” Don Pardo, the TV and radio announcer whose exuberant baritone heralded the opening ofSaturday Night Live for all but one of its 38 seasons, has died, NBC confirmed to Mashableon Monday night. He was 96.

Pardo has been an NBC announcer since 1944, and semi-retired in 2004 while maintaining his SNL duties from his Arizona home. During his 60 years with the network, Pardo did TV, radio and just about anything else that required his unique voice talent, including wartime reporting during World War II.

His break in mainstream TV came in 1956, when Pardo was the first voice of The Price is Right, where he remained until the show went to ABC in 1963. From there he went to Jeopardy! and other NBC game shows including Winning Streak and Jackpot!

Police Officer Buys Bed, TV, Wii For Teen

Lord knows we spend enough gigabytes pillorying corruption in the law enforcement community and so it is always a welcome change when we get to call our reader’s attention to some goodness that is occasionally displayed by individual officers . This is one of those times . Meet Officer Gaetano Acerra .

Good Cop

” A Sumter police officer went above and beyond for a 13-year-old boy.

A few weeks ago, 13-year-old Cameron Simmons called Sumter police because he was upset after fighting with his mom. The teenager told police he didn’t want to live in the house with his family anymore.

Officer Gaetano Acerra responded to the call.

” I said, ‘You have it good, you have a roof over your head,'” said Acerra. “I told him I would try to help him out, and here we are now.”

The officer brought Simmons home, and realized the boy didn’t have a real bed. In fact, Simmons didn’t have nearly anything he needed for a bedroom.

” My heart went out for him,” said Acerra. “I thought the little things that he needed I could give him, to make him a happier kid.”

A few weeks after the call, Acerra showed up at Simmon’s house with a truck full of gifts.

” Bed, TV, desk, chair, a Wii game system that somebody donated to me because of the story I told them,” said Acerra.”

… This Is How He Responded

Photo: Turns out Glenn Beck loves the Work Smart and Hard poster. He invited me to Dallas to talk about it. In fact, our conversation is airing now on TheBlaze. I think the guy just helped me raise a boat load of money for the Foundation by plugging the posters. He also wrote a check that left me speechless. Almost. Check out the show to see for yourself.Mike http://profoundlydisconnected.com/

” Shannon K. Walsh wrote, “Mike – How could you associate with such a horrible and psychotic person that is Glen[n] Beck? I wouldn’t accept a dime off that hateful, nasty racist. Very disappointed to see this post.”

Well, hi there, Shannon – and a pleasant good morning to you too!

As for your personal characterization of Glenn Beck, I can only assume you have information not available to me. In my time with him, I saw nothing “horrible, psychotic, hateful, or nasty.” I smelled no burning sulphur, no smoldering brimstone, and saw no sign of cloven hooves.

To be clear, I’m not here to tell you what to think or whom to hate. Like everyone else, you’re free to pick your devils, choose your angels, and attach the horns and halos accordingly.

But the guts of your question – even without all the name-calling and acrimony – reveal the essence of what’s broken in our country. You want to know “how I can associate” with someone you don’t like? The short answer is, how can I not? How are we ever going to accomplish anything in this incredibly divisive time if we associate only with people that we don’t disagree with? “

” Finally, at age 11, Lucille reunited with her mother when Desiree and Ed returned to Jamestown. Even then, Ball had an itching to do something big and when she was 15, she convinced her mother allow her to enroll in a New York City drama school. But despite her longing to make it on the stage, Ball was too nervous to draw much notice.

“I was a tongue-tied teenager spellbound by the school’s star pupil, Bette Davis,” said Ball. The school finally wrote her mother. “Lucy’s wasting her time and ours. She’s to shy and reticent to put her best foot forward.”

She remained in New York City, however, and by 1927 Ball, who had started calling herself Montana and later Diane Belmont found work as a model, first for fashion designer Hattie Carnegie, and then, after overcoming a debilitating bout of rheumatoid arthritis, Chesterfield cigarettes. “

” Remembered as a dizzy sitcom redhead with show business aspirations, Lucille Ball was, in fact, a show business powerhouse and television pioneer. Throughout her teen years, Ball tried unsuccessfully to launch her show business career, finally landing a spot as a “Ziegfeld Girl”. She launched her Hollywood career as one of the “Goldwyn Girls”, but she moved out from the crowd of starlets to starring roles. With “I Love Lucy”, she and husband Desi Arnaz pioneered the 3-camera technique now the standard in filming TV sitcoms, and the concept of syndicating television programs. She was also the first woman to own her own film studio as the head of Desilu Productions . “

“The Hope and the Change”

“Citizens United Obama film to air on TV”

“Citizens United has struck a deal with a dozen television stations to run its hour-long film featuring voters disaffected with President Barack Obama, sending the Republican critique of the incumbent into tens of millions of homes in the lead-up to Election Day, the group’s officials told POLITICO.

The Hope and the Change” directed by Stephen Bannon, who made the Sarah Palin movie “The Undefeated,” was first unveiled last month and it aired during the Republican National Convention in Tampa.”

RIP Commander McHale

What a powerhouse lineup of talent for Al Gore’s prime time schedule . Certain to be Don’t Miss TV . Eeeew

“The new line-up will be Behar, Cenk Uygur, Eliot Spitzer, and Jennifer Granholm, which is dreadful as a four-hour block of political television but might not be half bad as the nucleus of an awful-yet-compulsively-watchable left-wing variety show. Joy in the Joan Rivers host role, Cenk as affable Andy Richter-esque sidekick, Granholm as the straight (wo)man, and Client Number Nine as some sort of Dean Martin figure wandering the set with drink in hand and firing off double entendres to the audience’s delight. Magical.”
