Why Our Children Don’t Think There Are Moral Facts

 

 

 

 

” What would you say if you found out that our public schools were teaching children that it is not true that it’s wrong to kill people for fun or cheat on tests? Would you be surprised?

  I was. As a philosopher, I already knew that many college-aged students don’t believe in moral facts. While there are no national surveys quantifying this phenomenon, philosophy professors with whom I have spoken suggest that the overwhelming majority of college freshmen in their classrooms view moral claims as mere opinions that are not true or are true only relative to a culture.

  What I didn’t know was where this attitude came from. Given the presence of moral relativism in some academic circles, some people might naturally assume that philosophers themselves are to blame. But they aren’t. There are historical examples of philosophers who endorse a kind of moral relativism, dating back at least to Protagoras who declared that “man is the measure of all things,” and several who deny that there are any moral facts whatsoever. But such creatures are rare. Besides, if students are already showing up to college with this view of morality, it’s very unlikely that it’s the result of what professional philosophers are teaching. So where is the view coming from?

  A few weeks ago, I learned that students are exposed to this sort of thinking well before crossing the threshold of higher education. When I went to visit my son’s second grade open house, I found a troubling pair of signs hanging over the bulletin board. They read:

Fact: Something that is true about a subject and can be tested or proven.

Opinion: What someone thinks, feels, or believes.

  Hoping that this set of definitions was a one-off mistake, I went home and Googled “fact vs. opinion.” The definitions I found online were substantially the same as the one in my son’s classroom. As it turns out, the Common Core standards used by a majority of K-12 programs in the country require that students be able to “distinguish among fact, opinion, and reasoned judgment in a text.” And the Common Core institute provides a helpful page full of links to definitions, lesson plans and quizzes to ensure that students can tell the difference between facts and opinions.

  So what’s wrong with this distinction and how does it undermine the view that there are objective moral facts? “

Only 19 Students Ready For College In Paterson NJ

 

 

 

 

 

” A paltry nineteen students who took the SAT from the Paterson (New Jersey) Public Schools were considered “college ready.”

This means they scored at least a 1500 out of 2400 on the exam.

MY 9 NJ.com reports:

Paterson resident Jason Williams is one of the lucky ones. He just graduated high school last year and has been enrolled in college since September, after taking the SAT’s three times determined to score over 1500. He says that the key to his success was not falling victim to the streets.

  Article author Tamara Laine writes that the 19 students figure “is truly shocking considering how large the school district is.” Indeed, according to the district’s Wikipedia entry, the district has twenty-one high schools, and a total student enrollment of 28,139. “

 

    Although we experienced some difficulty in coming up with a solid figure for the Paterson public high school enrollment numbers , according to the information on Wikipedia’s page we’ve arrived at a minimum of 4,684 students .

   If approximately half of that number are juniors and seniors , those taking the SATs , we calculate 2,342 students that took the college entrance exam . That translates into a 0.811% readiness rate … Less than 1 % . Shameful .

This is all the more disgraceful when one considers that Paterson has a 13 to 1 student/teacher ratio (among the lowest in the country) , the national average being 15.5 , and spends $18,891 per pupil which is 8.3% above the national average and ranks below only Alaska , DC and New York . Paterson School Spending

   While the reader ponders where all that money is being spent , take note of this story from Monday’s NorthJersey.com :

 

 

” Payroll records show the number of city school district employees making at least $125,000 has doubled over the past five years, an increase that comes as test scores for Paterson students remain among the lowest in the state.

  At present, 66 Paterson Public Schools employees make at least $125,000, the records show. During the 2010-11 school year, the district had 33 employees above the $125,000 mark.

  The rise has been a steady one, the records show. The number of salaries above $125,000 grew to 41 in 2011-12, to 53 the year after that and to 60 in 2013-14.”

 

 

    Gotta love that State provided “free” education … New Jersey tax payers are hardly getting their money’s worth , that’s for sure .

” The American people are low-information voters.

  But their lack of information doesn’t just apply to the candidates they vote for or the issues that are important to them; it also applies to some of the most basic founding principles of this country — up to and including the First Amendment.

  The First Amendment Center has conducted yearly studies asking people their opinions of certain freedoms and how far they extend. But before they get to that point, they ask people to simply name the freedoms enumerated in the First Amendment.

  The results, as the below (see above) chart shows, are somewhere between depressing and less-than-inspiring.”

 

     It comes as no surprise that the more the State spends on “education” the less informed our youth become . For two generations the education system has been moving away from basic history and civics and into all of the touchy-feely , propaganda that serves to minimize the accomplishments of our forebearers and the individual and consolidate the belief in the all-powerful State , all with the help of our compliant “watchdogs” in the media …

 

 

 

 

 The State and their media lackies are proceeding with a systematic curriculum of misinformation designed with the specific intention of making the “common folk” forget about their basic rights under the Constitution and allow power to be usurped and aggregated in the hands of the politicians and the bureaucrats , all in the name of the “public good” .

The Balance of Powers Act – People Are Destroyed For Lack Of Knowledge

 

 

” Our own Ignorance is destroying us. Mark Twain wrote in his autobiography:

“In religion and politics people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing.”

That is what has been going on in our Country for a very long time. Our “intellectuals” can’t think; our “scholars” parrot each other; the self-educated fixate on idiotic theories; no one studies original source writings; and The People jump on every bandwagon that rolls by.

In order to write intelligently on our Constitution, one needs to have studied and understood the original source writings of our Framers. No matter what your educational level, if you don’t know what is in our Declaration of Independence and federal Constitution; and if you are not familiar from personal study with The Federalist Papers, The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions of 1798, Madison’s Report on the Virginia Resolutions (1799-1800), and Madison’s Notes on Nullification (1834), among other original source writings, then you have no business writing about these issues. “
