Thai Army Stages Coup After Six-Month Political Stalemate

Thailand’s army chief took control of the country after a six-month crisis that has sapped economic growth and caused political paralysis, staging the military’s 12th coup since 1932.

Two days after declaring martial law and saying there was no coup, Army Chief Prayuth Chan-Ocha announced on national television alongside senior military officials that he was seizing control in order to restore peace. He announced a daily nationwide curfew from 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m.”

“ To restore peace back to the country in a short time and to reform the country’s politics, economy and society, the Thai military, army, navy, air force and police have seized power from May 22 onward,” Prayuth said. “All people should remain calm and live their lives as normal. All government officials continue to work in line with their regulations and what they have done before.”

The coup could provide short-term certainty to markets after months of street protests and upheaval that led to the removal on May 7 of then-caretaker premier Yingluck Shinawatra by the Constitutional Court. The military’s intervention may not resolve the deep polarization that has taken hold in Thailand over the past decade between the largely rural-based base of Yingluck’s brother Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted in a 2006 coup, and his royalist opponents.”

 The New Frontline Fashion Statement

” The high demand for protection has spurred one vendor to produce cheap and lightweight bulletproof vests using X-ray film. The vests have become an essential safety measure for protest guards on Ratchadamnoen and around Government House.

Tests involving shots over a distance of five metres had shown an M-16 bullet penetrated 35 layers of X-ray film, a .357 bullet 28 layers, an 11mm bullet 18 layers, a .38 bullet 12 layers and a .22 bullet nine layers. The vendor uses 40 layers of X-ray film on the front and rear of each bulletproof vest. Each vest weighs less than 2kg. The vendor once made the vests from unbleached cloth, but he now orders them ready-made with the supporting steel plates removed. ”

” The video above is visual proof to the importance of the Second Amendment and the right to protect yourself with a firearm.

‘RED DAWN’ DOLES OUT TEA PARTY PATRIOTISM

” My girlfriend’s mother is hosting two foreign exchange students this year. One is from China and the other is from Thailand. For the sake of anonymity, we will refer to them as E and F. As I was searching for a film to kick off Thanksgiving weekend, I kept running into the mainstream reviews of the “Red Dawn” remake. To mention them specifically would be a disservice to my intelligence and yours. Anyway, I decided in protest of this lame and lazy smearing of the new “patriotic” film that I would go see it. But, I took E and F on the offhanded chance the film would capture the same American patriotism that the original practically defined for a generation of Americans.

I wasn’t expecting much as the three of us took our seats in the packed theater. And they were simply following my lead expecting just another movie. I’m a big fan of John Milius‘s original film, and what I was expecting was a politically correct remake without an iota of intelligence in its head. But when the lights went down the three of us were subjected to a two-hour film filled with great action, unabashed patriotism and love for freedom. “
