” It appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Dustin Sternbeck, a spokesman for the Arlington County Police Department, said in a telephone interview with Military.com.

The victim’s age and identity has not been released, the spokesman said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he was a military veteran, he said.

A weapon of unknown make and model was retrieved from the scene, Sternbeck said. Target Shooting In America

Millions Of Shooters , Billions Of Dollars

This report by the National Shooting Sports Foundation provides fascinating reading . The number of shooters as well as the money and time spent at the range boggles the mind and should give pause to those who think that gun enthusiasts are a group to be ignored and trampled upon .

Target Shooting 2

” Whether it’s religiously practiced at a range or shooting club each week or participated as an occasional weekend activity in the countryside with friends, millions of Americans go target shooting each year. In fact, more Americans target shoot each year than the number of people who live in the entire state of Florida or New York. Target shooters may be having fun afield with each shot at a clay pigeon or paper target, but with each outing, they are also part of an economic force at work. In fact, their activities generate $9.9 billion in spending each year through the purchase of shooting-specific products and services and create hundreds of thousands of jobs directly associated with the sale and manufacture of those goods and the provision of those services. As such, target shooting provides fun and enjoyment for millions of Americans, but ultimately benefits millions more through its positive economic impact.”

Just take a look at these numbers …

Target Shooters

” Target shooting comes in many forms. Participants shoot to test their skills and prepare for competition, hone their defensive abilities, test their marksmanship with new loads and optics or to simply have fun!Just like owning multiple tools to perform different jobs, many target shooters own more than one firearm, each with a particular use or purpose. With 65 percent of all target shooters, rifles are the most often used firearm. Handguns follow closely behind. Shotguns are used by 48 percent of all participants with muzzleloaders used by 18 percent of the shooting public. Although more target shooters use rifles, handgun users actually spend more days shooting, in part due to greater availability of indoor ranges in urban areas where more people live. Participation in target shooting by state roughly parallels each state’s population. Even in largely urban areas, people are keen to try their hand with firearms. Despite restrictions that can make target shooting activities difficult to enjoy, target shooting remains extremely popular and continues to grow everywhere.”

Target shooting generates incredible amounts of revenue for businesses both firearm related and others as well as creating hundreds of thousands of jobs .

From OffTheGridNews

” The benefits of good fences, good dogs and good cats can’t be overstated in defending the homestead, but there are times when a firearm is the appropriate response. However, the choice of weapons for a given situation should be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis, and in the current societal dynamic your black gun is probably not going to be the best choice most of the time.

The bulk of the threats you will face are threats to your food production from wildlife. These threats run the gamut from small rodent pests, such as rats and mice, to large predators, like coyote and mountain lions, to deer in the orchard. Throw in the occasional bear, the increasing population of wolves in the lower 48, an assortment of winged marauders assaulting your crops and poultry, and the homestead becomes a war zone in a big hurry. With the wide variety of threats, however, defense is not a one gun-fits-all proposition.

That having been said, there is one gun that fills a large number of these needs, and provides the versatility to re-task should the threat suddenly change. The weapon of which I speak is the venerable 12 gauge shotgun. I love the 12 gauge above all other weapons. Granted, this is a personal preference and opinions will vary, but I stand by my assertion that the shogun is by far the most versatile weapon there is in the defense of home and homestead. I have often said that if I could have only one gun in a survival situation it would be a shotgun, and this holds true for “normal” times as well.

Why a shotgun? “

California Homeowner Foils Home Invasion Attempt By Firing Shotgun, Police Say

” A California homeowner foiled an attempted home invasion Thursday when she grabbed her shotgun and fired near the suspects.

She said she saw one man in her backyard and another waiting by the car. Carla’s 90-year-old mother was also inside the home at the time, MyFoxLA.com reported.

Dressed in her nightgown, Carla grabbed her shotgun and fired at the ground near one of the suspects.

“Hopefully this is going to tell these guys you know, I’m not a sitting duck,” she told MyFoxLA.com. “I’ve got a gun and I know how to use it,” she said.

“You have to at some point in time, take responsibility yourself for your own safety and that’s all I was doing,” she said.”

Two very entertaining and informative Youtube firearms channels have united to create an interesting video experiment that combines the divergent specialties of both channels . Demolition Ranch is a channel that specializes in mostly 12 gauge shotgun videos while , as the name implies , 22Plinkster caters to the rimfire crowd .

They pooled their talents and handloaded some .22 caliber tracer bullets into twelve gauge shotgun shells and had a blast .Very cool video . It would be even cooler to see them shoot this homemade round at night . It would also be cool to see a target shot by these inventive rounds . Perhaps the boys will treat us to that in the near future .

Bullpup Unlimited Remington 870 Kit

” The bullpup concept has recently found its way to the shotgun platform as well. There are several offerings on the market now including the Kel-Tec KSG, the Utas UTS-15 and the SRM Arms line of shotguns. While all of those guns bring new and interesting concepts to the field, it seems they all lack one thing that many shotguns over the years have boasted; indestructible reliability.

Platforms such as the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500 have been around a very long time, and for good reason. They are practically indestructible when it comes to reliability. As appealing as those other new bullpup shotguns are in concept, I have not heard of a single one of them favorably compared to an 870 when talking about reliability.  Also, they are far from inexpensive. The least expensive of that group, in terms of list price, is the KSG, which now lists for $990 (although finding one available for under $2000 can prove challenging). Compare that to the price of a base Remington 870 (I just bought a brand new 870 Express 7-round for $365) and you have a TON money left over to dump into upgrades.  That said, you still have to deal with a full length shotgun, or do you?”

” Enter the Bullpup Unlimited, Inc. bullpup conversion kit for the Remington 870 pump shotgun. The kit is available directly from Bullpup Unlimited and is also sold by several other dealers. The kit sells for $359 and it includes everything you need, except the actual Remington 870. Per the instructions, it will work with all right hand ejection 870’s so long as they do not have a vent-rib barrel. While conceivably, you could install a shorter or longer barreled gun into the kit, it is designed around an 18” barrel, and my 18.5″ barrel protrudes only about 5/8” beyond the end of the chassis.”

Repeatedly Victimized Homeowner Finally Gets Sweet Revenge On Burglar, Shotgun In Hand

” Gilbert Nunez had already burglarized Paul Cavazo’s condo twice before, and was getting ready to make the third time a charm when this time his luck ran out. Cavazo pulled his trusty sidekick, a .12 gauge shotgun out and pointed the business end at Nunez telling him to drop the TV and kiss the grass. Security camera footage shows a very compliant Nunez laying down after looking down that cold, black barrel. ’I grabbed my shotgun. You know, I’ve been thinking about this for a long time,’ Cavazo said.”

Kel-Tec KSG meets the Remington 870

” The rare and relatively costly Kel-Tec KSG is compared on the range against the classic, common, and relatively cheap Remington 870. These two 12 gauge pump-action shotguns each have their strengths, but there are also some quirks present. The KSG can’t easily get on target without added sights, and the slide needs to be operated very purposefully to cycle. The design of the 870, while simple and ready to go off the shelf, has half the capacity of the KSG.

‘Drone Season’ Opens In Colorado, 1000 Permits Issued

drone hunting permit

” “Hunters in Colorado are lining up for a hot new license: $25 to shoot down a government drone over the village of Deer Trail.

Would-be drone hunters are limited in what they may use to take down unwanted drones, and must equip themselves only with 12-gauge or smaller shotguns, loaded only with ammunition that’s safe to fire into the sky, namely lead and steel shot and no shotguns with rifled barrels. Tracers are completely disallowed.

Drone-hunters are limited to thee shots per drone every two hours, ensuring that if no bounty is collected with three rounds that things don’t amount to people shooting into the air for no reason.”

” This is probably the longest video I have ever made but trust me its a good one.

Ever wonder what the differences are between a Remington 870 and a Mossberg 500/590? Ever wonder which one you should buy? Which one is better?

Both shotguns have their pros & cons. In my opinion one is not necessarily better than the other. What it really boils down to is which shotgun has the “features” you want/need.

The best way to decide which shotgun is best for you is to know the features that separate them. Do not buy a gun based on some guy simply saying “brand X” is the best and has no facts to back it up.

I did not talk about pistol grip shotguns in this video because I wanted to keep it basic and below 30 minutes long. I will talk about the pros & cons of pistol grip shotguns in a separate video.

Mossberg Model 500 Thunder Ranch 12 Gauge Pump-Action Fighting Shotgun

” The Mossberg Model 500 shotgun has been around for over half a century, being introduced in 1961. It is one of the most popular shotguns ever built, with Mossberg just recently producing the ten millionth Model 500 shotgun. The Model 500 design is the basis for the entire line of Mossberg pump shotguns, including the military Model 590A1, which serves the US military and law enforcement market, with variations of the Models 590 and 590A1 available for the civilian market as well. Still, the basic Model 500 has endured for five decades because it is a very affordable shotgun, and it works very well.

The Model 500 is available in dozens of configurations that fill quite well the role of a fighting shotgun, and the one shown here is their Thunder Ranch variation. Thunder Ranch is a world-renowned firearms training facility in Oregon, founded and directed by Clint Smith. Mr. Smith is well-known as a firearms instructor and writer, and has successfully run Thunder Ranch for twenty years, training shooters in the defensive and offensive use of firearms. The Model 500 Thunder Ranch shotgun shown here was designed in cooperation with Mr. Smith, and has pretty much everything needed to serve as a fighting shotgun.”

Grandson Shoots Repeat Burglar Who Stole From His 98 Year Old Blind & Deaf Grandmother With Shotgun

” There is nothing that gets my blood boiling more than someone who takes advantage of the elderly or disabled.

A Michigan man, who cares for his 98 year old grandmother, who has trouble seeing and hearing, became alarmed when the real time monitoring system he used to keep an eye on his grandmother became disconnected so he went to her home to investigate.

When he arrived, he found that thieves had forced their way into the home and stolen the laptop that he used to monitor his grandmother’s condition along with an ATV from the garage. He reported the crime to police, and fearing for this grandmother’s well being decided to spend the night. He also brought a shotgun along should the thieves return.

Return they did.”

Eagle Scout Expelled Due to Forgotten Shotgun WILL Get to Graduate High School AND Gets Full Scholarship

” Now Withrow has found out he will be able to graduate on time. Although he will have to attend an alternate school for his remaining two weeks and he will not be able to attend graduation ceremonies with his friends.

Withrow thought he may not be able to attend college just a couple days ago, but now he finds himself with a full ride to Liberty University.

Liberty University issued the following statement:

Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr., while traveling in North Carolina, learned of Cole Withrow’s story from a local evening news broadcast. The 18-year-old was wearing a “Liberty Football” T-shirt. Falwell followed up with him, discovering his sister was a graduate.

Eagle Scout Facing Expulsion Over Gun Charge

Cole Withrow with his sister.

” Eagle Scout Cole Withrow was just a few weeks from graduating with honors from his North Carolina high school, but now the active church member is facing a felony weapons charge and a precarious future after accidentally leaving a shotgun in his pickup truck in the school parking lot.

Most members of the Johnston County community, just southeast of Raleigh believe the 18-year-old is paying far too big a price for an honest mistake. Withrow had been skeet shooting with friends a day before, and only noticed he had left his shotgun in his truck on Monday morning as he reached to grab his book bag, said family friend Kimberly Boykin. When he realized his mistake, rather than leave school grounds, he went to the front office to call his mother for help.”

Nephew Of Small-Town Ill. Mayor Suspected Of Killing 2 Boys, 3 Adults Before Police Shootout

” The nephew of a small-town Illinois mayor shot and killed five people, including two boys, before leading police on a chase that ended in an exchange of gunfire that left him dead, authorities said Wednesday.

Illinois State Police said they believe Rick O. Smith, 43, entered a Manchester home through the back door and shot the victims at close range with a shotgun, leaving two women, one man and the boys dead. Two people were found in a bedroom, two in a second bedroom and the man in the hallway. A sixth victim, a 6-year-old girl, was injured and taken to a Springfield hospital.

“The offender took the 6-year-old out of the residence and put her in the hands of a neighbor,” State Police Lt. Col. Todd Kilby said.

Officials have not revealed a motive for the killings. Police said the victims are related. Authorities believe Smith and the victims were acquainted, but they didn’t provide details of the relationships.”
