

Target shooting generates incredible amounts of revenue for businesses both firearm related and others as well as creating hundreds of thousands of jobs .

Kentucky Democratic Lawmaker Accidentally Fires Her Gun In Capitol Office

Kentucky Dem Shoots Gun In Office

“Why at that particular moment? I kind of had it on my brain. I had it in my purse,” Combs said.  “I carried it usually, and I thought I want to put that sucker away. And I did. And I was going through the process as I have been trained to do, had it pointed in the proper direction like I’ve been trained, was disarming it like Ive been trained to do, and …like I said I am a gun owner …. it happens.”

“The bullet struck the carpet and broke into pieces,” said House Speaker Greg Stumbo (D) Prestonsburg.  “And the primary piece and other pieces were found lodged in the bookcase, the wooden bookcase that sits next to her desk.”

Combs emphasized that “no one was in harm’s way. I made sure of that.”
“Rep. Greer was on the other side of the room,” she said.  “It was in the opposite direction.”

THE BEST .22 PISTOL? AN EXAMINATION OF MODERN RIMFIRE PISTOLS

” Everybody should own a .22 pistol.  They are incredibly valuable as a training tool, can be used to shoot competitively and can bag small game for dinner.  Add to the mix that they are just plain fun to shoot, and you’ve got a winner of a platform.  But the question becomes what is the best .22 pistol?

While there is no single best pistol for every person and situation, there are several exceptionally good guns on the market.  This is a look at currently produced .22 LR pistols, and not a look at every rimfire handgun ever made.  If I expanded the scope of the article to that level, I would have to include pistols like the old Hi Standard and Colt Woodsman.  Likewise, there are some exceptional revolver and .22 Magnum options on the market.

In no particular order, here are some of the best 22 pistols currently being sold. “

CCTV Of Family Research Council Shooting

” On August 15. 2012 at 10:46 a.m., Floyd Corkins entered the lobby of Family Research Council armed with a loaded semi-automatic pistol, 100 rounds of ammunition, and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches. FRC building manager Leo Johnson was temporarily manning the front desk at our Washington headquarters when a now-confessed terrorist intent on killing everyone in the building entered with a handgun and 100 rounds of ammunition. As he drew his gun, Leo courageously charged the attacker into oncoming gunfire. Even after sustaining a direct hit to his forearm, he subdued the attacker and wrestled the gun away from him.

Why did confessed terrorist Corkins choose Family Research Council as a target for his attack? In an FBI interrogation, Corkins admitted he found his target from the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list.”

Colt M45CQB United States Marine Corps 45 ACP Semi-Automatic Pistol

” In July of 2012, I was very pleased to learn that the United States Marine Corps had selected Colt to manufacture their new Close Quarters Battle Pistol. Marine Corps System Command (MARCORSYSCOM) awarded the contract to Colt Defense, LLC. On July 18, 2012 for an indefinite quantity/indefinite delivery order for the new pistols, to be issued to Force Recon and Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command units.

The USMC specified that these new pistols be accurate, and Colt delivered. The M45 has a match-grade barrel, and it is very well-fitted to the slide, as is the slide to the frame. For accuracy testing, I secured the M45 into my Ransom Master Series machine rest, and fired for accuracy at a distance of twenty-five yards, firing five-shot groups with several different types of ammunition. Accuracy varied, depending upon the ammunition tested, but the average of the five-shot groups fired with each type of ammunition measured from well under an inch to the largest group fired of the day, which stretched out to three inches. Most everything measured between one and one-half to two and one-half inches, with a couple of Buffalo Bore loads doing very well, as did my handload which consists of Rim Rock 200 grain LWSC bullets loaded over charges of 5.4 grains of Titegroup powder. I really like the Buffalo Bore 230 JHP load. This is the same hollowpoint bullet that Remington loads into their Ultimate Home Defense load, but the Buffalo Bore bullet leaves the muzzle running almost 200 feet-per-second (FPS) faster. The 230 grain hollowpoint at just over 1000 FPS is a dandy 45 ACP load, suitable for either fighting or hunting.”

Homeowner Kills Intruder: ‘I Was Fighting For My Life’

” HICKORY, N.C. – A Hickory man is grateful to be alive after he said an intruder broke down his front door, and tried to beat him and rob him Saturday morning.

Paul Ohle said he was in his kitchen around 9 a.m. when he heard his front door being kicked in.  Ohle said the man called for help, but as Ohle reached for his phone, the man wrestled it out of his hands.

Ohle now has nearly a dozen staples on the top and side of his head where he was beaten.

“I was fighting for my life,” he said.

Ohle said he finally broke free and ran to his bedroom, where he grabbed a revolver and shot the man to death.

“I hate I had to do it,” he said, “but I shot him.” “

3-Gun Nation has Changed the Face of Action-shooting Sports and Cheaper Than Dirt is Supporting the Charge!

 ” Getting Started

If your blood is pumping and you’re ready to try your hand at 3-Gun, getting started is easy. “Just show up! That is the best way to get involved with 3-Gun. You don’t need the latest gear or modified guns.

According to Pete Brown, “The easiest way to get started is with borrowed gear or what you already have in your gun safe. If you have pistol, rifle and shotgun—great! If not, bring what you have. At any rate, when you are on the range there will be so many different people willing to let try a piece a gear or give you a tip—the helpful nature of the community is incredible. Then—after you have a shot a match or two—you’ll have a much better idea of what you need (or want) and you will be able to make an informed decision from there.”

Cheaper Than Dirt’s Clint Upchurch is abusing the steel targets at a recent 3-Gun Nation event.

“There are several great sources these days to find a place to shoot or match. Of course you can go to3GunNation.com and click “The Sport of 3-Gun,” then click the “Get Started” link. Once there, you’ll have access to a wealth of information including contact information for clubs in every state, “ said Brown. “

Armed Clerk Ends New Jersey Crime Spree

” A trio allegedly responsible for 11 armed robberies over the past two weeks in Paterson, New Jersey, had their luck cut short when one victim, a store clerk armed with a handgun, decided to fight back Tuesday evening.

According to the Paterson Times, the string of robberies came to a close when two of the suspects, 23-year-old Jermaine Eason and 23-year-old Rayvon Wilson, both armed and wearing masks, entered Paterson’s El Jaya Deli & Grocery around 8 p.m. The owner of the store, who was behind the cash register, said one of the suspects kept an eye on two employees in the back of the store while the other was up front pointing a handgun at him.

He told the newspaper that he was frozen with fear as the suspect up front shouted, “Don’t look at me. Don’t look at my face. I will kill you. You’re going to be dead.”

The robbers then ransacked the store making off with $6,500 and several cartons of cigarettes, but as they made their way out the door an employee, the owner’s cousin, grabbed a gun, which he kept hidden behind the register, under a shelf of socks, and proceeded to chase the suspects. “

Cheaper Than Dirt Examines That Relative Newcomer , The .40S&W

Cartridge of the Week, the .40 Caliber Smith & Wesson, .40 SW

” Few cartridges can have an iconic tag. What is rarer is when experts call a cartridge iconic when still in its infancy. Twenty years is just an infancy when it comes to the world of cartridges. Of all the ones we have reviewed, this is the baby of the bunch. However, the baby has achieved as close to perfection as perfection can be. Perfection is the .40 Smith & Wesson.

A little lesson in physics. Don’t run for cover—we will make it very simple. The ultimate goal of a cartridge is to launch a bullet with enough energy to give us the desired result. For target practice, that is accuracy as well as precision. The two are not the same. That discussion is for another time and for target shooters, when the goal is repeat performance. Whereas, for those who are shooting something other than paper – getting the most bang for your buck- then Kinetic Energy is what we need to know a little more about. “

Gun of the Day

The Overlooked CZ 75

CZ 75

“I like gun stores. I like being in them, browsing through them, and buying from them. Trust me, I do plenty of business outside of my workplace, just as my competition does with us. In a recent trip to look at some handguns, I saw a new guy working behind the counter. I was curious about his recommendations and told him I was looking for a full-size duty pistol chambered in 9mm. He showed me the usual GlocksSpringfield XDs, and Smith & Wesson M&Ps. When I mentioned that I was possibly looking for something in the double-action/single-action family, he walked me right past the CZ 75s and straight to the Beretta 92s. When I asked him about the CZs, he said, “Oh, you wouldn’t want one of those, nobody ever comes in asking about them anymore.” “

More Citizen Justice

LA Times

“Two hooded men, their faces covered, went into a Florida Internet cafe Friday, hefting a baseball bat and toting a handgun. What they couldn’t have expected to encounter was Samuel Williams, a fleet-of-foot senior citizen with a gun.

The two suspects, identified by authorities as DuWayne Henderson and Davis Dawkins, went spinning and running after Williams, 71, dropped to one knee and aimed his .380.

Video of the incident at the Palms Internet Cafe in Ocala, Fla., shows two suspects directing patrons, who have their hands raised. Williams, a grandfatherly looking man in billed cap and shorts, stands, then bends briefly to one knee and begins shooting.”

“Speed and accuracy? Speed versus accuracy? Accurate speed?”

“There are so many ways to phrase these two elements in shooting. However, as in anything critical, these two components are always a priority. Think about it. Race car drivers have to be fast and accurate to win. All professional and Olympic athletes have to be accurate and fast to win. Shooting is no different. Hunting, competitive, defensive and combat shooting all have these two things in common: speed and accuracy.”
