A Primer On State and Local Tax Policy: Trade-Offs Among Tax Instruments

” The choice of tax instruments by a state or local government has wide-ranging implications for the economy, and the amount of revenue to be raised should not be the sole criterion used in developing tax policy. The trade-offs between various tax instruments, including revenue, fairness, and collection cost, should all be incorporated in these decisions.

In a new study for the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, Justin M. Ross defines five criteria for evaluating tax policy and uses them to give a clear overview of the different types of taxes utilized by state and local governments.

For the complete study, see “A Primer on State and Local Tax Policy: Trade-Offs among Tax Instruments.” “

Black Friday Violence Reported As Retailers Usher In Start Of Holiday Shopping Season

Tis The Season For Brawling

If this is the way “adults” act is it any surprise that their children behave like animals too ? This is what a secular society brings about . No faith , no morals …

” The early start to this year’s shopping mayhem did not prevent several reported violent confrontations at stores around the nation that opened up for Black Friday, which is typically considered the biggest shopping day of the year.”

You can treat yourself to more videos of shameful behavior here if you so desire . Undoubtably there will be more as the day rolls on . By opening their doors on Thanksgiving night the major retailers have just provided more time for the predatory shoppers to clash . It’s an embarrassing day to be an American . We hang our head in shame .

” In the Chicago suburb of Romeoville, a driver believed to be involved in a shoplifting scheme was shot by authorities after dragging a police officer who was trying to stop him in the parking lot of a Kohl’s department store late Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

At a Wal-Mart in the Southern California city of Rialto, a police officer was injured while trying to break up a fight after a store manager decided to open the doors early, which police said led to the melee, according to the San Bernardino County Sun.

In Las Vegas, a customer who had purchased a big-screen television at Target was shot in the leg while walking to a nearby apartment complex, KLAS-TV reported. The victim was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.”

Xbox One Vs. PS4: Microsoft Sells One Million Units In First 24 Hours, But Which System Will Prevail On Black Friday?

” Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) says it sold more than 1 million Xbox One gaming systems in the first 24 hours on Friday. The console hit shelves in 13 countries that day and was priced at $499 in the U.S.

The Redmond, Wash.-based company stated Sunday that the new console went on sale in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Ireland, Mexico, the UK, the U.S. and Australia. The corporation was forced to eliminate eight countries from its original sales list due to quality and production conflicts.

One week earlier, the Sony PS4 sold more than 1 million units on Nov. 15. The next-gen console launched at $399 in North America and is still currently sold out at places like GameStop and Wal-Mart.”

Anyone have any opinions to offer ? My son who has been an Xbox fan forever has opted to switch to PS4 . I don’t know the significance of this as all he can articulate to his uncool dad is that PS4 is better . Anyone have more to offer than ” it’s better” ?

Dick’s Sales, Stocks Drop Following Black Gun Ban

” Last Christmas many Dick’s customers were sent one mean lump of coal in the form of a gift certificate. All customers who pre-ordered a Troy Carbine from Dick’s for their Black Friday special had their orders cancelled and their money returned.

Following the Newtown shooting spree, Dick’s Sporting Goods changed their policy and stopped selling AR-pattern and other semi-automatic, magazine-fed rifles, even the guns they had already sold.

If there’s a silver lining for all the people who were eagerly waiting for that Troy Carbine and were vastly dissappointed, it’s that Dick’s isn’t doing so well in the financial department.

At a time where the only thing a company has to do to sell firearms, ammo and accessories is to unlock their doors, Dick’s sales have flat-lined. In fact, their sales dropped 2.2 percent  in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to 2011 and their shares 10 percent in the last quarter.

Dick’s denied that their sales were low because of the store’s gun policy, instead they pointed the finger at the ammunition shortage.”

As we noted previously Cabela’s is doing very well despite ammo shortages .

“But other sporting goods stores are not feeling the pinch despite the ammo drought. In fact, Cabela’s is doing better than ever and investors have been quick to point out that it’s because of their strong gun sales.

“Cabela’s Inc. stock closed up more than 16 percent, among leading gainers on the New York Stock Exchange, and hit a 52-week high Thursday after reporting strong financial results above the market’s and the company’s expectations.” “

Gun And Outdoor Gear Retailer Cabela’s 1Q Profit Jumps 73 Percent

” Cabela’s says strong sales of guns and ammunition helped drive its profit up 73 percent in the first quarter, surpassing expectations and briefly driving its shares to all-time highs on Thursday.

The retailer operates stores that sell gear for hunting, fishing and outdoor sports.

Revenue jumped 29 percent to $802.5 million from $623.5 million last year. Analysts expected revenue of $770.5 million.”

Magpul Changes Positions – Will No Longer Sell to Law Enforcement in Anti Gun States

” Bravo Magpul. The gun community spoke and you listened.

After a bit of a backlash when Magpul announced they would continue magazine sales to law enforcement in states where those same magazines were banned from civilians, Magpul has now changes their policy and pledges to explore a better way enforce their sales in the future.”

An excerpt from CEO letter announcing change in policy :

” With the fight in Colorado right now we do not have time to implement a new program, so I have suspended all LE sales to ban states until we can implement a system wherein any Law Enforcement Officer buying for duty use will have to promise to uphold their oath to the US Constitution – specifically the second and fourteenth amendments – as it applies to all citizens.”

You can say this , Obama and his cartel have been a boon to the firearms industry .

This article is a couple months old but I’m willing to bet that it’s news to most.

” Irony: Fear of anti-gun Obama causes Ruger to sell out of guns and suspend new orders .

Nothing makes a guy want to cling to his guns and God like having a communist living in the
White House. ”

” Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) , announced today that for the first quarter 2012, the Company has received orders for more than one million units. Therefore, the Company has
temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders. “

There is a fine article in Reason excerpted below , giving an overview of the renaissance in domestic firearm manufacturing . Well worth your time . The case is made for numerous factors contributing to the dramatic recovery of  America’s oldest manufacturing industry and I think they are all to one degree or another valid . Two in particular fire my imagination . The obvious one is the Obama presidency , which given the widespread belief that Dems= Gun Control explains the sharp increase in sales of the past few years . My personal favorite and one I’ve posted on in the past is the large influx of women to the shooting sports . Whether it’s a desire for self-protection , prior military service , finding common ground with a significant other or just a curiosity about the sport all I can say is “Welcome Ladies” we’re glad to have you .

“So far President Obama has not championed this industrial resurgence on his watch. But many in the firearms industry are happy to give him credit. Indeed, while Newt Gingrich has tried to brand Obama “the food stamps president,” it would be equally fitting to call him “the firearms president.” In 2004, when a 10-year federal ban against so-called assault weapons expired, the industry enjoyed only a mild uptick in production numbers. When Obama took office in January 2009 and almost immediately started floating the notion of resurrecting the ban, that mild uptick turned into an explosion, as consumers raced to purchase guns while they still could. One industry news service, Outdoor Wire, dubbed the president “Gun Salesman of the Year.” “

“March marked the 22nd straight month of increased background checks for gun sales and transfers over the previous year, and gun manufacturer stocks are soaring. Every state in the country
except Obama’s home state of Illinois now has concealed-carry laws on the books. “
