Government Waste Includes Swedish Massages For Rabbits, Monkey Gambling Lessons

” More than a dozen lucky rabbits were given Swedish massages four times a day, courtesy of U.S. taxpayers, as part of a study to figure out whether massage can help recovery times after strenuous exercise — a practice Sen. Tom Coburn says makes a mockery of federal spending.

The rabbit massages are one of the hundred wasteful products Mr. Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, identified in his latest edition of the Wastebook, an annual compendium of the ridiculous and outrageous items in government spending, which he is releasing on Wednesday.”

If you think Swedish massage for rabbits is absurd get a load of these expenditures …

” Other highlights included the National Science Foundation paying academics to teach monkeys to gamble, government sponsorship of a children’s play about brain-eating zombies and a first-person combat shooting video game the Army developed — but which intelligence officials fear terrorists could use to train their own recruits. Indeed, Hezbollah has adapted the game’s design to train suicide martyrs.

Mr. Coburn’s investigators also found scientists putting mountain lions, monkeys, rats and cows on treadmills. That’s reminiscent of a previous famous item Mr. Coburn spotted that involved sticking shrimp on a treadmill to try to see if tired shrimp were less healthy. “

Disability Fraud Cost Taxpayers $2.5 Billion

SSI Fraud

” A Social Security Disability Office on the border of Kentucky and Huntington, W. Virginia, is at the center of federal investigations into the activities of SSD supervisors who turned over huge numbers of cases in order to boost their own bonuses. They set up shop with one attorney, an administrative law judge and several obliging doctors for several years.

“I’m flabbergasted,” said Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), himself a physician, as he grilled witnesses for hours about the massive loss of taxpayer dollars.  “You abrogated your job as chief judge,” Senator Coburn told Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Charlie Andrus.  The alleged misdeeds of Judge David B. Daugherty were heard without his direct testimony because he fled the hearing room before proceedings began. And the attorney in question, Eric Conn, took the fifth on the advice of his own attorney.

Most pitiful to watch was the testimony of four female witnesses who told the Governmental Affairs Committee about numerous incidences of retaliation by SSD managers, supervisors, and even Judge Andrus himself who admitted playing a role in video taping Senior Clerk Sarah Carver, one of the principles in the whistleblower lawsuit.  Still employed, Carver, along with master docket clerk Jennifer Griffith, blew wide open the skulduggery that transferred about 2.5 billion taxpayer dollars into the benefit entitlements of disability claimants who were merely numbers on “DB’s Monthly Lists.”

Background-Check Deal Said Getting Close

” A bipartisan deal to expand gun-purchase background checks looks promising, U.S. Senate aides said, as the White House began a strong gun-control push Monday.

The improving bipartisan prospects stem from a measure being developed by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., the aides told The Washington Post.

The measure calls for background checks for all gun purchases except for those between close family members and some hunters, the aides said, adding the caveat addressed concerns of some conservatives.

He has been negotiating with Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., over the deal’s details, but talks were stalled amid Coburn’s opposition to requiring gun owners to keep records of private gun sales — a point Schumer insisted on.”

News Reports: Democrats, Republicans and NRA Work Together on Gun Confiscation Deal

” The NRA is vigorously denying an NBCNews.com report saying that the NRA is cutting a backroom deal with Congress (including Congressional Republicans) that would allow for universal background checks and the creation of a vast federal database identifying all (legal) gun owners. In exchange for this alleged deal, Democrats will back off from accusing the NRA and Republicans from refusing to act following the Sandy Hook Tragedy.

According to NBCNews.com:

Senators negotiating a bill mandating background checks for all gun buyers are privately expecting the National Rifle Association not to fight the measure — provided the legislation does not require private gun sellers to maintain records of the checks, NBC News has learned.

If that requirement is met and key Republican negotiator Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma signs on, the powerful gun lobby has signaled to lawmakers that they would not actively oppose the bill — and not count votes in favor of it as part of its highly influential NRA lawmaker ratings — according to Senate aides familiar with the stalled negotiations.”

We have an absolutely worthless republican leadership in the Senate … Throw the bums out … Cowards , Bastards , Traitors … Rot in Hell

Even if the NRA is not involved in any deal-making, it appears that Congressional Republicans are trying to cut a deal that they hope will stop Democrats and the media from claiming that Republicans refuse to do anything to help prevent another Sandy Hook. Ammoland reported that:

Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor is leading the charge to give Obama and Holder what they want in exchange for appearing to be ‘fixing’ the problem of innocent children being butchered in our public and private schools.

If Ammoland is correct that Republicans are making a deal on gun control, it appears that the rot goes all the way to the top. Again, from Ammoland:

Newly appointed Republican Judiciary Chairman, Bob Goodlatte R-VA 6th District, is providing political cover for the sneaky back room gun control deals and gun grabbing sell outs that his political masters – – John Boehner and Eric Cantor – are cutting [deals] with Obama and his corrupt Attorney General, Eric Holder.”

Gun Subject-Control Drive To Get First Votes In Congress

” Wider background checks had been seen as having a good chance in Congress, but the effort has stumbled in recent days over a dispute about whether to keep records of private gun sales.Republicans fear such records would be a first step to a government register of gun owners.

Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma appeared more optimistic on Thursday about the possibility of reaching an agreement with Democrats on background checks.

“I think we’ll ultimately get there even though the outside groups aren’t comfortable with it yet,” Coburn said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

The drive for gun-control laws has taken on a new urgency since the December shooting in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at a school in Newtown, Connecticut.

It has become one of Obama’s top domestic priorities, along with immigration reform and fixing a series of budget messes.

But reviving an assault-weapons ban that expired in 2004 has almost no chance in Congress, with opposition from Republicans and some Democrats.

The two parties are closer to agreement on the two lesser elements of the gun-control drive: cracking down on the illegal trafficking of firearms and bolstering school security.”

What the hell happened to Tom Coburn ? He used to be a man of principle and believer in liberty . They’ve all over-stayed their welcome in DC . Now he’s turned into some sort of Olympia Snow ? Oklahoma … call your Senator … he needs a reminder of what he is supposed to stand for .

Update: Maybe Coburn is growing a pair . Keep burning up those phone lines folks .

” Democrats had hoped to reach a bipartisan deal on expanding federal background checks with conservative Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. But on Wednesday, Democrats set aside their efforts to win over Coburn after weeks of talks failed to resolve a dispute over requiring that records of private sales be retained.

Their inability to craft a deal with Coburn was a blow to Democrats because of his solid conservative credentials and “A” rating with the NRA. His support could have meant backing from other Senate Republicans and even moderate Democrats, including several facing 2014 re-election campaigns in GOP-leaning states.”

Department of Homeland Pork

“A grant program administered by the Department of Homeland Security has morphed from a fund designed to fight terror into a pork-barrel program that pads local governments’ budgets, according to a report to be released Wednesday by Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.).

The report, titled “Safety at Any Price: Assessing the Impact of Homeland Security Spending in U.S. Cities,” focuses on Homeland Security’s Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI).

“Since 2003, DHS has spent $35 billion on grant programs that were intended to make Americans safer from terrorist attacks,” a spokesman for Sen. Coburn wrote in an email. “But DHS failed to establish goals or metrics to ensure that funds were used to make Americans safe and cannot say how much safer we are today after spending $35 billion.” “

Too Damn Much !

How Much Does the U.N. Cost Us?

“Most everyone knows the United States is the largest contributor to the United Nations and its affiliated funds, programs, and specialized agencies. But nailing down precisely how much we pay into the U.N. system every year is no easy task.”
