Leatherman Launches Fashion Band With 25 Tools – And You Can Even Use It As A Watch Strap

” Forget carrying a Swiss Army Knife –  if you want to be prepared, all you really need is a bracelet.

Portland-based Leatherman Tool Group is about to launch wrist wear that hides 25 different tools.

Dubbed ‘Tread’, the bracelet is made of 17-4 stainless steel links which each hide two or three items such as wrenches and screwdrivers.”

Leatherman plans to start selling the bracelet sometime this summer, and also says it will include it in a watch design. No official pricing is offered on the tool, but one blog post claims it could be in the region of $200 (£130)

” ‘ The idea originated on a trip to Disneyland with my family,’ said Leatherman’s president Ben Rivera, who was an engineer with the company for 22 years. ‘ I was stopped at the gate by security for carrying a knife, when what they had actually seen was my Skeletool.

I was unwilling to give it up, so they made me take it all the way back to my hotel room.’ ‘ I knew there had to be another way to carry my tools with me that would be accepted by security,’ he said.”

CDC Issues Ebola Checklist: ‘Now Is The Time To Prepare’

Ebola Warning

” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warning hospitals and doctors that “now is the time to prepare,” has issued a six-page Ebola “checklist” to help healthcare workers quickly determine if patients are infected.

While the CDC does not believe that there are new cases of Ebola in the United States, the assumption in the checklist is that it is only a matter of time before the virus hits home.

For example, one part reads: “Encourage healthcare personnel to use a ‘buddy system’ when caring for patients.” Another recommends a process to report cases to top officials: “

Guide To Prepping

From OffTheGridNews

” The benefits of good fences, good dogs and good cats can’t be overstated in defending the homestead, but there are times when a firearm is the appropriate response. However, the choice of weapons for a given situation should be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis, and in the current societal dynamic your black gun is probably not going to be the best choice most of the time.

The bulk of the threats you will face are threats to your food production from wildlife. These threats run the gamut from small rodent pests, such as rats and mice, to large predators, like coyote and mountain lions, to deer in the orchard. Throw in the occasional bear, the increasing population of wolves in the lower 48, an assortment of winged marauders assaulting your crops and poultry, and the homestead becomes a war zone in a big hurry. With the wide variety of threats, however, defense is not a one gun-fits-all proposition.

That having been said, there is one gun that fills a large number of these needs, and provides the versatility to re-task should the threat suddenly change. The weapon of which I speak is the venerable 12 gauge shotgun. I love the 12 gauge above all other weapons. Granted, this is a personal preference and opinions will vary, but I stand by my assertion that the shogun is by far the most versatile weapon there is in the defense of home and homestead. I have often said that if I could have only one gun in a survival situation it would be a shotgun, and this holds true for “normal” times as well.

Why a shotgun? “

What The Front Sight Four Day Defensive Handgun Course Is Really Like (13 Pictures)

” Do you know how to shoot? How sure are you about that? I was pretty sure that I knew how to use a gun. After all, I’d received about 30 minutes of training from a police officer, had been to the range a few times, and I could pretty consistently put a bullet inside the silhouette on a target from 3 yards out.

Certainly, that’s better than nothing…but, is it really good enough to bet your life on?

I didn’t think so, which is why I was very interested in the Front Sight Firearms Training InstituteFront Sight is in the desert about 30 minutes outside of Pahrump, Nevada and it’s famous enough that my trainer in Myrtle Beach, SC had heard of it and was envious that I was getting to attend.

Front Sight basically works like a gym with a lifetime membership; you buy in and then you can come back as often as you want. You just have to pay for your ammo and any gear you rent.  I was told that initially its clientele had been mostly professional shooters like S.W.A.T. Team members, but over time its customer base has become a mix of highly trained professionals and novices. Roughly 1000 people a week go through Front Sight’s classes, which is something it considers to be one of its biggest advantages because the trainers get so much experience. The different courses cover everything from handguns to rifles to shotguns to hand-to-hand self-defense.”

No Longer Unthinkable: Should US Ready For ‘Limited’ Nuclear War?

” For more than 60 years, most Americans have thought of nuclear weapons as an all-or-nothing game. The only way to win is not to play at all, we believed, because any use of nukes will lead to Armageddon. That may no longer be the game our opposition is playing. As nuclear weapons proliferate to places that might not share our reluctance to use them in small numbers, however, the US military may face a “second nuclear age” of retail Armageddon for which it is utterly unprepared.

Adversaries are less likely to be deterred by America’s nuclear arsenal if they decide we won’t strike back with our big bombs in response to a limited, low-yield nuclear attack on US troops. It’s even less credible the US will retaliate massively if the adversary stages the nuclear strike on its own soil as a last-ditch defense against “regime change,” as Russia has wargamed and as Iran is no doubt tempted to do. Least credible of all  is US nuclear retaliation for a nuclear attack that doesn’t actually kill anyone: An enemy with even modest space capability can detonate a nuclear warhead high in the atmosphere, where it will generate a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (or HEMP) that disrupts the electronics on which the US military depends without actually taking any lives. (Congress has held hearings on electromagnetic pulse in the past, albeit focused on threats to the American homeland rather than US forces abroad, but legislative interest has waned since the 2012 defeat of Maryland Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, the Hill’s foremost hawk on EMP).

“We’ve gotten very used to bombing countries, going downtown and working our will” from Baghdad to Belgrade, Wilson said. When the target has nuclear weapons, however, even using  America’s fading conventional superiority starts looking a lot more dangerous.”

Surviving Urban Crisis

Hi, folks.

This one is going to be discussing the very good practice of adding dehydrated food to your survival stash.

We have used a dehydrator for over 15 years, an Excalibur model that has been utterly dependable.

After food items have been thoroughly dried using these machines, the food will remain preserved with no further energy costs and with all it’s nutrients and fiber intact for many years, with proper storage. excalibur dehydratorTypically, one puts the thinly sliced items on the trays or liquified food or fruit on the non-stick sheets into the unit, and run it at about 120 degrees Fahrenheit for 12 to 24 hours or until the item is crispy like potato chips or rolls up easily in the case of making fruit leathers.

The amount of food we’ve preserved with this machine is incredible. Anything one could cook can be dehydrated. You can save food directly…

The Chiappa Little Badger Survival Rifle (VIDEO)

” Chiappa makes interesting guns. While they may not have the most fans, nobody’s going to say Chiappa isn’t inventive. The Little Badger, a survival rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle, may just push them into the spotlight.

The Little Badger isn’t like most survival rifles — it takes minimalism and weight reduction to a level we’ve only seen inside the custom gun world — it’s a single-shot folding rifle with a wire stock and smattering of rails for accessories, like a mini red dot sight or a pistol grip. Since it’s a survival rifle, you may as well throw a flashlight on it.”

Today is the Day to Prepare

” Hurricane Sandy was briefly downgraded overnight to a tropical storm, then was re-classified as a hurricane this morning when a reconnaissance airplane found hurricane-force winds. It continues to look ugly on satellite, and might be re-downgraded to a tropical storm later today. Again, none of this matters. This temporary weakening trend was and is expected. It doesn’t (yet) suggest that the models are wrong, or that Sandy will underperform its forecasts (as Irene and Isaac did). That might happen — there’s always the possibility that models are wrong — but we have NO EVIDENCE to suggest that yet. As Bryan Norcross wrote yesterday, “Either every model is wrong or this is serious as a heart attack.”

Please read Norcross’s whole excellent post from last night, and understand that — distracting noise about downgrades and “hybridization” aside —Sandy remains a deadly serious threat, including to hyper-vulnerable New York City. “
