The 10 Biggest Political Gaffes Of 2013

” 2013 has been a big year in U.S. politics. President Obama, who was inaugurated in January for his second term, finally implemented his signature health care legislation. Later in the year, the federal government shut down due to a funding war largely over that same reform. But it’s also been a huge year for politicians doing and saying some truly embarrassing things. Even without the constant media attention from a presidential campaign like last year’s, politicians still managed to embarass themselves in some ridiculous ways.

Here is one example from IBD’s selection .

” Biden Calls the Wrong Man Twice

Vice President Joe Biden is no stranger to gaffes, so this may be less of a “big f*cking deal” than other moments, but it’s embarrassing all the same. When Biden saw that Democratic candidate Marty Walsh had been elected mayor of Boston in November, the vice president excitedly called him up. “You son of a gun, Marty!” Biden reportedly said. “You did it!” Except he was talking to the wrong Marty Walsh. As it turns out, Biden called up another Marty Walsh who formerly worked for Ted Kennedy and now heads a government relations firm. After receiving the right number from the wrong Marty, Biden reportedly misdialed his phone and left a congratulatory voicemail to a woman named Toni. “

GOP Division Widens As Another Senator Girds For Battle With Tea Party Challenger

” A last-minute tea party primary challenge to Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn of Texas not only sent political shockwaves through the Lone Star State but signaled that the ongoing divide in the Republican Party would continue.

Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Texas, is aligned with the party’s hard-right faction, and his 2014 election challenge automatically puts pressure on Cornyn, who has tacked rightward for the last year since tea party favorite Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, won in 2012 as a political novice.

At the same time, another Senate Republican leader up for re-election, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, is also facing a tea party opponent, putting the Senate’s top GOP leaders in the position of dealing with intra-party challenges next year as they guide the caucus.”

We’re having a hard time deciding where we stand with this race . While Senator Cornyn has been portrayed as a “liberal” republican in the media for quite some time now and there are some votes , Patriot Act , etc. , that concern us , his overall voting record and ratings from some influential conservative organizations gives an impression of a fairly solid non-statist legacy . Is this a seat that the Tea Party , which we support whole-heartedly , should be spending large sums of time and money trying to overthrow ?

While we have no doubts as to the qualifications and integrity of Rep Stockman and support him in his efforts to reduce government we aren’t sure that now is the time to stir this pot . Thoughts anyone ?

Republican Congressman: I’ll Kill Any Gun Control Bill That Passes The Senate With A “Blue Slip.”

“The Democrat gun ban is dead on arrival. I will introduce in the House a blue slip resolution that will automatically kill the Senate gun ban,” said Stockman. “Not only are Democrats on the wrong side of public opinion, they are on the wrong side of the Constitution. You can’t strip Americans of their gun rights, and you certainly can’t do it by having the Senate create a national tax on firearms. They are in violation of constitutional limits on federal power.”

What Stockman is referring to there is the Constitution’s requirement that “All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives.”

IS OBAMA USING ANTI-GUN SPAMBOTS?

” Texas Congressman Steve Stockman has blown the whistle on President Obama’s anti-gun Twitter campaign. Stockman says that hardly any of Obama’s anti-gun tweets come from actual human beings, while most are computer-generated spam:

“Obama’s anti-gun campaign is a fraud,” Stockman said. …

Stockman said that in response to Obama’s call for people to tweet their congressman in support of gun control legislation, he received just 16 tweets. But he said all of these messages were identical, and that a closer look at them revealed that only six were from real people.”

Stacy McCain is also on top of this …

” “The other 10 are fake, computer-generated spambots,” his office said in a press release. As evidence, he said these 10 tweets use default graphics and names, and have not engaged in any interaction with other people. Two of the tweets were sent at nearly the same time, and both follow just one person: Brad Schenck, Obama’s former digital strategist.

A huge hat-tip to @DefendWallSt, who spotted the fake Twitter accounts on the #DemandAVote hashtag Saturday. Friends pointed it out to me, soI blogged about it, and apparently someone in Congressman Stockman’s office was actually paying attention.

National Review reports that Republican Reps. Michael Grimm and Adam Kinzinger have also been “flooded” with messages from the Obama anti-gun spambot campaign.”

As is The Heritage Foundation

Spambot Twit

” In a statement, Stockman called Obama’s anti-gun campaign a “fraud” and demanded the White House explain itself.

“To what extent is the White House involved in this attempt to defraud Congress?” he said.

Stockman was one of 16 Members of Congress who received the tweets, according to Fox News.

Creating a false narrative to boost support for a policy position doesn’t contribute to a fair and balanced debate – it only harms the conversation about a serious issue like gun control.

The hashtag campaign was started by Obama’s new grassroots organizing platform, Organizing for Action – a product of Obama for America, his electoral campaign. The organization only launched in January 2013, but if this kind of dishonest “action” is how they plan to organize support for the President’s policies, they won’t get far with conservative watchdogs eyeballing their every move.”
