Busting 5 Myths About the Minimum Wage

” When someone says “minimum wage,” what comes to mind?

Do you think of teenagers flipping burgers? Or a single parent trying to feed several kids?

While President Obama and other proponents of a higher minimum wage want you to visualize that single parent, the truth is that a burger-flipping teenager or college student with a part-time job paints a much more accurate picture of the minimum wage in America.

In his State of the Union address, President Obama called for an increase in the minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 an hour. Today, Democrats in Congress are arguing that the President didn’t go far enough, proposing an increase to more than $10 an hour.”

FACT CHECK: STATE OF THE UNION 2013

” President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address included few new or unexpected proposals, but many factually incorrect or misleading assertions. Here are the lowlights.

“Corporate profits have rocketed to all-time highs – but for more than a decade, wages and incomes have barely budged.” Wages and incomes may not always be the best measurement, because they leave out benefits, which have increased overall compensation over several decades. Regardless, Obama chose his timeframe carefully, because over the past four years, middle class income has actually declined.

“In 2011, Congress passed a law saying that if both parties couldn’t agree on a plan to reach our deficit goal, about a trillion dollars’ worth of budget cuts would automatically go into effect this year.” Obama is referring to the sequester. He omits the fact that he (or his White House) proposed the sequester, and he personally signed it, with the hope of using it to push Republicans into passing higher tax rates on high earners.

Obama: 57 Vacation Days Since Vowing He ‘Will Not Rest Until Anyone’ Can Find A GOOD Job

” It’s time for the State of the Union address, which means the president is pivoting back to jobs once more. It’s an annual game where President Obama pretends to be focused on employment and many in the media pretend to believe him.

Back in 2009, the president promised never to “rest” until the job situation was fixed. Nearly four years later, he’s done a lot of resting.

According to The Weekly Standard, Pres. Obama has had 83 vacation days overall and Factcheck.org says he took 26 of those in 2009. That means the president has taken at least 57 vacation days since his vow not to “rest.” “

5 Big Problems Obama Will Ignore In His State Of The Union Address

” He has already told House Democrats that the focus of the speech will be on jobs and the economy, but according to USA Today, he is also expected to discuss gun control, climate change, and immigration.

In other words, the State of the Union address will probably sound a lot like every other speech the president has given. If your State of the Union drinking game doesn’t include the phrase “commonsense solutions,” you’re probably some sort of teetotaler.

If you’re among the 88 percent of Americans who won’t bother to tune in (according to Nielsen ratings of last year’s audience), don’t worry: It’s not like the president will actually discuss the real state of the country. Rather it’s yet another chance for Obama to promote his own policies and ignore their many flaws. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), on behalf of the GOP, and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), on behalf of the Tea Party, will provide responses that will hopefully point out the president’s attempts to dodge reality. But if not, we’ve got a handy list of issues the president is likely to avoid in the State of the Union address.”

Can you guess what topics will be left untouched ? Make your list and then go here to see how you fare against Reason’s estimates of what’s missing . We don’t think it’s too difficult to get a grip on what Lord Obama will ignore … just think what’s truly important … yet politically inconvenient .

RAND PAUL TO GIVE TEA PARTY RESPONSE TO SOTU

” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) will give the Tea Party response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday.

Paul will deliver his remarks at the National Press Club after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) delivers the Republican response, which he will give in both English and Spanish in an attempt to broaden the GOP’s appeal to minorities.”
