With White-Knuckle Grip, February’s Cold Clings To New York

” As it limps away, February will not be missed. With the average temperature for the month lingering around 24 degrees, some 11 degrees shy of normal by the National Weather Service’s calculation, this insult of a month looks as though it will clock in as the coldest recorded February in New York City since 1934. That is 81 years of weather. That is all the way back to the Depression, when there were so many more dire things to worry about than whether 7-Eleven had salt or whose turn it was to walk the dog.

That year, February averaged 19.9 degrees and included the lowest daily reading ever registered for New York: On Feb. 9 the mercury sank to a ridiculous 15 degrees below zero. “

” Minnesotans woke up to subzero temperatures on Thanksgiving Day, and if the mercury doesn’t make it up into the double digits, the day could be one for the record books.

As of 8 a.m., it was 2 below in the Twin Cities, and 20 below in Bemidji, in northern Minnesota.

Meteorologist Matt Brickman is forecasting a high Thursday afternoon of 10 degrees. And if temperatures don’t rise higher than that, it will be the coldest Thanksgiving since Herbert Hoover was president, in 1930.”

141 Year Old Cold Weather Record Falls In Jacksonville

” Thursday morning not only broke an “ancient” record from 1873, but we also dropped to the second coldest temperature ever recorded in the month of November in Jacksonville.

According to the National Weather Service, for the second morning in a row, Jacksonville set a new cold weather record. Thursday mornings temperature dropped to a bone chilling 24 degrees breaking the old record of 30 degrees set in 1873.

Some areas around Woodbine, GA flirted with the upper teens as the temperature officially there dropped to 20 degrees.

Any thoughts that the winter of 2014-2015 wouldn’t be as bone-chilling as last year’s may have just been put on thin ice. And it’s only November.”

The rest of the nation is feeling the cold as well …

” Even the snow covering the ground is amazing. Roughly 50.4 percent of the lower 48 was covered with snowmore than double the amount normally seen for this time of year. At this exact same time last year, just a scant 12.1 percent of the country had snow on the ground. Check out the maps below from Tuesday’s snow cover versus exactly one year ago.

Jeff Masters is meteorology director at the online site Weather Underground. He says the low temperatures are January-like instead of what’s normal for November. He says it’s 15 degrees to 35 degrees below average over a big chunk of the country, thanks to arctic air.”
