More Startling Information Revealed About The VA Scandal…This Is Worse Than We Thought

” According to Acting Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Sloan Gibson, the number of veterans who potentially died as a result of long delays at VA facilities in Phoenix is more than twice as many as reported last month.

Of the approximately 1,700 veterans VA Inspector General Richard Griffin reported were in danger of being “lost or forgotten” within the department’s bureaucracy and systematic delays, 17 were said to have died as a result. Gibson recently appeared in Phoenix – the epicenter of the VA scandal – for the first time in his current capacity, where he announced another 18 veterans died after their names were scrubbed from waiting list records.”

Anger Explodes Over Treatment Of Bergdahl’s Release As Veterans, Troops Call Him A Deserter

” For all the yellow ribbons strewn across his hometown in Idaho and the gratitude expressed by his parents in an emotional visit to the White House on Saturday, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will receive a hero’s welcome when he returns to the United States after nearly five years in Taliban captivity.

From military forums across the country, a groundswell of anger is rising over the Obama administration’s silence on perhaps the most controversial question surrounding the deal that freed Bergdahl in exchange for five senior Taliban members: Was he a deserter?

So far, the U.S. government has shied away from the long-nagging question, which raged anew Monday with growing clamor on the Internet about the circumstances of Bergdahl’s disappearance from his unit’s small forward position in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009.

Military-related blogs, Twitter accounts and Facebook pages were filled with screeds from commenters accusing Bergdahl of being a “traitor” or a Taliban “collaborator.” The online publication The Daily Beast published a nearly 2,000-word first-person account by a former Army infantry officer who said he was privy to details of Bergdahl’s disappearance and who stated flatly that “he was a deserter, and soldiers from his own unit died trying to track him down.”

The mother of one of six soldiers who’ve been identified as being killed in circumstances related to the search for Bergdahl was furious over the opaque handling of the case, telling Army Times that the Pentagon “really owes the parents of these fallen soldiers the truth.”

But instead of addressing the desertion issue head-on, complained many military analysts and war veterans, the Obama administration is allowing the debate to fester, only deepening the skepticism of current and former service members who demand to know how Bergdahl left his unit, how many U.S. forces were killed in the search effort, and whether there are plans to conduct a legal review of his case and, if necessary, prosecute him.

Michael Waltz, who as an Army major commanded U.S. Special Forces in eastern Afghanistan at the time Bergdahl disappeared, said the sergeant deserted and shouldn’t have been accorded POW status.

“ He just walked off after guard duty and wandered into the nearby village,” Waltz told McClatchy in an interview Monday. “This guy needs to be held accountable when the time is right, of course. Every American deserves to come home. I’m happy for his family. But he needs to be held accountable.”  “

Senate Democrats Just Blocked A Bill To Increase Accountability At The Scandal-Plagued Veterans Affairs Department

Bernie Sanders

” This actually happened on the Senate floor this afternoon. Senator Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) asked for consent to take up and pass the Veterans Affairs Management Accountability Act, a bill that would make it easier/possible for the scandal-plagued department to fire employees based on poor performance. The House overwhelmingly passed the legislation on Wednesday, with a bipartisan vote of 390 to 33. (Only Democrats objected.)

Surely the Senate would follow suit, right? Not exactly. Senator Bernie Sanders, a union-backed socialist from Vermont, objected on behalf of Senate Democrats to Rubio’s request. Instead of taking any action now, Sanders said he is going to hold a hearing—several weeks from now.

Sanders, who chairs the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, has been one of the most outspoken defenders of the VA against allegations of misconduct. When asked about reports of multiple deaths related to long wait times at the VA healthcare system, Sanders told CNN: “People die every day.” “

IG: VA Investigations Expanded To 26 Facilities

Gary Varvel

” The number of VA facilities under investigation after complaints about falsified records and treatment delays has more than doubled in recent days, the Office of Inspector General at the Veterans Affairs Department said late Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the IG’s office said 26 facilities were being investigated nationwide. Acting Inspector General Richard Griffin told a Senate committee last week that at least 10 new allegations about manipulated waiting times and other problems had surfaced since reports of problems at the Phoenix VA hospital came to light last month.

The expanded investigations come as President Barack Obama’s choice to help carry out reforms at the Veterans Affairs Department was set to travel to Phoenix to meet with staff at the local VA office amid mounting pressure to overhaul the beleaguered agency.

Obama announced last week that White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Nabors would be assigned to the VA after allegations of delayed care that may have led to patient deaths and a cover-up by top administrators in Phoenix. Similar claims have been reported at VA facilities in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Georgia, Missouri, Texas, Florida and elsewhere.”

VA Scandal Expands As More Problems Surface

” As Veteran Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki prepares to testify before a Senate panel Thursday about veterans’ healthcare, revelations about months-long wait times and secret lists designed to deceive Washington about the VA’s efficiency continue to surface, according to multiple reports.

The Wall Street Journal interviewed the family of a Phoenix man who waited eight months for the Phoenix VA Health Care System to contact him to schedule an appointment. By the time 64-year-old retired Marine James Pert got the call, he was dying of melanoma.

In Fort Collins, Colo., retired Air Force serviceman Henry Leweling, who has an aneurysm, high cholesterol and a family history of heart disease, received immediate care at a VA urgent care in Cheyenne, Wyo., which then referred him for follow up treatment at the Fort Collins VA clinic. Employees there told him the wait time would be three to four months, the standard line he received anytime he requested an appointment there, according to USA Today.

” He said he was ‘obnoxious’ and called a ‘trouble maker’ but was seen the next day in Fort Collins,” according to USA Today. “Between that visit and one to his specialist in Wisconsin, he learned his aneurysm had expanded and the pain stemmed from another blocked vein.”

The Fort Collins VA faces similar allegations as in Phoenix: falsifying appointment records to make it appear as though patients were receiving timely care, within the department’s goal of 14 to 30 days. USA Today reported that the federal Office of the Medical Inspector recently released a report outlining the “scheduling problems” that led to the alleged record alterations.”

This is the future of our medical care folks . The government cannot run anything efficiently and Holder’s refusal to investigate the burgeoning VA scandal amply demonstrates the State’s vested interest in keeping the public ignorant of that fact .
